The side frame members are joined together at their tops by a tophorizontal plate 11, which may be of'rolled steel or other suitable material, and which is welded to the top rails 10a, by corner welds 110, and plug welds 11fl,formed by boring vertical holes through the sheet and into the top rails, lilling the holes with welding material, and fusing such material to the walls of the holes. It is within the contemplation of the invention to use instead of a single plate 11, a plurality of plates. y
The bottom rails 10b, of the side frame members are joined together by bottom horizontal plates 12, tothe top plates. Y The plates 12,l may be of rolled steel or other suitable material.
To provide for stiening the top and bot-l tom plates they are welded to transverse I-A beams 13', by welds simi-lar to those used for attaching the top plate to the side frame members. lIt is within the contemplation of the invention to use instead of I-beams, plates or pieces of any suitable-form. y
The frame structureis also additionally reinforced by4 inverted transverse T-pieces 14, welded to the top plate by welds similar to those used for attaching the top plate to the Yside frame members, the stem 14a, of the T-pieces may be used to anchor supporting sheets (not shown) for the waist of a boiler. It is within the contemplation of the invention to use instead of the T-pieces, plates or pieces ofV any suitable form.y
It is within the contemplation of the invention to use instead of welds for connecting the described parts, bolts, rivets, or any other Ysuitable means, or combinationv of means as desired. v
`,From the foregoing description, it will be obvious that the primary means for'tying the side frame members together comprises transverse, horizontal plates, suitably braced by transverse vertical plates.V Y
The described construction, enables the side frame members to be machined in pairs before assembly, and is characterized by its extremely light weight and great strength. The material saving in weight-effected can be utilized to increase the weight ofthe boiler, or in the case of heavy road locomotives enables the stoker engine to be placed onk the locomotiveV instead of on the tender as has been required in locomotives using the heavy frames of former practice.
The combined cylinder saddle and bumper beam bracket casting comprises in an integral casting a saddley 15, a bumper bracket 16, a truck center pin 17, guide yoke supports 18, a :cross tie 19, for the guide yoke supports, brake cylinder supports 20, and brake shaft `fulcrums 22. y

The described invention possesses the following advantages:
It provides a frame structure of less weight in proportion to its strength than those heretofore known, enabling the saving in weight to be utilized in increasing the Weight of the boiler, or to permit the Stoker engine of heavy locomotives to be mounted on the locomotive instead of on the tender.
It provides a saddle construction adapted to withstand the heavy stresses incident to service.
It provides a flat top cylinder casting and saddle construction, more economical to manufacture and maintain than thecurved constructions heretofore known.
It provides for supplying steam to the valve chests through passages leading through the cylinder casting directly int-o the smoke box, thus obviating the outside steam supply pipes and their lagging required in former practice.
While one of the preferred forms of construction lias been shown, it is obvious that many variations in procedure, form, arrangement and construction of the parts can be made, and the invention is not therefore limc ited to the particular embodiment disclosed, but includessuch changes and modifications as come within the spirit and scope ofthe invention as set forth in the appendedclaims.
The invention claimed and desired to be secured by Letters Patent is: c
l. A frame for locomotives, comprising a pair of separate side frame members provided with a plurality of pedestaljaws, and plate means welded directly to the top of the upper margins of the side frame members throughout a length thereof comprising at least the pedestal members together.
2. A frame for locomotives, comprising side frame members provided with a plurality of pedestal jaws, upper plate means weld* ed directly to the top of the upper margins of the side fra-me members throughout a length thereof comprising at least the pedestal jaws and tying the said members together, and lower plate means secured to the lower margins of the side frame members and tying said members together.
8. A frame for locomotives, comprising side 'frame members, upper plate means secured to the upper margins of the side frame members and tying the said members together, lower plate means secured to the lower margins of the side frame members and tying said members together, and transverse stiffen, ers secured to the upper and the lower plate means.
