Description
2 Sheets-Sheet 2 INVENTOR E E'nrc awfirth 7 H1 ATTORNEY Patented Sept. 13, 1932 UNITED STATES PATENJT R IC GEORGE w. omen, or PH LADELP I 'rn1\TNsYLvANrA BUILDING FLASHING Application filed March 27, 1931. scan a, 525,675.
This invention relates to building flashing comprises a plate or holding member and I collapsible members attached thereto. These collapsible members may be on one or both sides of the plate, and the plate itself may be constructed of metal or waterproof material, and the collapsible members may, if
desired, be woven with the plate.
The drawings illustrate embodiments of the inventionand the views therein are as I follows: Figure 1 is a top plan view of one form of my improved flashing,
Figure 2 is a side view of the same, Figure 3 shows a section of a building construction with my improved flashing incorporated between two courses of masonry,
Figure 4 is a fragmentary longitudinal sectional view of a modified form of my flashing, Figure 5 is a fragmentary side elevation of another form of my improved flashing, and
Figure 6 is another modified formshowing the use of a waterproof plate which may be either fibrous or metal.
Referring to Figural, the plate 7 may be of metal, if desired, and provided with longitudinally extending parallel wires 8, the wires being bent into a series of elongated U-shaped sections 9, and the legs of the sections abut ting the pate 7 at 11. In the form shown in Figure 2, it is inte'ndedthat the oints ll shall be spotwelded so as to attach them; securely to the plate 7 and while I have shownthe wires 8 on both sides of the plate I do notlimit myself to this constructiomas I may only use the wires oif'one side thereof.
At't he ends of the plate7, shown in Figure 2, I have shown, in dotted lines, extensions in the form of hooks 12 for interlockinga plu-f rality of the plates 7. I j a 66 "The dimension w in Figure 2 mayvary ac-, cording to the will of the manufacturer, and the gauge of the wire 8 is intended to be such that when placed betweenltwo courses of mar sonry, as shown in Figure 3, the U-shaped 3;;
Various types of flashing on the market today are excessive in thickness and the holding members thereon will press through'the entire bodyof mortar and engage the'masom I ry courses, whereas the efficient flashing isv 7 I that which embeds itselffin the. mortar and permits of a substantially 'smalldistance be? I tween the masonry courses.
' T Figure 4 shows a platelet whichmay be of r metal or other 'material, and which has holes 16 at various intervalsthroughout the y same. There is threaded through these holes, both up and down, wires 17 which, whenthe flashingxis placed between two courses of masonry, willnot only bend to assume the 9 position'shown by'the' flashing in'Figure-3, but will be slightly assisted in this operation l by pivotingto some extent on the point 18; s .Figure, 5 shows a flashingsubstantially'the 1 same as-Figure 2, except that thejwiresraref held to the plate 7 by the rivets 1 9. i
F igureG shows a fibrous plate 21- wires :17 punched or pushed through the,
same.,This 'platefll may be ofmetal and adapted for the carrying of th e wiresi17 and for the particular utility of waterproofing.
My invention embraces the use of ordinary wide gauge wire netting, such as chicken wire which may be attached to the waterproofing plate in any desired manner, and the major portion of the wires thereof will be extended from said plate so that when placed between two courses of masonry, the Wires will embed themselves in the mortar and be collapsed as explained.
Of course, the flashing illustrated maybe modified and changed in various ways without departing from the invention herein set forth and hereafter claimed. i V
The invention is hereby claimed as follows:
same with portions of said wires spaced from said plate.
12. A building flashing comprising a plate,
wires connected at spots along their length to said plate, and having their major portions spaced from said plate, said portions being of a nature adapting them to bebent toward said plate when placed between courses of masonry.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification.
w GEORGE W. ORTH.
