' RUG I Filed April 1, 1931 2 SheetsSheet 2 Inventor Jaw/1 2? JZM/w/ A llomey Patented Aug. 23, 1932 PATENT OFFICE JOHN FRANKLIN JEWELL, OF LACONIA, NEW HAMPSHIRE RUG Application filed April 1, 1931. Serial No. 526,952.
This invention relates to rugs and has for some of its objects to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a rug which will be highly attractive in appearance, strong, durable, and which may be manufactured at low an enlarged scale showing the warp and weft tightly and loosely woven.
Figure 4 is a cross sectional view taken through the weft or filling on a greatly enlarged scale and showing said weft and a warp strand loosely woven.
Figure 5 is a sectional view on an enlarged scale through the warp showing the weave of the rug.
Figure 6 is a fragmentary view in perspective of one of the weft or filling strands or tubes.
Referring to the drawings in detail, it will be seen that the body portion of the rug is indicated generally by the reference numeral 1 and is woven of the warp strands 2 and the tubular weft or filling strands 3. The tubular weft or filling strands 3 are knitted from yarn on a conventionalknitting machine.
The rug is woven on a two-harness hand loom. In practice, twelve warp strands or threads to the inch have been found quite satisfactory. After each weft or filling strand of tubular form is inserted, the harness lever of the loom is actuated for tightening the warp on each tubular weft after the insertion thereof and in this manner a very close weave is had which compresses the tubular weft or filling strands in a manner to define substantially a multiplicity of diamonds as seen in Figure 2 of the drawings. This constitutes an important and highly desirable feature of the invention.
Borders 4 are provided on the ends of the rug and, if desired, said borders may extend entirely around the rug. Fringe 5 is also provided on the ends of the rug to enhance the attractiveness thereof. The tubular weft or filling strands 3 may be colored in various combinations as desired. The construction of the rug is such that the same is reversible, another desirable feature.
It is believed that the many advantages of a rug constructed in accordance with this invention will be readily understood, and al though the preferred embodiment of the invention is illustrated and described, it is to be understood that changes in the details of construction may be had which will fall within the scope of the invention as claimed.
What is claimed is A rug comprising interwoven warp and weft strands, said weft strands being tubular and of knit, flexible material, the weft strands being compressed at the points where they cross the warp strands and substantially uncompressed at points intermediate the warp strands and defining a multiplicity of abutting, substantially diamond shaped areas.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
JOHN FRANKLIN J EWELL.
