The present invention relates to an eva porator for oil vand more particularly to an evaporator for removal of the diluents of crank case oils and the like which are to be reclaimed. vSuch oils have free carbon and other impurities which tend to settle out during heating and the carbon particularly tends to cake on the heated portions of the still. To prevent such caking and consequent heating losses and to obtain circulation and movement of the oil during the heating process, the present evaporator uses a series of cartridge type heaters with spaced enclosing tubes through which the oil will circulate and thus prevent the deposit of carbon and the like. To the accomplishment of the foregoing and related ends, said invention, then, consists of the means hereinafter fully described and vparticularly pointed out in the claims. l
The annexed drawing and the following description set forth in detail certain mechanism embodying the invention, such disclosed means constituting, however, but one of various mechanical forms in which the principle of the invention may be used. The present evaporatorV provides a chamber l with a series of'cored bosses 2 extending upwardly into the chamber from the bottom and preferably spaced al ong the center line of the chamber. The walls 3 of the chamber are higher thanthe bosses and have a trough member 30 to receive any overflow due to foaming, there being a series of return apertures 31. The trough member 30 terminates in a horizontal flange l with a downturned lip 5.
The hood or condenser portion consists of a collecting member 7 having its short side 8 mounted against the underside of the flange 4 with an asbestos or insulating ypacking 9 therebetween, the low portion having an outlet 10 to a storage tank (not shown) .for the condensed products. To the long side 10 of the collecting member is attached the condensing hood l2. The sides of the evaporator chamber areV covered with a suitable insulating packing to holdthelheat, the bottomwall being extended as at-32 to provide afsup-V port for the covering.
n lThe cored bosses2 'are interiorly threaded i at the bottom as at l5 and are adapted to receive removably `mounted cartridge typeelectric heating elements 16 whichfare'hel'd in place by nipples 17 screwed into the bosses, thev connecting wires-18 passing out i thro-ugh the lnipples and beingconnecd to the usual control box. y j To obtain continuous oil circulation during the heating operation, 'eachv boss is surrounded by a Vspaced tube 20- which is supported on a series o lugs 2l formed integrally with the bosses near the bottom. VThese'tubes form cylindrical chambers around the heating bosses andV areV maintained in their-spaced relation by spaced lugs 33 formed on the l bosses and thus the oil passes up through these chambers,`keeping and maintaining a constant `circulation past .the heating elements. This circulation not only aids in the distillation of the diluents but also'substantally eliminates the deposit of carbon on the heating bosses and cylinders.
The present apparatus provides'a rapid heating and distillation of the diluentsyfrom crank caseand similar Voils and also provides '80 a distilling chamber or evaporator which can easily be cleaned. The cylinders are easily V removable and thus the bosses as well as the cylinders can be readily cleaned.` By the use of removable cartridge type heating elements, replacement of these elements may be quickly and easily accomplished without disturbing the apparatus as a who-1e. Heat control is easily obtained by varying the current through the elements. The hood and condenser construction are such as to make assembly and dismantling, if necessary, easy and inexpensive and the entire construction provides aneconomical, rapidly operating unit particularly adapted to use with dirty f l Y oils of the crank case type.
Other modes of applying the principle of the invention may be employed instead of the one explained, change being made as regards the mechanism herein disclosed, provided the means stated by any of the following claims or the equivalent of such. stated means be employed. y
