00., OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK, A CORPORATION OF NEW YORK Donn 4 Application filed April 13,
My invention relates to anew and improved doll.
One of the objects of my invention is to provide a new and improved doll having a ,i stuffed body and having a neck portion made of non-fabric materia Another object ofmy invention is to provide an improved doll having a stuffed body and having a neck portion made of suitably 2.1). colored rubber on which a head is movably mounted.
Other objects of my invention will be set forth in the following description and drawing which illustrate a preferred embodiment thereof, it being understood that the above general statement of the objects of thisinvention is intended merely to generally explain the same and not to limit it in any manner.
Fig. 1 is a perspective view showing the improved doll.
Fig. 2 is a section on the line 22 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
The improved doll has a stuffed body B which is made of fabric and containing any suitable stufiing material. The doll is also provided with legs L and with arms of any suitable type. I
The neck portion 10 of the doll is made of so resilient rubber which has sufficient firmness to cause it to maintain the desired predetermined shape. That is, the neck portion 10 is bendable and resilient but it is made sufficicntly strong so that it will not collapse and it will have the permanent normal shape shown in Fig. 2. This rubber neck 10 may include any suitable coloring ingredient in order to impart the necessary flesh color or other color. a
The head 1 of the doll is made of any suitable composition so that it has arigid wall and this hollow head 1 is provided with a socket 9 in which the upper end 10 of the neck closely fits. The head 1 is provided with a transverse rod 2 which enters the loop 7 of a rod 3. The lower end of the rod 3 is provided with a loop 6 on which is mounted a washer 5 having the annular shape shown in Fig. 3 and this washer retains the lower end of a compression spring 4 through 1931; Seria1 .N0..5:2 9,58 9.
which said rod 3 passes. The upper end of they compression spring abuts the inner wall of the neck 10. The'neck-10 is provided with an opening 8 through which the rod 3 passes." 7
This construction makes it possible to turn or tilt the head of the doll in a life-like manner. Since the neck 10 is made of resilient rubber and since it fits tightly within the socket 9 of the hollow head 1, the frictional fit or grip whichis thus secured causes the head 1 to be retained more or less firmly in the position to which it is adjusted. This fit and the frictional gripsecured thereby, may be made sufiiciently tight so that the head 1 can be turned or tilted to any desired position and be held in such position.
The construction thus shown is much superior than if, the neck 10 were made of rigid material. It is impossible to secure a tight fit between a rigid neck and a rigid head. Likewise, it is necessary to paint or coat a rigid neck member in order to give it the desired color and this color flakes off when the child manipulates the head of the doll. The rubber neck described eliminates this disadvantage because the color forms part .of the vulcanized rubber composition of whichthe neck 10 is made.
The neck 10 is connected to the upper end of the body B by means of an adhesive or in any other suitable manner.
It will be noted that the neck portion 10 is of a generally tapered shape and that the upper end thereof is tapered in order to produce a firm frictional fit between the head and neck.
I have shown a preferred embodiment of my invention, but it is clear that numerous changes and omissions can be made without departing from its spirit.
I claim:
1. A doll comprising a hollow neck portion made of flesh-colored resilient rubber having a predetermined normal shape, and a rigid head provided with a socket in which the upper end of said neck portion enters and closely fits, and means including an elastic member for 'yieldably connecting said I neck portion and said head portion, so that the head portion can be adjusted with respect:
to the neck portion.
2. A doll comprising a stuffed body portion, a hollow neck portion connected to the top of said body portion and projecting above said body portion, said neck portion being made of flesh-colored resilient rubber having sufficient firmness so that said neck portion has a predetermined normal shape, a hollow head, the upper end of said neck portion being tapered and entering and litting into said hollow head, the upper end of said neck portion having an opening, a rod passing through said opening and connected at its upper end to the head, and a spring located in said hollow neck portion and adapted to downwardly urge said rod so that the head and neck portion are adjustably connected to each other.
In testimony whereof I affiX my signature.
