The present invention relates to a rod weeder and has for its prime object to provide simple and compact means for operating the rod from one of the wheels of the weeder.
5 Another very important object of the invention resides in an improved drive mechanism for the revolving rod which is thoroughly efiicient and reliable in use and operation, inexpensive to manufacture, and
1 otherwise well adapted to the purpose for which it is designed.
WVith the above and numerous other objects in view as will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in certain novel 15 features of construction, and in the combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.

Referring to the drawings in detail it will be seen that the frame includes elongated transverse bars 5 and 6 and end longitudinal bars 7 and 8. One wheel 9 is journalled between a pair of intermediately disposed longitudinal bars 10 and 11. The other wheel 12 which is provided with cleats 1 1 is journalled between the end bar 7 and a long1- tudinal intermediate bar 15 adjacent thereto.
35 This wheel 12 is fixed to an axle 16 journalled in bearings 17 and 18 depending from intermediate portions of bars 7 and 15 respec tively. 1
An elongated rod 19 has a universal 4o coupling connection 20 with the inner end of the shaft 16 and extends diagonally across the frame and has a universal coupling connection 21 with a shaft 22. This shaft 22 is journalled in a bearing 23 depending fromthe bar 11 and extends into and is journalled in a gear housing 24 depending from the rear end of the end bar 8. On the shaft 22 within the housing 24 is a beveled gear 25 meshing with the bevel gear 26 therebelow. The bevel gear 26 is, on a shaft 27 journalled in the lower portion of the housing 24 and inclining downwardly and inwardly and having a universal coupling connection 29 with the weeder rod 30. The casing 2d has its lower portion inclining downwardly and outwardly as illustrated to advantage in Figure & so that the bevel gear 26 is in a plane oblique to the plane of the bevel gear 25.
The weeder rod 30 is conventionally mounted to rotate in ground engaging ele- 5 ments 31 on the ends of curved shanks 32 which depend downwardly from the rear of the frame and curved downwardly and for wardly therebelow as clearly illustrated in Figure 3. Obviously when the frame is moved forwardly the turning of the wheel 12 will cause the rotation of the weeder rod.
It is thought that the construction, operation, utility and advantages of this invention Will now be quite apparent to those skilled in this art without a more detailed description thereof.
The present embodiment of the invention has been described in considerable detail merely for the purposes of exemplification since in actual practice it attains the features of advantage enumerated as desirable in the statement of the invention and the above description. 7
It will be apparent that changes in the details of construction, in the combination and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention as hereinafter claimed or sacrificing any of its advantages. 5
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is:
In a rod weeder mechanism of the class described wherein the'same includes a frame, a pair of wheels journalled in the frame, a weeder rod journalled across the frame therebelow, of means for operating the weeder rod from one of the wheels comprising an elongated diagonal rod operatively connected with one of the wheels and having an operative connection with a transverse rod at the side of the frame remote from the last mentioned wheel, a gear housing into which extends such shaft and into which said shaft is journalled, a beveled gear on said shaft within the housing, the lower portion of the housing being inclined outwardly and downwardly, a shaft journalled in the lower portion thereof to incline downwardly and inwardly therefrom, a beveled gear in the housing on the second mentioned shaft and meshing with the first mentioned beveled gear, and a universal coupling connection between the last mentioned shafts and the weeder rod.
