STRIKER FOR DOORLOCKS Filed Dec. 24, 1950 45 a V i BY %ATTORNEY Patented Aug. 2, 1932 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE ALEXANDER S. KATZ, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK STRIKER FOR DOORLOGKS Application filed December 24, 1980. Serial No. 504,572.
This invention relates to strikers or keepers for door locks and is particularly directed to a highly improved adjustable keeper for a latch lock.
' Among the objects of this invention is to In the accompanying drawing, in which.
is shown one of the various possible illustrative embodiments of this invention,
.Fig. 1 is a rear elevational view of a keeper embodying the invention;
Fig. 2 is a cross-sectional view taken on line 22 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a rear elevational view of a modified construction;
.Fig. 4 is a cross-sectional View taken on line H of Fig 3; and i Fig. 5 is a view similar to Fig. 4 but show; ing the strike zmember in a differently adjusted position? Referring now in detail to the drawing, .10 designates a keeper embodying the invention comprising a member 11 provided with an end plate 12 having outwardlyextending ears eachfor'med with anlopening l i'for receiving anysuitable fastening means, whereby said member-ll may be attached to a door at right angles thcreto,, is a rearwall 16, side opening 21is the shank 22 of the strike member, 23.,, A plurality of, wasli'ers or 24' ]arn b.,15 ,Eiritending vfrom,saicLendplate12,
may be interposed between the .end 25 of the shank 22 and the end wall 12. Said end wall 12 is formed with a countersunk opening 26 slidably receiving a screw 27 the shims 24 likewise being formed with registering 0penv ings 28 for sl'idably receiving said screw. The shank 22 is formed with a screw threaded opening 29 for receiving the screw threaded end of the screw 27. It will now be obvious .that upon tightening the screw, the strike member will be clamped against the shims to produce a rigid construction.
Any suitable number of shims may be interposed between the end wall 12 and the strike member, whereby the position'of the head 30 of the strike member with respect to the door jamb may be adjusted. Said head 30 is formed with an inclined inner surface 31 adapted to be engaged by the edge 31a of the lock bolt, said head extending beyond the end portion 20 of said front wall 19. A compression spring 35 serves to vpress the bolt toward the keeper whereby the edge 31a of the bolt tends to ride on the inclined surface 31 for tightly clamping the door or like portion to which the lock may be fixed. A screw 32 screwed within a screw threaded opening 33 formed in the wall 19 serves to clamp the strike member 22. against the rear wall 16, thus adding tothe rigidity of the construction.
To adjust the position of the strike member it is merely necessary to loosen the screw 31, unscrew the screw 27 remove some or, all of the shims 24 .or add shims, and then again I screw the. screw 27 withinsthe ,screw threadq ed opening of the shank. I v 1,;
; In accordance with the modified constru tion in Figs. 3, 4 and 5, there is providedi aa member 40,,having ears.41,' providedwith Saidmember 40 further comprisesa rear wall 42,-sidewalls. 43. and 4st anda parallelwall 45,.interconne cting saidsidewalls 43,44. The rear wall, 42, is formed.- on the inner surface thereof Wltil lt cylindrical bore o r, bearing opening 46 for," ,the purpose hereinafter ap? is a member 47, having a cylindrical extension 48 received within said bearing opening 46 and a substantially square-shaped portion 49 adapted to contact the inner surface 50 of said rear wall 42. The member 47 is provided with a transverse cylindrical opening 52 coaxial with the cylindrical portion 48. The axis of said opening 52 is preferably eccentric with respect to the edges of said squareshaped portion 49, that is, the perpendicular distances-from the axis of said opening52 to the edge of said square-shaped portion 49 are unequal.
Received between the side walls 43, 44 of member 40 is a strike member 55 having a head 56 extending away from said wall 42. Said member 55 is formed with a transverse slot 57 on the rear surface thereof for receiving the portion 49 of member 47.
It will be noted that the distance between the parallel edges 58 and 59 of said slot is equal to the length of an edge of the portion 49. The length of the slot, however, is at least equal to the length of one of the edges of said portion 49 plus the difference between the shortest perpendicular distance from the axis of the openin 52 to one of the edges of said portion 49 an the longest perpendicular distance between said axis and an edge of said portion 49. This construction will permit the member 47 to be moved to four posi-. tions at right angles to one another and the square-shaped portion 49 will be snugly received within the slot 57. The member 55 is provided with a longitudinal countersunk slot 60 and extended through said slot is a screw 61 slidably extending within said opening 52 and having a screw threaded end portion 62 which may be screwed into a screw threaded opening 63 formed in said wall 42 on the inner surface thereof and disposed coaxially with respect to the cylindrical bearing opening 46.
It will now be understood that the member 47 may be moved to four positions for adjusting the position of the strike member 55 with respect to the door j amb, and in each adjusted position the screw 61 may be tightened to fix the strike member 55 to the member 40.
Thus in the position shown in Figs. 3 and 4, the strike member 55 is in the outermost position thereof, since the perpendicular distance from the axis of screw 61 to the edge of the square portion 49 which contacts the edge 58 is greater than the perpendicular disance from said axis to any ofthe other three edge portions of square-shaped portion 49. For ad'usting the keeper from the position shown in ig. 3 to the position shown in Fig. 5, the screw 61 is unloosened and the member 48 rotated 90 i a counterclockwise direction (lookin at F1 3). The member 55 is then replace and t e screw 61 again screwed for clampin the parts together. This adjustment wi bring the member 55 inwardly toward the door amb. The remaining two adjustments may be made by rotating the member 48 to the proper position, and clamping the parts together by means of the screw 61.
The head 56 may likewise be formed with an inner inclined surface 56a adapted to be engaged by an outer edge of the projected bolt for causing a tight clamping or closing of the door on which the bolt is mounted.
It will thus be seen that there is provided a device in which the several objects of this invention are achieved, and which is well adapted to meet the conditions of practical use.
As various possible embodiments might be made of the above invention, and as various changes might be made in the embodiment above set forth, it is to be understood that all matter herein set forth or shown in the accompanying drawing is to be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
