Description
Aug. 23, 1932. P. zucco METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR FORMING P-ILES Filed Aug. 29, 19.30
Patented Aug.Y 23, 1932 PIERRE Zucco, or sait FRANcIsco, CALIFORNIA` Application med August 29, V,1930.l seria.; No. 478,746. l
This'inventionrelates to -improvements inv Y the formation of piles and morefparticularly Y to-'the ltype which are screwdriven, as ex- Aernplitled inV` V` the patent'fto v -Grimaud,
#1,563,024, issued November 24, 1925.
The Grimaud patent,'although proving an improvementinv the Aart, is open to objections which-my invention is designed yto overcome. When it isattemptedV to sinkV the Grimaud pile, the rotary'movementof. the pile itself causes a 'torsional' stress which serves to injure theiinterior of thepile and-where the same is used in long lengths in hard ground, the pile is not at all satisfactory. VFor this reason the 'lengthfofthe pile `is'necessarily limited'and is only suitable to be used under the most favorable circumstances. v
The prime objectof my invention is to produce a pile which may be sunk by means of a rotary movement imparted to the point or lower end of the pile without subjecting the same to eXtreme torsion. Another Objectis to provide a construction wherein the casing may be readily removed or lifted without disn turbing the screw point. By having the casing secured to the screw point or head by v quick detachable means, the same may be removed or lifted and at the same time during the boring process, the main stress will be directed to the head and any torsion that may result from the boring movement will not injure the pile, since that is formed after the boring movement is completed and is made possible due to the ability to remove' the casa modified form of construction.
Figure 4: is a section taken on line lr-L1V of Figure 1.
Figure 5 is a side elevation of a locking device, and
Figure 6 is a section taken on line 6 6v of Figure 5.
Referring to `thedrawing in `which like numerals indicate similar parts, numeral 7 designates a Vscrew head which maybesolid with lapertures 8 extending therefrom, as
shown in Figure 1, they apertures Sbeing' preferably formed in the helically shaped threads 9; thel apertures 8 connecting]with conduits 10, leading to Va central opening 11'; or the' screw heads may be hollow, depending upon the nature of the work.
grout or liquid cement may bepou-red'into the hollow screw head1 7 sothatjthe same willeX-ude through the/apertures 8 to form va' solid base 9 around the screw head 7. This A1,3 of corresponding shape, said socketl be-V ing `screw threaded at 14 to the inner wall 15-ofthe casing 16. This socketl may be cast or otherwise formed as a partof the casing .16 but so as tohave thevarious scc# tions making up the casing 16 of uniformcon#` l Where rthe yscrew heads `are solid, as shown in Figure l,
struction, it is desirable to' merelyhave the socket 1,3 screwthreade'd to thecasing 16. y'
Figurelis also shown with an outer casing o'r tube 17 Where the soil'is vvery crum-4 bly and soft,''it may bedesirable to have the outercasing 17 which is not secured to'y the screw headi'? and does notrotate, but due tothe -factthat the screw head 7 is larger in diameterthan its upper portion, this vca'sing 17 may be insertedas the screw head 7 is screwed int-'o the ground. A. plate '18 corresponding to a washer is placed vfreely around theinner casing 16 so'that the bottom edge 19 of the outer casing 17 would contact therewith and prevent any undue friction asthe screw head 7 is rotated. It is obvious that other uick detachable means than the` one illustrated can be utilized and still be within the scope of this invention.l v y VAs actually used, the casing 16 will have fittedto. its `lower end the socket 13 and the socket in turn willbe fitted over the key 12. The pointy of the screw head 7 will be Adirected to the support in whichl thepile is desired to be sunl and the same Will'be rotated either by raised, the pile is formed. Where the outer manual means or mechanical means through the turning of thecasing 16 which in turnwill rotate the screw head 7. As the casing is lowered, additional sections may be added on by means of couplings 18 in the usual manner. If the sides of theveXcavation have a tendency to crumble, the outer casing 17.will' be lowered and'built Vup as thev work pro. grosses. Upon the desired ,depthy `being p reached, the casing -16-will be disconnected and` graduallyV raised asthematerial to institute the'pile is fedin through the lcasing 16. The screw heady? Vis left the ground to form an anchor and as the Ycasing 16 is casing 17 is used, this will formi the outer wallrofthe pile and will become integrally connected to the screw head by means of the cement orother material. It is obvious that reinforcing material such as iron rods or wire may be utilized in theconstruction of such pile. The raising of the inner casing 16 will continueuntil the entire pile has been. formed. Y
`In themodified form of construction,`as
shownin Figure 3,it may be desirous of pre-A casting or preforming sections of the pile and ln-such a casing, the screw head 7 lsmade with an additional length in the formof aV shank 19.V A key 12 is' formed at the base of the shank 19 similar to the key shown in Figures 1 and 2'and a socket 13 is formed iny the casing 16`in the same manner as in the Figures- 1 and 2. Y thecasinglf is lowered,`
i additional preformed sections of the pile will in this construction.
v quick-,detachable means 21 is utilized to con-- what i neet the sections 22 ofcasing 16.
