UNITED PATENT QFFIGE.
FRANK W. CAMPBELL, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN NAPKlN-HOLDE RS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 187,214, dated February 13,1877; application filed January 4, 1877.
To all whom tt may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK W. CAMPBELL, of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Napkin -Holders, of which the following is a specification:
This invention applies to such devices as have been employed for suspending napkins from the collars of persons at the table; and consists in the use of a hook with a slotted shank, through which a bent spring passes, forming on one side of the shank a catch for engaging the edge of the napkin, and on the other a loop,by pressing on which the napkin may be disengaged.
In the annexed drawings, making part of this specification, Figure l is a perspective view, and Fig. 2 is a longitudinal central section.
The same letters are employed in both figures in the indication of the same parts.
A represents the book, which has a flat shank slotted to permit the bent spring B to be attached. It is formed as shown. The free end, which rests against the shank, or napkin when interposed, is serrated to make it hold the fabric more firmly. It is bent to stand clear of the shank, except at the point, and so as to pass through the shank nearly at right angles. It is carried in a loop free of the shank on the side opposite the free end, and is secured by passing it through another slot, or by riveting it to the shank.
To engage the napkin, the holder being held in the hand, by pressing on the loop of the spring the jaw will be opened, and the edge of the napkin may be inserted. To free the napkin, it is only necessary to press on the loop, and the napkin will drop out of the jaw.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A napkin'holder combining in its construction a hook with a slotted shank, and a spring bent as shown, to form a jaw for engaging the napkin on one side of the shank, and a loop on the other for opening the jaw, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereofIhave signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
FRANK W. CAMPBELL.
