This invention relates to power presses of the type-having differentially operated workholding and shaping parts, and particularly to the means employed for operating said parts.
A primary object of the invention is th provision of a press of this character having three relatively movable work-coacting parts, in the present instance a blank-holder, an upper plunger and a lower plunger, and having a simple and efficient unitary operating means for imparting the requisite movements and dwell to the respective parts.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent from the following detailed description thereof.-
While the invention in its broader aspect is capable of embodiment in numerous forms, oneembodiment thereof is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a front elevation of a press embodying the invention, with the parts in normal or at rest position and with the dies removed;

Referring to the drawings, 1 designates the press frame which includes the two spaced uprights 1 connected at their tops by the top or crown piece 1", near their lower ends by the bed 1, and at their lower ends by the bottom piece 1. The top piece 1 has a vertical opening therethrough to permit the mounting of operating parts therein, as hereinafter described, and the frame sides have feet or laterally projecting portions 1 for mounting on a floor or other suitable supporting means for the press.
The customary blank-holder 2 is mounted above the bed 1 for vertical reciprocatory movements between guides::3 secured to the respective frame sides 1 and ja vertical opening therethrough in which the upper plunger 4 is mounted for'vertical reciprocatory movements. The blank-holder operating means in the present instance includes, at each side of so the press, a pitman or connectingbar 15, attached at its lower end to a crank or eccentric pin 16 on the outer side of the respective gear 14-. and at its upper end to a slide .block 17 mounted for vertical reciprocatory 95 movements at the outer side of the respective frame upright 1 between guides 18 secured thereto. Each block 17 at its upper end is connected by links'19 to an associated pair of rocker-arms 20, intermediate their 9 ends, said arms being mounted at their outer ends on pivot studs 21 projecting from the press frame above and at opposite sides of the connected block 17, and having their inner ends projecting inwardly over the block and connected by respective links 22 to respective rocker-arms 23, projecting in wardl at the same side of the frame from rock-shafts 24.
The shafts 24 are two in number, being mounted respectively in the front and rear portions of the frame at the top thereof and parallel to the crank-shaft axis. The arms 23 are carried by the outer extended ends of the shafts 24, at the respectiue side of the frame, and each shaft is provided intermediate its ends above the blank-holder 1 with a pair of corresponding outwardly projecting rocker-arms 25, each of which is con nected with the adjacent corner of the blankholder by a respective link 26. The links 26 and their respective arms 25 form toggle connections between the blank-holder and the respective rock shaft, and the connection between the rock-shafts and slide block 17 is such that when the block is at the limit of its down stroke said toggle connections are in broken position to hold the blankholder in elevated position, and when the slide blocks are raised, a lowering workengaging movement is imparted to the blankholder.
The operating means for the upper plunger 4 comprises, at each side of the press, an cecentric 27 mounted on the respective end of the crank-shaft 10 between the gear 14 and frame side, and this eccentric is connected by a strap and connecting bar 28 to the lower end of a vertically movable slide bar 29, which extends upward at the inner side of the slide block 17 and has its upper and lower end portions coacting with guides 30 and 31, respectively, secured to the frame side above and below the slide block 17, and diroot the vertical movements of the bar 29.
The upper end of the bar 29 is connected by a link 32 to the outwardly projecting end of a lever 33, the fulcrum pin 34 of which is mounted in the adjacent side of the top piece 1 with its axis transverse to that of the rock-shafts 24. The lever 33 is of straight form and projects through a side opening in the top piece 1 of the frame. The free end of the inner arm of the lever 33 is connected by a link 35 to a rocker-arm 36 mounted on a pivot 37 and the free end of this rocker without its point of connection with the link 35 is connected by a link 38 to the upstanding arm of a bell-crank lever 39, mounted on a pivot 40 in the top piece 1 with its axis transverse to that of the rock-shafts 24. The other arm of the lever 39 extends inwardly toward the center of the frame and is connected by a link 41 to the central portion of the adjacent end of the upper plunger 4, said link and the connected arm of the lever 39 00* operating to form a toggle connection between the plunger 4 and plvot 40. The inner end of the lever 33-and the parts connecting it with the link 40 are disposed withm the hollow of the top piece 1 at the respective side of the frame and the arrangement and connection of these parts is substantially as illustrated in Fig. 1. It will be understood that the connection just described between the crank-shaft 10 and one end of the plunger is duplicated at the opposite side of the frame for the other end of the plunger.
It will be noted that the operating connections between the crank-shaft 10 and the blank-holder 2 and plunger 4 are such that upward movements of the respective slide parts 17 and 29 impart lowering movements "to the blank-holder and plunger and also that the movements of the lower plunger 5 are opposed to the simultaneous movements of the upper plunger and blank-holder, thus causing the operating parts of the press to have a balanced action. It will also be noted that the blank-holder and upper and lower plungers are all operated from the main crank-shaft of the press and that the connections between the crank-shaft and both the blank-holder and the upper plunger are such as to cause the blank-holder and upper plunger te lower substantially to ether with the blank-holder first engaging t e work and the two members then having a prolonged dwell while the lower plunger is performing its work, as illustrated by the motion diagram in Fig. 4.
It is apparent in the operation of the press, and particularly by reference to the diagram in Fig. 4, that during a cycle of operations the blank-holder first starts on its down stroke and is then immediately followed by the upper plunger, the two then continuing downward at approximately the same speed, with the blank-holder first engaging the work so as to hold it firmly at its edges while the plunger and its die are effecting a predetermined shaping of the work piece. The blankholder and upper plunger then have a prolonged dwell during which period the lower plunger with its die imparts a predetermined upward shaping of the work piece and then recedes from the work, after which the blankholder and upper plunger move upward to at rest position.
It is found in practice that the arrangement of operating parts for the three work-engaging parts, substantially as shown and described, produces a triple action press which is balanced in its action and highly efficient in its operation.
I wish it understood that the invention is not restricted to any particular form or arrangement of the arts but that it is capable of numerous modi cations and changes without departing from the spirit of the claims.

In a power press, a frame, a lower plunger, an upper plunger, and a blank-holder mounted in said frame, a crank-shaft mounted in the frame, crank and pitman connection between said shaft and the lower plunger, and separate connections between said shaft and the other plunger and said blank-holder for reciprocating the same from a rotation of the shaft and causing them to dwell in blank-engaging position during the blank-shaping movement of the other plunger, said last-mentioned connections each having rocking parts, with the axes of the rocking parts of one parallel ,to the crank shaft axis, and with the axes of the. rocking parts of the other transverse to the crank-shaft axis.

In a power press, a frame, a lower plunger, an upper plunger, and a blank-holder mounted in said frame, a crank shaft mount ed inthe frame, crank and pitman connection between said shaft and the lower plunger, and separate connections between said shaft and the other plunger and said blank-holder for reciprocating the same from a rotation of the shaft and causing them to dwell in blank-engaging position during the blank-shaping movement of the other plunger, the connection with said blank-holder having rocking parts, the axes of which are parallel to those of the crank-shaft.
