Description

P. C. KIERNS.
SHOVEL.
INVENTOB ATTORNEYS.
PETERS, PHOTO-HEIHQGRAPNER, WASHINGTON. D. C,
UNITED STATES PATENT QFFIGE,
PATRICK O. KIERNS, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN SHOVELS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 187,020, dated February 6, 1877; application filed January 13, 1877.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PATRICK O. KIERNS, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Shovel, of which the following is a specification Figure 1 is a front elevation. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section on line a; a, Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
My improvement consists in providing a tang or extension on the upper end of the shovel-blade, that is received by a split handle, which extends a short distance over the sides of the upper portion of the shovel-blade, and which is covered and re-enforced by triangular plates riveted to the shovel-blade.
In the drawing, A is a shovel-blade, of any ordinary form, provided with a tang or extension, at, which is cut from'the sheet ofiron or steel from which the shovel-blank is made simultaneously with the blank, and is stamped into the required form. B is a handle, that is split from its lower end upward, to receive the tang 01,, and it extends a short distance downward over the sides of the shovel-blade. The lower portions of the handle on the sides of the shovel-blade are covered by triangular plates 72, which are secured by rivets 0, that pass through both of the triangular plates and through the shovel-blade. The rivet 6 passes through the said plates and through the lower a portion of the handle and through the shovelblade. 61 d are rivets that pass through the handle B and the tang a.
The advantages gained by my improvement are that the handle, having the tang covered by wood, is more comfortable to use in cold weather, and the usual outside strap being dispensed with, the handle is smooth throughout its entire length.
Having thus described myinvention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent A shovel consisting of a blade, A, having a the tang a, the split handle B, and triangular plates 12, combined, substantially as herein shown and described.
- PATRICK G. KIERNS.
