BAIR, OF HANOVER,` PENNSYLVANIA FLOOR coNsTnUeTIoN Application led September 15,*:5193Li SerialfNo. 552,944:
The present invention relates to a tloor construction for buildings and has for some of its objects to provide, in a manner as hereinafter vset forth, a iioor which will be strong, durcome apparent from a study of the following y specification, taken in connection with the companying drawings wherein like characters of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, and wherein y Figure l is a top plan view showing an emboflim ent of a floor constructed in accordance with the present invention.
Figure 2 is a. view in vertical section taken substantially on the line 2-2 of Figure vl.
Figure 3 is a detaill view in perspective showing a pair of blocks which constitute the important elements of the invention.
Figure 4 is a view in top plan showing a modification of the invention.
Figure 5 is a vertical sectional view taken substantially o-n the line 5 5 of Figure 4.
Figure 6 is a vert-ical sectional view taken substantially on the line 6-6 of Figure 4.
Referring now to thedrawings in detail,
it will be seen that the reference numeral l blocks communicate. The pairs of blocks,y
as seen in Figure 1 of the drawings, are arranged in spaced,`parallel rows on suitable forms and reinforcing bars 5 are arranged between the rows. l/Vhen arranging the blocks in the rows 'the comparatively thick walls 3 of certain of the pairs are disposed uppermost and the comparatively thick walls 3 of theother pairs are disposed lower-` most as illustrated to advantage in Figure Q ftlie drawings. This is for the ypurpose 'effftaking care ofl compression and. tension.
inthe completed"ioor,`
\ Conereteor other-suitable*material is then poured between `the pairs offbl'ocks. to form the joints `6 and the supporting beams 7. Thefjoi'nts: 6 are'flush-with fthe upper and.- lower surfaces of thefblocks 1,*it being. un necessary to provide La layer fof concrete either above orbelow the blocks. This constitutes ya most importanti and desirable feature vof-theiin'vention. Y l
In the modified form of the rinvention illustratedf inV Figures 4,5.and 6 of. the drawings; adjacentf'pairsnf theblocks are disposed at right angles. The opposed edges of the comparatively thick walls 8 of the pairs of blocks are formed with recesses which, in
. conjunction with each other, define channels or grooves 8 for the reception of the concrete or other joint forming material, as indicated at 9. In other respects, the modified form of the invention is substantially the same as the forni shown in Figures l to 3, inclusive', of the drawings.' k
The pairs of blocks may be arranged in any desired manner in the floor other than as shown in the drawings. For example, the pairs of blocksmay be arranged diagonally with respect to each other. It may be well to here invite attention to the fact that the channels 8 in Figures 4 to 6, inclusive, of the drawings also extend on vertical sides or ends of the pairs of blocks.
t is believed that the many advantages .of a floor constructed in accordance with the present invention will be readily understood, and although the preferred embodiments of the vinvention are as illustrated and described, it is to be understood that further modifications may be resorted to which will fall within the scope of the invention as claimed.
What is claimed is l. A yfloor construction comprising pairs of substantially hollow, coinplemental blocks, said blocks being open on one side and closed on the other sides, the open sides of the pairs of theblocks being disposed in abutting engagement with each other, said blocks including comparatively thin and thick horizon- Y tal Walls, and a joint of suitable material connecting the pairs of blocks together, certain of the opposed edges of the pairs of 5 blocks having opposed recesses therein deiining, in conjunction With each other, channels for the reception of the joint material. 2. A floor construction comprising pairs of substantially hollow, complemental blocks, said blocks being open onone side and closed Y on theirother sides, the pairs of blocks having their open sides in abutting engagement With each other, said pairs of blocks being spaced `from each other-,said pairs of blocks l5 including comparatively thin andthick horizontai walls, the comparatively thick hori-` Zontal Walls of certain of the pairs of blocks being disposed uppermost, the comparatively Y thick horizontal Walls of the other pairs of 29 blocks being disposed loyverlnost, Vreinforcing rods extending between thek pairs of blocks, and a cementitious joint disposed between the pairs of blocks for connecting said pairs together, certain of the abutting edges Y of the pairs of blocks having recesses therein deiining, in conjunction With eachother, channels for therreception of the joint material.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature. 30 v j Y GEORGE L. BAIE.
