This invention relates to hydraulic acks, and has for its principal object the provision of an improved jack of this type. In the drawing accompanying this specification,

Mounted in the cylinder 11 is a ram 13 which extends upwardly through a studing box arrangement designated generally by the reference character-14, and at its upper end the ram has secured thereto a supface 21 of which is disposed at right angles to the axis thereof, and the upper face of which is tapered from the outer edges to the 'inner edges in a direction toward the face 21, to provide wedge surfaces 22. ust above 1930, Serial No. 142,117;

The washer 28 is disposed about the ram 13,
and at its inner edges provides a bearing surface 29 for the ram 13.
Above the bearing surface 29 the inner edge of the washer 28 is tapered as indicated at 30, thereby forming a space between the adjacent surface of the portion 30 and the adjacent surface of the ram 13. In, its upper face the .washer 28 is provided with transversely extending grooves extending from the outer "edge of the washer 28 to its inner edges, while above thewasher 28 is a second washer 32, threaded downwardly-in the bore 17 so as to .bear tightly against the upper faceof the washer 28, and cooperating'with the'washer 28 to form the groovesin the washer 28, into ducts 31 extending through the packing jmeans, one of theducts or grooves 31 communicating with the reservoir 10 through the port 33 in the upper end of the enlarged crushed downwardly by an adjusting nut 35 threaded into the counter-bore 17 and having a tapered face 36 for engaging and properly compressing the packing 34E. r
The lower end of the ram 13 is provided with a socket 37 andwith a transverse duct 38 extending from the socket entirely through the outer face of the ram, while the outer surface of the ram at its lower end is provided with an annular groovev accommodating al' .portion 16. Above. the washer 32 there is provided a packing material 34," which'is' spring ring 39 adapted to engage the undersurface 21 of the ring at its upper limit of c movement.
into contact with the under surface 21 of the ring 20; this ring being rather loosely mounted will be somewhat elevated and the .wedge surfaces 22 thereof acting upon the wedge surfaces 25 of the packing member 23, will wedge the portion 24 of the packingmember tightly against the ram surfaces, operating to prevent leakage of liquid past theadj acent surfaces of the portion 24 of the packing member and the surfaces of the ram with 'which they are engaged. Any liquidpassing upon the outside of the packing member 23 will also tend to press the portion 24 tightly against the ram, and leakage of liquid past the flange 26 of the packing member 23 isat least substantially prevented due to the tight clamping of the flange 26 between the shoulder '27 and the washer 28. Any liquid escaping past the packing member 23 will accumulate in the chamber provided by the tapered surfaces 30 of the washer 28, and will escape to the reservoir through the duct 31 communicating with the port-33 returning to the reservoir. lVhen the ram 13 reaches its uppermost position any additional liquid admitted to the cylinder 11 will pass through the socket 37 and the duct 38, and will be 31 and port 33, thereby preventing injurious pressure being applied to the ram.
From the above description it will be obvious to those skilled in the art that the invention provides a new and improved hy-' draulic jack. At the same time those skilled in the'art will appreciate that the embodithose specifically pointed out or suggested herein, and also that this particular embodiment of my invention herein described may be variously changed and modified, without departing fromthe spirit of my invention, or
"sacrificing the advantages thereof, wherefore it will be understood that the disclosure herein is illustrative only, and that my invention is not limited thereto.
' I claim:
" v 1. A hydraulic jack, comprising: a reservoir; a ram cylmder having an internally screw threaded recess in the upper portion thereof forming a first shoulder, said ram cylinder also having an outlet passage for establishing communication between said reservoir and said recess, and having a second shoulder disposed therein below said first shoulder; a ram-disposed within said ram cylinder and having a radially extending passage formed inythe lower portion thereof communicating with the ram cylinder beneath said ram; an annular member surrounding said ram in spaced relation therewith in seating engagement with said second shoulderand having an inwardly and downwardly inclined upper surface; a first packing member surrounding said ram and havingianannulanfiange disposed in seat- 7 ing engagement with said first shoulder and with .an inwardly and'downwardly inclined lower surface for operative enga'gement'with the correspondingly inclined upper surface of said annular member; a first washer sur rounding said ram in threaded engagement with the threads of said recess for maintains ing said packing member insealing engagement with'saidv ram, said washer having'a beveled inner circumference and radially extending grooves in the upper face thereof; and a second washer surroundingsaid' ram in screw threaded engagement with the threads of said recess for engagement with said first washer to close the beveledportion thereof and said grooves, and forming'therewith an inner annular passage intersected by radially extending passages, the passage inthe lower portion of said ram being adapted to communicate with said 7 annular passage and with said radial passages when said ram reaches its upper limit of travel to permit the escape of fluid from said ram cylinder to said reservoir through said outlet passageQ returned to the reservoir 10 through the duct thereof forming a first shoulder, said ram cylinder also having an outlet passage for c establishing communication between said reservoir and sald recess, and having a second shoulder disposed therein :below said first "shoulder; a ram disposed within said ram' cylinder and I having a radially extending passage formed in the lower portionthereof communicating with the ram cylinder be-" neath said ram; anannular member surroundlng said ram in spaced relation therewith 1n seating engagement wlth said second shoulder and having an inwardly and downwardly inclined upper surface; a first packing member surrounding said ram and hav- 7 ing an annular flange disposed in seating engagement with said first shoulder, and with an inwardly and downwardly inclined lower surface for operative engagement with thecorrespondingly inclinedupper surface of said annular member; a'first washer surrounding said ram in threaded engagement with the threads of said recess for maintaining said packing member in sealingengage ment with said ram, said washer having a beveled inner circumference and radially extending grooves in the upper face thereof; a second washer surrounding said ram in screw threaded engagement with the threads of said recess for engagement with said first washer to close the beveled portion thereof and said grooves, and forming therewith an inner annular passage intersected by radially extending passages communicating with said outlet passages; a second packing member surrounding said ram; and a member signature.
