The invention relates to handles and is particularly applicable to handles for motor vehicle doors. One of the objects of the invention is to \provide an improved handle assembly of that type in which thehandle may be alternatively connected to and disconnected from the lock actuating spindle- Another object is to provide a handlea'ssemblythe parts of which may be readily tor-med and assembled. With these as well as other objects in view, the invention resides in the novel features of construction as more fully-hereinafter set to-rth.

The handle assembly in general [comprises the handle 1, the lock actuating spindleQ and means for connecting the spindle to the die to rotate the former With the latter; This handle has the grip 3 and the hollow shank 4k, which latter is provided with the 7 interior longitudinally extending locking groove 5 andthe interior longitudinally spaced annular grooves 6 and 7;, which connect into the longitudinally extending flockn-l roove 5.
The spindle has fixedly secured to its outer end as by means otthe rivets '8 the complementary sheet metal or steel shell sections '9 and 10 which together form in effect a cylindrical shell rotatably fitting Within the shank 4. The outer portions of the adjacent edges of these shell sections are out away to form the-longitudinally extending'slots l1 and 1-2,
steel locking bolt 13. This locking loolt has end portions 14 and l5-wl1ich slidably extend through the slots 11' and 12,, respectively, and bear upon the ends of these slots, the end of the slot 12 being spaced outwardly from the end of the slot 1;1 The end portion 143 is oat substantial height and is" adapted to engage in the longitudinally extending interior looking grove 5 oiz'the shank 4 While'the end portion 315 is adapted to engage in the interior annular grove 7 of the shank. v
For actuating the locking bolt 1 have proyided suitable mechanism which, as shown, is in the nature of a cylinder lock. 16 Within the outer portion .otthe shank 4 and having-the crank 17 extending into the transaerse'slot l8 inthe outer edge of the looking bolt.
The shell sections -.9 .andTZlO are provided with the inner diametrically opposite .or aligned openings 19 and the-outer diametrically opposite or aligned openings 20 which, when the parts are'asseln'bled, are located respectively inwardly and outwardly beyond the locking bolt The inner openings are opposite the interior annular groove 6 of the shank 4 and these openings, as well as this annular gnove are engagedby the spring 21 which theneby rotatahly connects the shell sections and consequently the spindle to the handle shank. The lock cylinder is formed with the :amular groove 22 adapted to extend opposite the openings 20 and this annular groove and these openings are engaged by the spring '23 which thereby rotatalbly connects the lock cylinder to the shell sections and conseduentlvholds the lock cylinder in the hamdle shank.
In assemblingjthe shell sections 9 and 10 :are riveted to the spindle 2 by the rivets 8. The spring 21 is then inserted into the shell form-ed by these shell sections With its elongated ends 24 projecting through the openings 19. 'The locking bolt l3'is then placed in the slots 11 and 12 of the shell and the handle shank i is then slipped over this assembly until the two ends 2i .ot the spring Qiengage the interior annular groove '6 of the shank, the parts now being held from relative longitudinal movement. The spring; 23 is then inserted into the shell with its elongated ends -25 projecting through the openings 20, after which the lock cylinder 16 is inserted into the outer end of the handle shank 4 andmoved inwardly untilthe spring 23 en gages the annular groove QQQatWhich time the lockcyli-n- .der is then held in place. i
rotation of the handle will cause rotation of the spindle, this being due to the fact that the end portion 14 of the locking bolt 13 engages the interior longitudinally. extending locking groove-5 in the handle shank. To release the spindle from the handle, the crank 17 of the lock cylinder 16 may berotated to move the bolt transversely and thus" disengage its end portion 14 from the locking groove 5. At this time the end portion 15 of this locking bolt engages in the interior annular groove 7 of the handle shank so that the handlemay, vbe rotated without efiecting rotation of the spin.- dle." 'By reason of the end portions of the locking bolt slidably engaging the shell sections, the locking bolt is at all times held from becoming displaced so that it may be freely moved when desired.
What I claim as my invention is:
1. The combination with a handle and a lock actuating spindle, of a shell fixedly secured to said spindle and rotatably connected to said handle, and a bolt slidably mounted upon said shell and having portions engaging opposite sides thereof, one of said portions being engageable with said handle for connecting said shell to said handle to rotate the former from the latter.
2. The combination with" a handle and a lock actuating spindle, of a shell fixedly secured to'said spindle and rotatably connected to said handle, and a transversely movable bolt slidably mounted upon said shell for connecting said shell to said handle for rotating the former from the latter, said bolt having longitudinally spaced portions engaging said shell. r I i 8. The combination with a handle and a lock actuating spindle, of complementary shell sections fixedly secured to said spindle and rotatably connected to said handle, and a bolt for connecting said spindle to said handle to rotate the former with the latter, said bolt being slidable and constantly engaging adjacent edges of said sections.
4. The combination with a handle and a lock actuating spindle, of a shell fixedly secured to said spindle and extending within said shank androtatably connected thereto, a transversely movable bolt slidably mounted upon said shell for connecting said spindle tosaid handle to rotatejthe formerwith the latter, and mechanism for actuating said bolt rotatably connected to said shell.
5. The combination with a, handle having a shank and'a lock actuating spindle, of a .bolt within said shank, mechanism within said shank for actuating *said bolt; and a shell extending within said shank and en'- gageable by said bolt for rotating said'spindle with said shank, cooperating means carried by said shell and shank for rotatably connectlng said shell tofsaid shank and means for securing said bolt actuating mechanism to said shell.
6. The combination of a handle having a hollow shank provided with a longitudinal- 1y extending interior locking groove and an annular interior groove, a lock actuatingv spindle, complementary shell sections fixedly secured to said spindle and extending within said shank, means engaging the annular groove and'sai'd shell sections 'for rotatably connecting said shell sections to said shank, and a transversely movable bolt slidably mounted upon said shell sections and having a locking portion engageable with the longitudinally extending locking groove, mechanism within said shank for actuating; said bolt, and means engaging said locking mechanism and shell sections for rotatably connecting said locking mechanism to said shell sections. 7. The combination of a handle having a hollow shank provided with aninterior longitudinally extending locking groove and "a pair of interior annular grooves, a lock actuating' spindle, complementary shell sections fixedly secured to said spindle and extending within said shank, spring means engaging one of the interior annular grooves for r0- tatably connecting said shell sections to said shank, a transversely movable bolthaving end portions slidably engaging adjacent edges of said shell sections, one of theend portions being engageable in the interior longitudinally extending locking grooveand the other of the end portions being engageable in the other of the interior annular grooves, a lock cylinder within said shank for actuating said bolt, and spring means engaging said lock cylinder and shell sections for rotatably connecting said lock cylinder to said shell sections.
8. The combination of a handle having a hollow shank provided with'a longitudinally extending interior locking groove and an annular interior groove, a lock actuating spindle, complementary shell sections fixedly secured to said'spindle and extending within said shank, means engaging the annular groove and said shell sections for rotatably connecting said shell sections to said shank, and a transversely movable bolt slidably mounted'upon said shell sections and having a locking portion engageable with the longitudinally extending locking groove.
9. The combination of a handle having a hollow shank provided with an interior-longitudinally extending locking groove and a pair of interior annular grooves,a lock actuating spindle, complementary shell sections fixedly secured tosaid spindle and extending within said shank, spring means engaging one of the interior annular grooves for rotatably connecting said shell sections to said shank, and a transversely movablebolt having end portions slidably engaging adjacent edges of said shell sections, one ofthe end portions being engageable in the interior longitudinally extending locking groove and the other of the end portions being engageable in the other of the interior annular grooves.
10. The combination with a handle and a lock actuating spindle, of a shell rigid with said spindle and rotatably connected to said handle, and a slidable bolt having end portions extending through opposite sides of said shell and being constantly engaged therewith.
11. The combination with a handle: and a lock actuating spindle, of a shell rigid with said spindle, means for rotatably connecting said shell to said handle, a transversely movable bolt for connecting said spindle to said handle to rotate the former with the latter, and actuating means for said bolt secured to said shell.
12. The combination of a handle having a hollow shank provided with a circumferential internal groove, a lock actuating spindle, a shell rigid with said spindle and extending within said shank, means engaging said circumferential groove and said shell for rotatably connecting said shell to said shank, and a transversely movable bolt having a portion projecting beyond said shell and engaging said shank for rotating the former from the latter.
