BED AND A SPRING norr'roml I I i Application and February 26, 1931. seriaiito. 518,454..
The present invention relates to beds and to a spring bottom and an object of the invention is to provide a spring bed bottom which may be connected to the head member and the foot member of a bed without using side rails or pieces. 'Another object of the invention is to provide a spring bottom which is so constructed that it cannot cant or twist. Still another object of the invention is to provide a frame construction which does not become twisted or distorted due to the spring tension thereon.
To these and other ends, the'invention con sists of certain parts and combinations of parts all of which will be hereinafter de scribed: the novel features being pointed out p in the appended claim.
In the drawings:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the bed showing the springs removed from the spring bottom; 7
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the foot piece of the bed;
Fig. 3 is an enlarged horizontal section showing. the manner in which the. sprlng bottom connects with the head and the foot piece;
Fig. 4 is a perspective View of the bed bottom with part of the covering broken away;
Fig. 5 is a horizontal section through the bed showing a portion of the covering of the bedbottom broken away Fig. 6 is an enlarged fragmentary longitudinal section; and
Fig. 7 is a fragmentary section on the line 7-7, Fig. 6, with part of the covering broken away.
In the illustrated embodiment of the invention, the spring bed bottom has two parallel sides each formed by a wooden board 1 with its wide sides upright and a horizontal board 2, the outer edge of which is flush with the outer face of the board 1, said board 2 projecting inwardly beyond the inner face of the board 1 so that its upper face forms a ledge on the inner side of the board 1. In other words, the planes of the two boards are at right angles to each other. The boards are secured together at their abutting port-ions by glue and/0r fastening means'fof' any type.
The ends of the frame of 'the bed bottom are formed 'b yflwoodenyboards 3, the opposite endsfotwhichf areirec'eived in grooves 4, in theboards'l'ofthejtwosides of the frame while'the lower edges "Of 'theboardSB are receivedin grooves 5'in the upper faces of the boards Q. [Tl l:e boards 3 are spaced from the" adjacent 'iends of the sides 'of the frame so that the sidcs proj'ect beyondthe ends.
Inrord'e'r to brace the ends and the corners 1 of the frameagainst'inward movemenflbra'cing means is intei posed between the e'nds andf the sides ofthe'bed bottonirfraine. In this instance. tlreibracing of each end'is effected by' a wooden brace board 6 which lS posi- I tioncd at an incline. between the inner face of the end boardj3 and the npper'sideofthe board 2 that end: of'tlie board 6 engaging the'iboar'd 3 being bevelled at 7 and fastened to the board'aby glue and/or fastening de- YICGS, and the bOardQ'haVing its upper faces notched at 8 to' receive a corner of the board 6, thecorner being glued and/or fastened to' the piece 2, and'the ends of the piece 6 being glued and/or fastened to the pieces 1'.
The springfbottoin; 'in' this' instance, is formed by a plurality of"1')arhllel inelastic straps orbandsfl rigidly secured hv fasteners 1O tothe Morena piece 2-3 of the bottomframe and ektendinji: substantially to the head end' piece 3 to which each has,'in this instance;
an indii-idual elastic connection formed by a coil 1L and a short metallicstrap 1'2 which is byv a fastener- 13 secured to the outer faceof the head end piece 3.
Vith the end in View of causing pressure on one strap to be. distributed to adjacent straps, a covering of novel construction is provided for the straps of the bed. bottom.
This covering comprises an upper layer It secured at opposite ends to theend pieces 3 and extending loosely and entirely over the straps and thcir-clastic connections but being loose over said elastic connections, and also free from the sides of the bottom member. A lower cover layer 15 extends between the footend piece 3 to the springs 11, free from I the sides of the bottom member, and is by parallel rows of stitches 16 secured to the the bed bottom over the springs 11, a stufiing 17 is arranged between the top cover and a head piece 18 has its forward edge secured to the cover by stitches 19 adjacent the ends of the stitches 16 and its rear edge secured to the head end piece 3 in a loose manner. A cover 20 may be provided for each side piece comprising a sheet of textile material preferably of the same material as the spring bottom cover 14 and 15. Each cover 20 may be a secured at 21 to the under side of each piece 2 and at 22 to the inner'face of each piece 1.
This spring bed bottom member has such strength that it may be used to connect directly with the foot and the head piece of a bed and take the place of the usual side rails. To this end, the posts 23 of the head and the foot head pieces 24 and 25 are provided on their inner faces with angle ieces 26 serving as hooks, and adjacent eac corner of the bed bottom member are provided eyes 27. The extreme endsof the side pieces 1 abut the inner faces of the posts 23 on the outer sides of the hooks 26 and the eyes are situated between the outer. face of the adjacent end piece 3 and the adjacent end of the side piece 1. The end of the side pieces 2 abut the posts below the hooks. The foot and piece and the head end piece are lower than the side 1, so thata mattress may be supported on the bed bottom between the side pieces 1 without danger of shifting sidewise.
What I claim as my inventionand desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
A spring bed bottom member comprising a frame, including end pieces, inelastic stra s rigidly secured to the foot end iece of t e frame, and elastic connections etween the head end piece and the straps situated adjacent the head end piece, and a cover having an upper layer secured to both end pieces and also having a lower layer extending from the foot end piece to a point on the inner side of the elastic connections exposing the under side of the elasticconnections, the two layers being stitched together between the straps.
