Description

standard having a non-circular inner bore,
and having a rotatable driving member, a threaded sleeve projectable by said driving member, a coil of spring wire embracing the lower end of said sleeve, said coil having portions engaging with a non-circular portion of the bore to prevent normal rotation of the sleeve in the bore, said coil forming a yielding connection between the sleeve and the standard whereby to permit the sleeve to rotate with the driving member.
18. In a double screwlifting jack, in com- 7 bination, a standard provided with a longitudinal opening and provided with a longitudinal guideway, an interiorly threaded nut mounted in the upper portion of said standard, means for rotating said nut, a tubular sleeve mounted in said standard and provided with an exterior thread and at its upper end with an interior thread, the lower portion of said tubular sleeve having a relatively smooth portion, a coiled spring frictionally gripping the smooth portion, a free end of said coiled spring engaging said guideway, the bottom of the tubular sleeve having means preventing the inadvertent detachment of the coiled spring, and a second screw threaded member having exterior threads engaging the interior threads of the tubular sleeve.

One embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the' accompanying drawings, and the invention resides in certain novel features which will behereinafter first fully described and then" more particularly defined in the appended claims.
In the drawings: 4 I i Figure 1 is alongitudinal section through a clutch embodying the invention, Fig. 2 is a view, partlyi in'trans-verse section and partly in side elevation, the broken line 1-1 in this figure indicating the plane .of the section shown in Fig. 1, v

Referring tothedrawings more particu-' larly by referencenumerals, the numerall denotes a portion'of the casingsurrounding the clutch which casing maybe of any convenient or approved form iand isfeq'uippe'd 3 with a detachable cover an one end. The
drivingshaft is indicated at. 3 and to the end i of said shaft is secured adrumor pulley 4 having an overhanging rim 5. A socket or hearing opening, indicated at 6, is formed at i the center of the drumand in the end of the driving shaft to receive the reducedend '7 of the driven shaft 8,. bearingrollers 9 being disposed around the reduced end i of the driven shaft so asfto reduce the frictional wear. The .hub 11 forms the center of a disk 12 which has its periphery disposed close to the inner circumference of the rim 5 andwhich is constructed atintervals withpopenings or radial slots. 13 andoperipheral notches 14. The shoes 15 are disposed about the periphery 'of thedisk 12and are formed between but at edges, as shown at 17, whereby they may have a sllght rocking-w movement L withinj the notches, the-innenends of the lugs. being plane, as will beunderstood upon reference toFigs. 2 and? 3 Adjacent their; endsthe shoes are provided with pairs ofinwardly extending radial lugs 18,the members of each a pan extending on opposite sidesof thedisk 12, as clearly shown inFig. l, and engaged through the openings 13 and the inner ends of these lugs are the terminals 19 of-torsion .springs 20 which have their intermediate portions coiled around stud-bolts 21:m0un'ted in the :disk between the cooperating pairs of lugs, asshown in Figs. '2 and 5, washers 22 and 23 being provided upon the bolts at the sides of the coils, as shown inFig. 5, so as to retain the coils inproper position upon the bolts and obtain the proper purchase for the head of the bolt to properly anchor the springs on the side of the disk presented to the drum. The terminals 19 of these springs V pass through the slots 13 in the disk and are thereby permitted to play radially to a sufficient degree to accommodate the necessary movement ofthe shoes in opening or closing the clutch. a t
