IMPROVEMENT IN WAGON'HOUNDS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 186,809, dated January 30, 1877; application filed January 29, 1876.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ANDREW R. OUsHMAN, of Memphis, Scotland county, Missouri, have made a new and useful Improvement in Hind Hounds for Wagons; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.

Figure l of the drawings is a plan view of the bounds. Fig. 2 is an end view of the axle, bolster, and hounds. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the same.

This invention relates to the hind hounds or futchells of a wagon; and it consists in adapting the same to receive and firmly hold a coupling-pole or reach, and in combining metal straps or braces therewith, said straps or braces being arranged above and below said coupling-pole, as hereinafter fully described.

In the annexed drawings, A designates the futchells or hind hounds ofa wagon, which are formed of a single piece of wood, bent into the form of a horseshoe, and firmly secured by its tapering ends between rear axle B and bolster C. D designates a reach of ordinary construction, which is also secured, at

or near the rear end, between said axle and bolster, and which is provided with a series of vertical perforations, d d, for adjusting the length of the vehicle. Said reach is let into a recess, E, on the lower sideof the thick middle and front part of said curved piece or hind hounds A, so as to be flush with the lower side thereof, and is secured by acoupling-pin,

F, which passes down through a perforation in said curved piece or hind hounds, immediately over said recess, E, and also through one of the perforations d in said reach. G G are two curved metal straps or braces, which correspond to the shape of the front part of said hind hounds A, and are respectively secured t0 the upper and lower sides thereof. Said straps add to the security of the attachment of said coupling-pole, and brace both it and said hind hounds against strain. They also prevent said hind hounds A from being worn by coupling-pin F, which passes through said straps G G.

I am aware that wagons have been construct-ed with hounds bent from a single piece of wood, and provided with bracing-straps of metal on their inner and outer faces. But this construction is inferior to mine in several respects. Especially, it fails to protect the bounds or futchells against wear by the coupling-pin, unless an additional piece of metal is employed.

My invention dispenses with the need for such additional piece of metal, and braces the hind hounds by the same straps, which preserve them from being worn.

I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent Hind hounds or futchells A, formed from a single piece and recessed at E, in combination with perforated reach D set into said recess, coupling-pin F, and bracing-straps G G, which are secured to the upper and under sides of said curved hind hounds or futchells, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
