flllorney Inventor Patented Aug. 2, 1932 JOHN EDWARD IIULING, 01 Bvrmm, NEW YORK SIGNALING; pnvrcn- 1 Application filed May 13, 1,931. Serial 15,537, 30,
This invention relates to an electric signaling device and has for its primary object to provide in a manner as hereinafter set forth, an apparatus of this character embodying a novel construction and arrangement of parts for giving an audible signal to the attention of an automobile service station when an automobile approaches a fuel dis-- pensing pump, the signal to be located at any desired point or points.
Other objects of the invention are to provide a signaling device of the character described which will be simple in construction, strong, durable, efficient and reliable in operation and which may be manufactured and installed at low cost.
All of the foregoing and still further objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent from a study of the following specification, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings wherein like characters of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, and wherein Figure 1 is a view in top plan showing a pair of signaling devices in accordance with this invention installed for use adjacent the ends of a series of gasoline dispensing pumps.
Figure 2 is a view in vertical section taken substantially on the line 22 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a detail View taken substantially on the line 3-3 of Figure 1.
Figure at is a sectional view taken substantially on the line 4-4: of Figure 1.
Referring to the drawings in detail, it will be seen that the reference numeral 1 designates the usual elongated island or platform upon which a series of gasoline dispensing pumps 2 is mounted. Adjacent at least one side of the island or platform 1 is the usual driveway 3. As seen in Figure 1 a signaling device in accordance with this invention is disposed at each end of the series of pumps 2 and extends across the driveway for actuation by the wheels of an automobile passing thereover. When a driveway is provided on both sides of the island or platform 1, the actuating means for each signaling device at the ends of the series of pumps is provided for each driveway, as indicated in broken lines in Figure 1 of the drawings.
The' signaling device comprises an elon gated-metallic bar 1 which is disposed transversely across the driveway and having its outer end anchored to the driveway and elevated slightly thereabove by a supporting bracket 4. The bar 1 is secured to the bracket t-as at 5; Secured tothe lower side of the bar 1 and disposed transversely with respect thereto is an angle bar 6 having its end portions slidably engaged with the lag screws 7 which are anchored in the driveway.- Thebar 1 is provided with an upwardly offset inner end portion 8 which is adjustably supported through the medium of a bracket 9.
Afcasing 10 1's mounted ofiset portion 8-of the bar 1" and mounted in said casing is a standard 11 having a vibrator arm 12 mounted thereon and electrically insulated therefrom. Acontact member 13 is mounted on the free end portion of the vibrator arm 12 for engagement with an adjustable contact 14 which is threaded in the free end portion of an arm 15 of electric current conducting material which, in turn, is mounted on the upper end portion of the stailidard 11 and is in electrical contact therewit 1. i
Binding'posts 15 and 16 are mounted on the casing 10, the binding posts 15 being electricallyinsulated from said casing. It may be well to here state that the casing 10 is of electric current conducting material. A conductor wire 17 electrically connects the binding posts 15 with the vibrator arm 12. The binding post 16 has electrical contact with the casing 10, and through said casing and the standard 11 with the arm 15, the standard 11 also being of electric current conducting material.
An electric bell 18 is interposed in a circuit 19 which is connected with the binding posts 15 and 16 and which includes a storage battery 20 and a suitable control switch 21.
The electric bell may be disposed at any desired point and, if desired, a plurality of bells may be provided and located at various points. Suitable switches may be provided when a plurality of bells are installed on the upwardly 7 for selectively connecting the bells in the electric circuit for deenergization when the signaling device is actuated by anautomobile.
Also, if desired, electric signaling means other than a bell may be provided, such as a light.
In use, an automobile or other vehicle passing over the bar 1 depresses said bar in a manner to move the casing 10 and cause vibration of the vibrator arm 12. Vibration of the arm 12 engages contact 13 with the contact 14 in a manner to rapidly open and close the circuit in Which the signaling bell is interposed and in thismanner said signaling bell is alternately energized and deenergized for sounding a signal.
It is believed that the many advantages of a signaling device in accordance With this invention Will be readily understood, and although the preferred embodiment of the invention is as illustrated and described, it is to be understood that changes in the details of construction and in the combination 7 and arrangement of parts may be resorted to Which Will fall Within the scope of the invention as claimed.
What is claimed is 1. In a structure of the class described, a casing, a bracket arranged vertical Within the casing, a freely vibrating arm projecting horizontal from the intermediate portion of the bracket and having a contact element at the outer portion thereof, an arm carriedby the upper portion of said bracket immediately above said vibrator arm and having an adjustable contact for engagement by the first named contact element, and means to move the casing to actuate said vibrator arm.
2. In a structure of the class described, a flexible bar having an offset portion, a signaling mechanism mounted on the offset portion, said offset portion of the bar being provided With a depending member having a slot, and a standard having a laterally projecting pin extending through said slot to limit movement of said offset portion.
In testimony whereof Iaffix my signature.
JOHN EDWARD HULING.
