' M'OERZS P. HGLMES, F CLAREMONT, NEW HAMPSHIRE, ASSIGNOR T0 SULLIVAN MA- CHINERY COIEPANY, A CORPORATION OF, MASSACHUSETTS MINING MACHINE Application filed. December 30,1929. Serial No. 417,329.
This invention relates to improvements in mining machines-and more particularly has reference to improved flexible feeding means for a coal mining machine of the continuous cutter, bottom cutting type.
An object of this invention is to provide an improved coal mining machine. Another object is to provide an improved coal mining machine of the flexibly fed, bottom cutting type. A further object is to provide an improved feeding mechanism for a coal mining machine. Another object of this invention is to provide an improved coal mining machine of the flexibly fed, continuous cutter, bottom cutting type having improved feeding and guiding mechanism and more particularly improved feeding and guiding mechanism for a room and pillar type coal mining machine. Yet another object is to provide an improved bottom cutting mining imachine'of the room'and pillar type having improved feeding and guiding mechanism wherein separate relatively rotatable feed operating and controlling members cooperating with separate flexible feeding elements are employed for feeding and guiding the machine. Another object is to provide in a flexible feeding means of the aforesaidcharactor, improved driving and controlling means for the feed operating members whereby the latter may be separately or simultan ously driven in a direction ,to draw in their respective flexible feeding elements at relatively low speed or at relatively high speed. A further object is to provide in such a feeding means, improved mechanism whereby the feed operating members may rotate in a direct-ion to pay out their respective flexible feeding elements under various degrees of operator-controlled frictional resistance or without .such resistance, as conditions may require. Still another object is to provide in such a feeding means improved mechanism s iincludina a frictionally controlled fastspeed gear train and a frictionally cont-rolled slow speed gear train, and means for connecting either of said members to either train where by said members may be rotated independentlv in Winding direction at either a relatively high speed or a relatively low speed,
the said gear trains being common to the drive of both members. These and other objects and advantages of'this invention will, however subsequently more fully appear.
.In the accompanying drawings there is shown for purposes of illustration, one em bodiment which the invention may assume in practice.
In these drawings,

Fig.6 is a detailed view, parts being shown in section, illustrating the controlling mechshown a coal mining machine of the flexibly fed; room and pillar,-bottom cutting type,
althoughit is within the scope ofthis inven' tion to apply the various novel features of the invention in coal mining machines of various other types. This mining machine generally comprises a low compact machine frame 1 of generally rectangular shape having a plane bottom surface 2 upon which the machine is slidably supported for movement over the mine bottom. As is usual in mining machines of the room and pillar type. rigidly secured within the machine frame and projecting forwardly lengthwise therefrom is an elongated plane cutter bar 3 supporting on its outer edges an endless cutter chain 4 having usual staggered cutter bits 5. Arranged at opposite sides of the machine frame'at the rear end of the machine are relatively ro-- bers 6 and 7 herein in the form of cable winding drums, with which feeding and controlling cables 8 and 9 respectively cooperate.
'Carried by the machine frame is a motor 10 which may be of the same general character.
as that disclosed in my copending applica tion Ser. No. 179,357, filed March 29, 1927, patented July 21, 1931, Patent No. 1,815,873. The feed operating and controlling members 6 and 7 are operatively connected to the rear end of the motor shaft through improved transmission means to be hereinafter described. Arranged at the opposite rear corners of the machine framecn upstanding axesare guide sheaves 12, 13, 14 and 15,.the guide sheaves 14 and 15 being horizontally swingable into difierent positions, while arranged at the opposite sides of the front end of the machine frame are vertically swingable swing arms supporting guide sheaves 16 and 17. The feed-and controlling cables 8 and 9 after passing around any preferred guide sheaves may be extended in any preferred direction from the machine and attached to suitably positioned anchors in the manner which is well understood in the mining machine art.
Now referring to the improved feeding mechanism, and more particularly to the improved transmission means, it will be noted that secured to the rear end of the motor shaft 11 as shown in Fig, 4 is a spur pinion 18 meshing with an internal gear 19 secured to a horizontal longitudinally extending shaft20 suitably journaled within the machine frame and having fixed thereto a bevel pinion 21 meshing with bevel gear 22 secured to a vertical shaft 23. This shaft is suitably journaled within the machine frame ner discs of these clutches are carried by hollowshafts or sleeves 3l and 32 respectively, rotatably supported on the shaft 26 at opposite sides of the worm wheel 25. Carried by the sleeve 3l is a spur pinion 33 meshing with a spur gear 34 fixed to a transverse horizontal shaft 35 arranged parallel wit in front of the shaft 26 and likewise suitably ournaled within the machine frame; Fixer to the shaft 35 is a spur pinion 36 meshing with an internal gear 37 carried by then-ind n and I ing drum 7 In the same manner the sleeve 32 carries a spur pinion 38 meshing with a spur gear 39 fixed to a transverse horizontal shaft 40, alined with the shaft 35 above referred to, and arranged at the opposite side of the machine. Secured to the shaft 40 is a spur pinion 41 meshing with an internal gear 42 carried by the winding drum 6. It will thus be seen that upon application of the friction clutch .29 the winding drum 7 may be driven from the motor in winding direction at a relatively high speed through the gearing 18, 19, 21, 22, vertical shaft 23, worm gearing 24, 25, shaft 31, spur gearing 33, 34,
shaft'35 and spur pinion 36 meshing with internal gear 37 carried by the drum. It will also be noted that when friction clutch 30 applied, the winding drum 6 may be driven from the motor in winding direction at a similar speed through a similar gear train, the gear train including gearing 18,19, 21, 22, 23, 24, 25, being common to the drive of both the winding drums to effect rotation thereof throughtheir respective reduction gearings either separately or simultaneously in. winding direction at a relatively high speed. The operating means for the friction cl itches 29, 30. will be hereinafter described.
The transmission means for effecting rotation of the winding drums in winding direction at relatively low speed includes a spur gear 43 (see Fig. 4) formed integral with the bevel gear 22 and likewise secured to the vertical shaft 23 and driving through idler gears 44 and 45, ournaled on upstanding studs 46 carried by the bottom of themachine frame, a spur gear 47. As shown in Fig. 5, the spur gear 47 is fixed to the lower end of a vertical shaft 48 suitably journaled within the machine frame and having fixed thereto intermediate its ends, a worm 49 meshing with a slow speed worm wheel 50. The hub of this worm wheel, as shown in Fig. 3, is fixed to the transverse shaft 26 and is connectible by a multiple disc clutch 51 to the sleeve 32. In the illustrative construction shown, secured to the opposite end of the shaft 26 is a clutch housing 52 carrying the outer discs of a multiple disc clutch 53,. the inner discs of this clutch being carried by the sleeve 31. It will thus be seen that when the clutch 29 is released andthe clutch 53applied, the winding drum 7 may be driven from the motor in winding direction at relatively low speed through gearing 18, 19, 21, 22, 43, 44, 45, 47, worm gearing 49, 50, trans-- verse shaft 26, sleeve 31, spur gearing 33,34, and the spur pinion 36 meshing with the in ternal gear 37 carried by the winding drum 7. It will also be noted that when the friction clutch 30 is released and the clutch 51 applied, the winding drum 6 maybe driven from the motor at a similar speed in a similar direction through gearing 18, 19, 21, 22, 43, 44, 45, 47, worm gearing 49, 50, sleeve 32, spur gearing 38, 39 and spur pinion 41 meshing with the internal gear 42 carried by the Winding drum 6. It will be noted that the slow speed gear train 18, 19, 21, 22, 43, 44, 45, 47, '48 and $50 is common to the drive of both the winding drums. It will also be seen that the friction clutches may be suficiently released to per mit the cable to unwind from the drums under various degrees of frictional resistance under the control of the clutch operating mechanism. Upon release of the friction clutches the drums may be entirely relieved from any frictional resistance due to the action of the friction clutches. The operating mechanism for the clutches 51 and 53 will be later described. It will be observed that the winding drums 6 and 7 are arrangedon horizontal axes extendingtransversely of and at opposite sides of the machine and each drum is journaled on a laterally projecting stub shaft 54 formed integrai'with a plate 55 detachably secured to the side wall of the machine frame. Each drum has formed centrally therein a dust proof chamber 56 in which the bearing structure is housed.
The operating mechanism for the sets of friction clutches 29, 53, and 30, 51 will now be described. Inter-posed between the clutches 29, 53 and straddling the shaft 31 is a shipper yoke 57 pivoted at 58 on the machine frame. This shipper yoke is provided at opposite sides thereof with curved portions 59 engaging the pressure plates for the clutches respectively. Engaging the pressure plates for the friction clutches 30 and 51is a similar shipper yoke 60 pivoted at 61 on the machine frame. The shipper yokes have integral projecting lever portions or arms 62 (see'Fig. 7 bifurcated at theirouter ends-for connection to trunnions 63 and 64 respectively. Each of the trunnions is in the form of a nut threadedly connected-to screws 65 and 66 re spectively. The screw 65 is formed on a rotatable sleeve 67 rotat'ably supported within .theside of the machine frame and carrying at its outer end a toothed clutch member 68. A similar rotatable sleeve 69 is secured to the screw 66 and is likewise journaled within the A" machine frame and carries a similar toothed clutch member 70. Extending axially through these sleeves is an operating rod 71 having keyed to its opposite ends toothed clutch members in the form of hand wheels 72, 73. A suitable plunger and groove connection 74 is employed for holding the rod 71 in its adjusted positions. It will thus be seen that when the hand wheel 72 is slid inwardly to connect the clutch teeth thereon with the clutch teeth on the member '68 and the hand wheel is rotated, the screw 67 is retated and as a result the shipper yoke is swung about its pivot to apply one or the other of the friction clutches 29 and 53. When the rod 71 is slid in the opposite direction connecting the clutch teeth on the member 73 with the clutch teeth on the member and the rod is It will therefore be evident that the clutches of each set may be only alternatively applied and that the clutches may be controlled by the hand wheels 72, 7 3 from either side of the machine. v
The mining machine is adapted to be mounted on a self-propelled truck .during transport of the machine about the mine and mechanism is provided on the machine for driving the truck wheels. This truck driving mechanism includes a spur gear 7 5 meshing, as shownv in Fig.4, with the spur gear 44 of the slow speed gear train of the feeding mechanism. This spur gear 75 is fixed to a verticalshaft 76 suitably journaled within the machine frame and secured to the upper end of this shaft is a spur gear 77 projecting through an opening in the frame and adapted to mesh With a usual driving gear (not shown) carried on the truck. When the machine is mounted on the truck with the gear 77 in mesh with the truck driving gear, the truck wheels may be driven from the motor through the gearing 18, 19, 21, 22, 43, 44, 75, vertical shaft 76 and spur gear 77.
