Description

ATTACHMENT FOR HUBS Filed March 12, 1931 Patented Aug. 16, 1932 ALBERT KOYEN, OF FREMONT, NEBRASKA ATTACHMENT ron HUBS Application filed March 12, 1931. Serial No. 522,070.
This invention relates to an attachment for hubs and it is an object of the invention to provide a device of this kind which comprises means whereby it is effectively maintained in applied or working position and when so:
applied serves to protect against injury from pebbles or the like, when the vehicle is traveling over gravel roads or the like, that portion of the hub between the hub cap and the places m where the spokes join the hub.
It is also an object of the invention to provide an attachment of this kind which, when in applied or working position, serves to guard the spokes for a short distance adjacent to the hub.
The invention consists in the details of,
construction and in the combination and;
arrangement of the several parts of my im proved attachment for a hub whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of my invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a view in front elevation of a hub attachment constructed in accordance.
with an embodiment of my invention, the associated portion of a wheel being shown in fragment;
Figure 2 is a detailed sectional view taken substantially on the line 22 of Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a sectional view taken radially through the attachment unapplied.
My improved attachment as herein disclosed is preferably formed of rubber and has an annular channel body 1 adapted to be tightly engaged or fitted around the outer end portion of the wheel hub H. This annular channel member 1 defines a central opening through which, when the attachment is in applied position, the hub cap is fully disposed. The outer marginal portion of the applied channel member 1 however closely thought to be obvious that an attachment for approaches the periphery of the hub cap as clearly illustrated in Figure 1.
The inner face of the channel member 1 is formed to provide an annular and continuous groove or channel 2 which provides for a suction action to maintain the attachment in desired position. The inner marginal portion of the annular channel member 1 is defined by an inwardly and outwardly flared apron 3 which, when the attachment is in applied or working position, bears against the inner end portions of the spokes 4 of the Wheel structure. a
My improved attachment is particularly intended to be used in connection with the well known wire type of wheels and when applied affords eifective protection against mar-ring the hub cap C and more particularly chipping of the paint thereon and especially when the vehicle is traveling over a gravel road. It has also been fully demonstrated in practice that the applied attachment in addition to protecting the edge of the hub cap also has a tendency to lessen the throwing of gravel or the like against the under surface of the fender and against the lower ends of-the spokes.
The attachment, as herein disclosed, if desired may be reinforced with fabric embedded therein during its construction. As
this is an obvious expedient in rubber manufacture it is not believed a detailed description and illustration thereof is necessary.
v From the foregoing description it is a hub constructed in accordance with my invention is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled and operated, and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of'some change and modification without departing from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason I do not wish to bunderstood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and 95 formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice except as hereinafter claimed.
I claim 1. A hub attachment comprising a continuous channel member adapted to be tightly engaged around the outer end of a hub, the inner surface of the channel member being provided with an annular groove to provide a suction means for maintaining the attachment applied. a,
2. A vehicle wheel including in combination a hub, and spokesradiating therefrom, a member of flexible deformable, resilient material disposed circumjacent the hub and gripping said hub by its resiliency and having a circularpart radiating therefrom for engagement with one side of the adjacent ortions of the spokes whereby to provide a shield for the hub and spokes.
3. A shield formed of flexible deformable, resilient rubber, and including an annular part adapted to embrace the hub-of a vehicle wheel and to grip said hub by its resiliency, and a substantially conical part contacting one side of the wheel spokes.
4. As a new article of manufacture, a combination hub and spoke shield including an annular part and a conical part projecting laterally from one side. of the annular part and integral with said annular part at the smallest end of said conical part, said an nular part and said conical part respectively being formed of a flexible, deformable elastic material.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aifix my signature.
ALBERT KOYEN.
