CORPORATION OF INDIANA CULTIVATOR SWEEP Application filed January 2, 1932. Serial No. 584,324.
In a very large percentage of cultivators, of the shovel type, at the present time on the market in this country, each shovel is carried upon, and generally vertically adjustable upon, a depending arm or bracket pair of flaring inclined cutter blades and main body, which may be readily attached to any one of a considerable number of cultivators the products of a large number of manufacturers, whereby the sweep blades may be readily positioned to the rear of the usual cultivator shovel.
The accompanying drawing illustrates our invention.
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of an embodiment of the invention in position in conjunction with a common type of cultivator shovel and the bracket or spindle which normally supports the same;
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the same embodiment of the invention;
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary axial section of the parts shown in Fig. 1,
Fig. 4 is a rear elevation, and
Fig. 5 is a fragmentary section of a modification.
In the drawing 10 indicates a common type of shovel-supporting bracket the lower end 11 of which is a tubular shank, the usual shovel 12 being attached thereto by a clamp bracket 13.
The sweep which forms the subject matter of the present application comprises a main body, conveniently a casting, having a base plate 15 from which arises an inclined finger 16, conveniently cylindrical and of a diameter slightly less than the interior of the shank 11. Surrounding therear portion of finger 16 is a segmental rearwardly inclined wall 17 having at each side outwardly flaring flanges 18, 18, which flanges are inclined rearwardly and upwardly relative to finger 16. At the lower end of the rear face of each of these flanges is a flange 19 which, with the adjacent rear face of the wall 17 forms a pocket for the reception of the lower tip 20 of a sweep blade 20 securely held upon its flange 18 by a single fastening bolt 21, which conveniently passes through flange and blade and enters a nut on the back side of the blade. 7
Threaded through the middle of wall 17 in radial opposition to finger 16 is a clamping bolt 23.
The improved sweep is readily attachable to the hollow shanks 11 of existing cultivators by inserting the finger 16 into the lower end of the hollow shank 11 and clamping the structure in place by forcing bolt 23 against the outer face of the shank near its lower end.
Referring now to Fig. 5. The finger 16 is one arm of the U-shaped element 30 through the other arm of which the clamping screw 23 is threaded. The sweep blades, in this form, are carried by an intermediate block 31 and the two arms of the U are spaced apart enough to permit the insertion of body 81 and the wall of shank 11 therebetween, the sweepcarrying body being thereby forced against the outer face of shank 11 and the inserted finger 16 being drawn against the interior of shank 11. This form is probably not as convenient or efficient as the form of the in vention shown in Figs. 1 to 4: inclusive.
It will be readily understood that the manner of fastening the sweep blades to the main body may be modified through a wide range without departing from the spirit of the disclosed invention, the fundamental characteristics of which are a blade-carrying body, a finger adapted to be inserted into the lower end of the shovel-carrying shank, and clamping means by which the blade-carrying body may be firmly secured to the shovel-carrying shank through the medium of said finger.
We claim as our invention:
1. A sweep attachment for cultivators comprising a blade-carrying main body, a finger carried by the main body and formed for upward insertion in the tubular shank of the 2. The combination, with a tubular shovelcarrying shank of a cultivator, of a bladecarrying body having a finger adapted to be upwardly inserted in said shank, and a clamping screw arranged in transverse opposition to said finger to clamp said finger against the interior of the shank to hold the bladecarrying body in position upon the shank.
3. A sweep attachment for tubular shovel carryingshanks of cultivators comprising, a bladecarrying portion, a finger formed therewith for upward insertion into such tubular shank, and a clamping screw arranged in transverse opposition to said finger to force said finger laterally tightly against the interior of such shank and retain the blade-carrying element externally of said shank.
In witness whereof, we have hereunto set our hands at Indianapolis, Indiana, this 29th no day of December, A. D. one thousand nine hundred and thirty-one.
