My invention has for an object to provide a simple, convenient and easily manipulated device for use Ly physicians and nurses in examining and treating patients when such examination or treatment can better and more readily be made by raising the hips or shoulders, or both, above the level of the bed.

Further, the invention has for an object to provide a device onto which the patientcan be slipped Without disturbing the comfort of the patient unduly.

Further, the invention has for its object to provide a device that can be used from either side of the bed as may be found most convenient.

Further, it is an object to provide a portable device consisting of a suitable base on which is mounted a pan of a size to receive I the trunk of the body leaving the head and legs overhanging, together with suitable means located between the pan and base ad] acent either end for effecting a straight up and down lift at either end of the pan so as to lift either end or both ends for the purpose of either inclining the pan with one end elevated and the other end down, or elevating both ends of the pan to different degrees or to the same degree as may be desired in order to make the intended examination in a manner most convenient to the physician and comfortable to the patient. y

Further, it is an object of the invention to provide a device which may not only be used for examination purposes but is equally useful in connection with the use of the douche or bed pan so that the patient may be placed in the most comfortable position While the douche or bed pan is employed.

Other objects v vill in part be obvious and e 4o in part be pointed out hereinafter.

To the attainment of the aforesaid objects and ends, the invention still further resides in thenovel details of construction, combination and arrangement of parts, all of which will be first fully described in the following detailed description, then be particularly pointed out in the appended claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which Y 5o Figure 1 is a perspective view of my inveninches Wide and twenty-seven inches long and yframe 1 and plate 2) and located adjacent reference indicate like parts in all of the figures, 1 is a rectangular frame composed of a rod bent to shape and carrying a sheet metal plate 2. The plate 2, in practice, is preferably of approximatelyY 'twenty to twenty-four it has portions removed at its sides as at 3 to expose portions of the rod 1 as handles.

At a suitable distance from each end of the base (the base being composed of the the sides of the base are pairs of transversely extending angles 4-1 riveted, welded, or otherwise rigidly secured to the base plate 2. Each pair of angles carries a pivot bolt 5 to which one end of each'y of a pair of links 6*-6 7 are connected, the said ends of the links lying flatwise between the adjacent angles of a p Over the base is located the body pan which is also composed of a rectangular rod-like frame 7 (approximately '20 by 27 inches) carrying a sheet metal pan 8. While the base part of the device is flat the pan part is preferably concaved slightly in cross section as shown in Figure 2. Near each end at the sides of the plate 8 there are portions removed, as at 9, to expose port-ions of therods 7 as handles.

Beneath the pan 8 and' directly above the angles -1-4 are corresponding pairs of angles 10-10 rigidly secured to the plate and carrying pivot bolts 5 on which the upper ends of the pairs of links 11 are'pivoted. The links 1l have their other ends pivoted at 12-12 to nuts 13 on screws 14 and the other ends of the links 6-6 are also pivoted at 12-12 to the nuts 13, there being tvvo pairs of nuts 13 on each screw 14. l

Each screw 14 has a put-like head 15 to be received in the socket 16 ofa crank 1T, by

means of which the screw may be turned to separate the pairs of nuts or draw then together for the purpose of lowering or raising the pan, it being understood that the screws are provided with reversed thread sections for operating with the respective pairs of nuts. s

The exposed portions of the rods 3 may not only function as convenient handles by which the device may be slid over the bed, but they may be also used in connection with suitable straps for strapping the device to the bed if found desirable to do so.

The exposed portions of the rods 7 may not only serve as convenient handles for the patient to take hold of, but they, too may be used in connection with suitable straps passed over the body of the patient to hold the patient to the pan if so desired, or if it be,

found desirable to cover the panvwith a sheeting the sides of the sheeting may be turned under the frame and secured through the openings by pinning.

In using the device the patient is placed on a pad or blanket, the device is put on the bed next to the patient and the patient pulled onto the device. If al vaginal examination is to be made the crank is placed on the screw at the end nearest. the hips of the patient and that end of the pan alone is elevated tothe extent desired, or both ends of the pan may be in part or wholly elevated to throw the pan at different angles to the base as the physician may desire.

When a bed pan is to be used the edge of the pan locatedladjacent the hips of the patient is slightly elevated and the wedge end of the bed pan is slipped over the base l under the pan 8. The pan 8 may be placed at any desired angle to suit the comfort and convenience o f the patient at the time.

It should be understood that the joints between the links and the base and pan have sufficient looseness or lay to enable either end of the pan to be raised and lowered separately as desired.

The device is preferably made of metal that will resist rust, such for example as galvanized iron or rustless steel/so that it may-be properly cleansed and sterilized.

-From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing it is thought the complete construction, operation and advantages of my invention will be clear to those skilled in the art to which it relates. Y

What I claim is:

1. A device of the character'stated comprising a flat base adapted to be set on a bed, a pan designed to t the trunk of a patient, and mechanical connections between the pan adjacent its ends and the base and including means by which either or both ends of the pan may be raised and lowered at will, and

3. A device of the character stated comprising a flat base adapted to be set on a bed, a pan designed to fit the trunk of a patient, and mechanical connections between the pan adjacent its ends and the base and including means by which either or both ends of the pan may be raised and lowered at will, land the pan held at any angle to the base at which it is placed, said pan comprising a rod-like frame and a sheet metal plate carried thereby, the pan being concaved in cross section.

4. A device of the character stated comprising a flat base adapted to be set on a bed,

and mechanical connections between the pan adjacent its ends and the base and including means by which either or both ends of the an may be raised and lowered at will, and the pan held at any angle to the base at which it is placed, said base comprising a rod-like frame and a flat sheet metal` plate carried thereby, portions of the plate being removedA to expose portions of the rod as handles, said pan comprising a rod-like frame and a sheet metal plate carried thereby, the pan being concaved in cross section. y

A device of the character stated com-v prising a flat base adapted to be set on a bed, a pan designed to iit the trunk of a patient, and mechanical connections between the pan adjacent its ends and the base and including means by which either or both ends of the pan may be raised and lowered at Will,and the pan held at any angle the base at which it is pla-ced, said raising` and lowering means including a pair of screws with right and left threads, two pairs of nuts on each screw, and links connectlngthe nuts' with the base and pan.

7. A device of the character'stated comp prising a flat base adapted'to be set. on" a bed. a pan designed to fit'the trunk of a A patient, and mechanical connections between the pan adjacent its ends and the base and including means by which either or bothv ends of the pan may be raised and lowered at will, and the pan held at any angle to the base at which it is placed, said base comprising a rod-like frame and a flat sheet metal plate carried thereby, portions of the' plate being removed to expose portions Vof the rod as handles, said pan comprising al rod-like frame and a sheet metal plate carried thereby, the pan being concaved in cross section, portions of the plate of the pan being removed to expose portions of the rodlike frame of the pan as handles, said rais ing and lowering means including'a pair of screws with right and left threads, two pairs of nuts on each screw, and links connecting the nuts with the base and pan.

8. A device of the character stated comprising a flat base adapted to be set on a bed, a pandesigned to tit the trunk of a patient, and mechanical connections between the pan adjacent its ends and the base and including means by which either or both ends of the panmay be raised and lowered at will, and
