This invention relates to air pumps and more particularly to air pumping devices adapted for use as accessories of wheeled vehicles having pneumatic tires requiring occasional inflation.
One of the objects of this invention is to provide an efiicient device that can be easily and quickly applied to the flooring of any conventional type of car and which iscapable of supplying air under a'very considerable pressure as may be-required, no crank-shaft being used.
A further feature is in the provision of an apparatus adapted to be driven by the ex- 5 haustfrom the motor of the car by means described in a co-pending application, for vacuum cleaner and heater, filed January th, 1930, Serial No. 422,103.

In the drawing the numeral 10 designates the floor of the car having an opening 11 in which is set abushing 12 provided with a flange 13 secured on the upper surface of the floor by bolts 14,: and fixed in-the floor are rigid dowel pins 15 passing through the flange to locate a pump body 16.

A cylindrical bore 20 extends axially I through the main portion of'the pump body,
its open forward end being covered by a head 21 engaged by the threads 19.
Extending outwardly from the head are two bosses 22 and 23, respectively upper and lower. both being hollow and communicating with the chambers 20 by ports 24 and 25.
A cap 26 is screw threaded onto the boss 22, the cap having an opening 27, its inner end being shaped into a seatto receive a ball valve 28 held normally thereagainst by a coiled expansion spring 29.
A hollow cap 30, having a tubular extrusion to receive a flexible tube for air delivery, is threaded onto the 'boss 23, the opening through which is provided with a seat to receive a ball valve 31 controlling the part 25 and held thereagainst by a coiled compression spring 32. J
Fitting the bore of the pump chamber 20 is a cupped leather piston 33 secured to a plunger 34 in which are fixed two spaced rods '35 guided in openings in the element 17 and connected by a yoke 36 having on its lower end a pintle 37 This pintle is operatively engaged in a cam groove 38 formed in the upper surface of a disc 39 eccentric to its axis of revolution,'the disc having an annular flange 40 fitting a recess in the under side of the body base and held to rotate therein by a ringnut 41 screw threaded into the bottom of the recess.
Y The disc 39 contains a central recess-42 in its lower side into which extends an adapter bar 43, connected by atransverse pin44.
The lower end of the bar 43 is mounted in a rotative drive member 45 which may be actuatedby anyconvenient means, as by connection with a turbine driven by the exhaust gases of the motor. a
In operation, rotary motion being communicated to the cam disc 39. the cam groove 38 willcause the yoke. plunger stems and piston to move reciprocatively. sucking in air through the port- 24 and discharging it through the port 25 from which it may be conducted to any desired place.
In the modification shown in Figures 3 and 4 the cam is cut to produce a spiral groove 50 to move the pintle 37 slowly in one direction, as in compressing or' forcing the air, and a transverse curved groove 51 for rapid return, these grooves taking the place of the cam groove 38, the remaining elements of the cam being as before described and which are given prime numbers.
lVhile certain preferred embodiments of this device have been shown and described, it will be understood that changes in the form, arrangements, proportions, sizes and details thereof may be made without departing from the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. An air pump comprising a chambered body having a plunger reciprocative therein. and a base-valve controlled inlet and outlet ports for said chamber. a pair of spaced rods fixed in said plunger and guided at their outer ends in said casing. a yoke on said rods having a pintle. a disc rotatable in the base of said body, a cam groove in said disc into which said pintle extends, and aneans for driving said disc.
2. An air pump for automobiles comprising a body. means for attaching said body on the floor of the automobile, apiston'movable in a bore of said body, a pair of'spaced rods fixed in said piston to extend through the wall of said body, a yoke connecting said rods, inlet and outlet ports for the body bore, a disc rotatable in the base of said body on an vaxis at a right angle to the bore. an eccentric piston having a cup leather fitting groove in said disc, a pintle on said yoke engaged in said groove. and means for'communicating rotary motion to said disc.
3. In an air pump for automoblles. a caspintle, and a motor driven cam in said casmg having a sinuous groove to actuate said pintle.
5. An air pump, comprising a body having a base, a piston movableiin a bore of said body, a pair of spaced rods fixed in said piston to extend through the wall of said body, av yoke connecting said rods, inlet and outlet ports for the body bore, a disc rotatable in the base of said body on an axis at a right angle to the bore, an eccentric groove in said disc, a pintle on said yoke engaged in said groove, and means for communicating rotary motion to said disc.
6. In an air pump, a casing having a cylindrical bore, a head removably attached to said casing, said head having inlet and outlet ports, valves controlling said ports operated by the pulsations of the pump, said valves being reversed relative to each other, a piston reciprocatively mounted in thebore, means to prevent rotation of said piston and to guide it during movement, and a rotatable cam associated with and to actuate said piston.
7. An air pump comprising a chambered body having a base, a piston movable in the body, valve controlled inlet and outlet ports for said chamber, a pintle associated with the pistoma disc rotatable in the base of the body, and having a cam groove into which the pintle extends. and means for driving said -disc.
