lhi invention r la e o mp ov me t in movable ye structure for doll h ads, a d to no el. supporting means the efor which is eapabl o Being deta hab y lo ked in op ra vs pos tion W thin the nterior o the dol head. so s to re liently dispo e the eye elemerits in operative relation to t e ye socket openings provided in the doll head. Wall This invention has for its principal eluect to rovide a simp e and i y app i d pport for movable eye elements of doll eye struetures, Which is of such construction that it may be quickly nd a y de a h ly 1nterlosked with and in operati e r lat o t a doll=head; and, furthermore, wherein the number o par s comp sing he sam ave been edu d to a min mum and at the sam tim also reduced to great simplicity of form.

Fig. 1 is a vertical longitudinal section, in part, of a doll-head equipped with the novel form of movable eye struoture accordingto this invention; Fig. 2 is a transverse seetion of the same, looking to the left in Fig. '1; Fig. 3 is a View similar to that of 1, but showing the method of inserting within and applying the eye-structure to the dolls-head Fig. 4; is an enlarged face view of h anip latab e o ing el me f e u ng h ye structure in op ative relation to and Within the doll-head; said View being taken on line 4,-4 in Fig. 3; Fig. 5 is a agm ntary ran r e s ti n, takenon line 55, in Fig. 1; Fig, 6 is an enlarged frag.-
cha acter 10 indica e a oll-head of he usual hollow construction having a bottom opening 11 in its neck-portion 12. The dollhea'd niay he made of any suitable material, sucln for example, as a molded plastic material WhiCh beCollles rigid when hardened. Formed in the doll-head are the usual eyesoolret opslllllgs, Preferably molded as an integral part'of the doll-head, within the portion there f, is a boss 13 having a countersunk seat 14, in the, opposite, side Walls of which are formed indented latch slots 15.. A180 Preferably molded as. an integral par of the doll-head, at and within the top h r of, i a boss 1 h ing a -shaped m'tchl? provid d its forwar nl- The novel Wee-structure, according to this n ntion omp ses an upright a r er p te 18, having a longitudinally adjustable footpiece 9 extending frem t ower en an fixedly eonnscted thereto by a slot and screw dju tment 7-20-21- Botat-ably m n d o a d ootpiece 9 is a a h 2 i t n-button form, the'same hav ng an axi l socket 23 of rectang a cro e ti n l shape, uitable to he engaged by a pin-Wrench whereby t e e 22 may be as uat Wh le have shown the carrier plate 18 provided with the adjustable ioet piese up n which t turn but-ton lat h is mounted, t w ll b i us that the f eet-p ste 1: may b lim nated a the lat-eh -22 earried y th lo er e f h carrier plate. The advantage of the adjustable foot-piece 19 is that, through adjustment thereof, the height of the carrier plate may be modified, whereby the location of the eye elements, supported by the latter, relative to the eye socket openings of the doll-head may be accurately determined and fitted to any variations which may occur in the formation of the doll-heads on the quantity production basis.
Suitably secured to the upper end portion of said carrier plate 18, as by retention lugs 25, is an upwardly extending and bowed spring arm 26. This spring arm is provided at its free end with an angular terminal portion 27 which is engaged in the notch 17 of the boss 16 with which the upper interior of the doll-head is provided. When thus engaged the spring arm 26 resiliently supports the upper end of the carrier plate 18 and the eye structures carried thereby, so as to yieldably relate the eye elements to the eye openings of the doll-head. As shown said spring arm 26 may be provided, if desired, with a helical loop 26 intermediate its ends, whereby its resiliency may be increased, although this is not absolutely essential.
The upper free end portion of said carrier plate 18 is of bifurcate formation to provide a pair of laterally spaced apart ears, which are bent to form rearwardly extending U shaped bearing loops 28, having their open ends forwardly presented. Mounted in the bight of said. bearing loops 28 is a cross arm 29. Secured to said cross-arm, by solder or any other suitable means of fastening, is a depending pendulum lever 30, at and to the lower end of which is secured a pendulum weight 31 of suitable form. Intermediate the cross arm 29 and the weight 31, said pendulum 30 is provided with oppositely extending transverse actuator arms 32, suitably secured thereto by solder or other mechanical fastening means.
J ournaled upon each end of said cross arm 29 is a hollow spherical sector forming an eye-lid element 33, and having integral therewith, or suitably secured thereto at one side thereof, a downwardly extending lever arm 33. Each lever arm 33 possesses a bifurcate free end portion to straddle and thus be operatively engaged by the respective actuator arms 32. To position each eye-lid element 33 in laterally adjusted fulcrumed position on the cross arm 29, and so as to laterally dispose the same in operative relation to an adjacent eye-socket opening of the doll-head, sleeves 34L are slidably engaged over and upon each end of the cross bar so as to be adjustable thereon, and so as to pass through the respective sides of the eye-lid elements 33, said sleeves having stop flanges 35 to engage the adjacent sides of the latter.
Connected with each eye-lid element 33, so
as to cooperate therewith, is an eye-ball element 36 of any suitable form or style. The eye-ball elements 36 are preferably secured to the eye-lid elements 33 so as to move there'- with, substantially for example, as disclosed in my co-pending application for United States Letters Patent, Ser. No. 594,437, filed February 23rd, 1932.
In order to supplement the resiliency of the spring arm 26, while at the same time permitting more or less independent rearward yielding of each eye device, the cross arm 29 is loosely mounted in the bearing loops 28 so as to be capable of forward and backward play therein, and so as to permit different degrees of corresponding move ments of its opposite extremities, and a supplementary spring means is carried by the carrier plate 29 to exert a mild tensional forward thrust upon the cross arm, to thus yieldably hold the eye devices operatively related to the eye socket openings with which they are respectively associated. This supplementary spring means comprises a leaf spring, preferably of ll-shape form as shown, the loop end 37 of which is anchored to the carrier plate by retention lugs 38, and the free ends of the arms 39 of which bear tensionally upon the rearward side of said cross arm 29.
In order to provide a stop to limit the eye device actuating swing of the pendulum lever 30, the lower fixed end of said spring arm 26 is angularly bent around the side of the carrier plate 18, with its free end again bent to extend across the back of the carrier plate in rearwardly off-set and spaced relation thereto so as to provide a stop-member 40 to arrestrearward or inward swinging movement of said pendulum lever 30.
To assemble the movable eye structure within and in operative relation to the doll head, the turnsbutton latch 22 is initially turned with its long axis aligned longitudinally to the carrier plate, and the pin wrench 24 is engaged in the axial opening 23 of the turn-button latch. The structure is then insert-ed within the doll-head, so that the free upper end of the spring-arm 26 is engaged in the notch 17 of the boss 16. The lower portion of the carrier plate is then thrust forwardly and into the seat 14 of the boss 13; whereupon the turn-button latch 22 is rotated to carry its ends respectively into the latch slots 15, thus interlocking the mounting structure in operative position within the dollhead, and with the eye device thereof operatively related to the eye-socket openings of said doll-head. It will thus be obvious, that by this very simple and easily effected manipulation the eye structure may be quickly and yet detachably affixed to and within the interior of the doll-head; and when so affixed, the eye devices will be also resiliently or yieldably supported relative to the eye-socket .penings so" as to readilyf adjust themselves operatively thereto. q
C When'the movable eye-structure is aflixed in place within the doll-head, in the manner eye-lid and e ye-ball elements about the cross-' arm29 as an axis, thus causing the eye-lid elements'to move downwardly across the eyesocket openings of the doll-head in closed relation thereto. s
As many changes could be made in the above-described constructions, and many apparently widely different embodiments of the invention could, be made without. departing from'the scope thereof, it is intended that all matter contained in the above. description or shown in the accompanying drawing, shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in alimiting sense. ;I claim:' i I 1.
