Description

Sept. 6, 1932. A. c. HOPKINS DOUBLE ENDED CLOTHESPIN Filed March 26, 1952 www yan
Patented Sept. 6, 1932 UNITED STATES ADELBERT C. HOPKINS, OF SPOKANE, WASHINGTON DOUBLE ENDED CLOTHESPIN lAjgiplieation nled March 26, 1982.
My invention relates to double ended clothes pins and certain objects of the invention are to provide a clothes pin comprising a pair of juxtaposed jaws resiliently held together by a spring clamping member comprising a pair of spiral spring portions with a connecting bar portion centrally secured to one of said jaws and a pair of arms extending respectively in opposite directions from w the spiral springs and having rlght angular finger end portions connected to the end portions of the other jaw whereby the two jaws are prevented from torsional or other displacement.
With the above and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists of the novel arrangement and combination of parts -herein' after described and claimed. These objects are accomplished by the device illustrated in the accompanying drawing; wherein: Figure 1 is a view in perspective of the complete clothes pin; Fig. 2 is a view in perspective of the spring clamp installed on the wooden jaws which are shown in dotted lines; and Fig. 3 is a detail view in perspective of one of the jaws.
Referring to the drawing throughout which like reference numerals indicate like parts, the numerals 5 and 6 respectively designate the two wooden jaws of the pin. The jaw 5 has a groove 7 disposed centrally and transversely across its outer face, while the jaw 6 has a pair of corresponding grooves 8 and 9 disposed at equal distances from its ends and across its outer face. Both of said jaws have convex opposing inner end face portions as at 10.
The securing means for the jaws 5 and 6 comprises a spring wire having a cross bar portion 11 equal to the length of the groove 7 and fitting snugly into said groove. At the ends of said cross bar portion the wire is doubly curved upon itself to form a pair of spiral portions 12 and 13 which t snugly against both of the opposite sides ofthe two jaws when they are disposed in juxtaposition as shown in Fig. 1.
From the spiral portion 12 the wire extends longitudinally along one side of the jaw 6 Serial No. 601,335.
and substantially parallel with the corner edge thereof to form an arm portion 14. Said arm is deflected substantially at right angles to form a finger portion 15 which lits into the transverse groove 8 and has a bent end. 16
which fits around the opposite corner edge of said jaw.
From the spiral portion 13 the wire extends in an opposite direction to that of the arm 14 and along the opposite side of the jaw 6 to form an arm portion 17 which is delected at right angles to form a finger pori tion 18 which fits snugly into the transverse groove 9 andhas a bent end 19 which l'its around the corner edge of said jaw as clearly shown in the drawing.
The lingers 15 and 18 respectively fit into the grooves 8 and 9 flush with the outer face of the jaw 6, and the cross bar portion 11 ts into the groove 7 Hush with the outer face of the jaw 5 thus making a neat finish and preventing the jaws from slipping on each other. The spiral portions 12 and 13 together with the arms 14 and 17 and the ends 16 and 19 of the finger portions t snugly against the opposite sides of the jaws thus preventing any lateral or torsional displacement of said jaws and retaining them securely in juxtaposed relation. The spiral portions provide efficient spring means for the device as a Whole.
Having thus described my invention, it being understood that minor changes may be resorted to in its form and arrangement without departing from the scope and spirit of the invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States A double ended clothes pin comprising a pair of jaws disposed in juxtaposition and having opposed inner convex end face portions, one of said jaws having a groove centrally disposed across its outer face, the other jaw having a groove disposed across its outer face at each of its end portions, a spring wire clamping member comprising a cross bar portion fitting into the central groove of the one jaw, said bar having a spiral portion formed at each end thereof and ittino' snugly against both of the opposite sides oiD the juxtaposed jaws, arm portions extending respectively from each of said spiral portions in opposite directions and snugly against the opposite y sides of the other jaw, each of saidarms deected at right angles to form fingers respectively fitting into the grooves at the end portions of said other jaw, and .the ends of said ngers bent atright angles to t around the corner edges of said jaw.47V
In testimony whereof I aiix my signature.
ADELBERT o. HOPKINS.
