Description

0. DAVIS.
SKYLIGHT.
Patented Feb. 6, 1877.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE. I
OLIVER DAVIS, OF GLOUCESTER, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN SKY-LIGHTS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 1 8'7, E08, dated February 6, 1877; application tiled December 26, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OLIVER DAVIS, of Gloucester, in the county of Essex, State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fastenings for Sky-Lights, of which the following is such a full, clear, and exact description as will enable others skilled in the .art to which it pertains to construct and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, similar letters indicating corresponding parts in the different figures.
The object of this invention is to produce a system of fastenings for sky-lights, especially those used upon vessels, which shall not only render them doubly secure when closed, but also allow them to be readily adjusted at dif ferent points when open, so as to give a more or less free circulation of air. It also furnishes a means of securing the adjusting-hasp parallel with the under side of the sky-light, thus preventing it from projecting into the space below, as is the case with those in common use. And the invention consists in pro viding the sky-light with a hinged adjustinghasp and a hook, upon which the hasp is placed when not in use, in connection with an additional hasp, by which the sky-light may be secured to the combings of its hatch,as will be hereinafter fully described, and then specifically pointed out in the claim.
Figure 1 is a view of a sky-light partly open, showing the arrangement of the two hasps. Fig. 2 is a sectional view, one side of the sky-light being closed, so as to exhibit the position of the adjusting -hasp when upon the hook, and the other open to show the method of adjustment. Fig. 3 is an enlarged view of the hook and adjusting-hasp.
A represents the combings of a sky-light hatch, and B a sky-light, the glass in which may be protected by bars a, which are secured to the frame. To the side pieces I) of this frame are attached by hinged joints the two hasps c and d, the hasp 0 being provided with a mortise or opening, which, when the sky-light is closed, passes over a turning-button, e, the turning of which until the thumbpiece assumes a horizontal direction secures the hasp in position and prevents the raising of the sky-light. The hasp d is also hinged l to the piece I), and is provided with a series of mortises of such size as to pass easily over one of the turning buttons 6, which are secured to the combings A in such a manner as to be readily turned by the thumb and fingers.
It will be apparent that when it is desired to open the sky-light the size of the opening may be regulated at will by means of the series of mortises in the strap d, each mortise giving a difl'erent degree of opening to the sky-light; and it will be further observed that after placing the hasp d over the button it is firmly secured in that position by turning the button, thus preventing it from becoming disengaged and allowing the sky-light to fall, through the motion of the vessel, or, if it be upon a building, from the force of the wind or other means.
Attached to the central bar 9 of the skylight frame is a hook, h, which receives the hasp d when not in use, and prevents it from falling down and swinging about, to the detriment of the adjacent wood-work and any other matter which may come in its way; the hasp c affording a means of securing the sky-light when the other is upon the hook.
Supporting-rods have been heretofore attached to the sides .of a sky-light, for the purpose of retaining it in position when raised, and such rods have been so hinged that when not in use they could be placed upon and supported by pins inserted in the sides of the sky-light frame, as shown in the patent of T. Wehrle, August 28, 1876, No. 181,547; and I do not, therefore, claim such method of construction.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, the following:
A sky-light provided with the hook h, in combination with the secnring-hasp'c, adjusting-hasp d, and turning buttons 6, all constructed and operating substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I hereunto affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
OLIVER DAVIS.
