This invention relates toV an article ofmanufacture designed for use by hunters, campers and others, for the purpose of starting a fire, or igniting inflammable materials, and
which may be used advantageously in windy and rainy or wet weather.
rlhe invention has for'its general obj ect the provision of an article of the indicated character which may be carried about by hunters,
campers and others without liability of its being rendered uselessby moisture or dampness, which may be carried with safety, which may be used in a convenient manner to kindle or start arfire, and which will be effectual in g5 Weather in which ordinary matches or theV like could not be used successfully.
With the foregoing, and other objects in view, the invention resides in thesparticular combinations, and in the novel construction,
arrangement, and adaptation of the parts, hereinafter fully described and illustrated ink the accompanying drawing, in which:

In accordance with the invention use is made of an outer tubular container 10 which is waterproof, and which can be cheaply produced from wrapped paper or rolled cardboard, or equivalent material, having a coating of paraffin, or .paraffin and other substances of a waterproofing character. Suitable inflammable material is arranged Within the container, and is in the form of a tube closely fitting within the container. This in- 40 flammable tube 11 may consist of a tubular Wick or be made of other equivalent material saturated with pitch, resin or other inflammable substance, so as to burn with a flame for a comparatively long time. A suitable number of ordinary matches 12 are inserted in the but 1930. Serial No. 443,804.

A suitable packing or wadding of cotton or the like 13 is plugged in each end of the container 10, and each endthereof is sealedV by sealing wax 14:' to exclude moisture. The seal 14 in one end is of a color different from that in the opposite end of the container, so as to distinguish one end of the container from the other end, whereby a person may know at a glance at which end of the container the heads of the matches occur.
To use `thearticle, the indicated match head end of theV container 10, together with the seal 14 and wadding 13 at that end, is cut oif with a jack knife, and a container is also split lengthwise in order to allow entry of air to make combustion possible, as shown in Figure 2. The-heads of the matches 12 maythen be ignited by striking them with a knife blade container of paper or cardboard, an inliammable tube within saidcontainer, matches arranged Within said tube with the pyrophorous heads thereof adjacent one end of said tube for igniting the tube, and means sealing each end of the container.
