Description

H. BUFFINGTON.
CARTRIDGE. N'O,186,4;60, Patented Jan. 23, 1877.
wnursses:
N. PETERS, Pl"!DTO-LITHDGRAPNER WASHINGTONv Dv C UNITED STATES PATENT QFFICE,
HERBERT BUFFINGTON, OF JACKSONVILLE, FLORIDA.
IMPROVEMENT IN CARTRIDGES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 186,460, dated January 23, 1877; application filed November 11, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, HERBERT BUFFINGTON, of Jacksonville, in the county of .Duval and State of Florida, have invented a new and Improved Uartridge, of which the following is a specification The accompanying drawing represents a vertical central section of my improved cartridge.
The'invention will first be described in connection with the drawing, and then pointed out in the claim. e
In the drawing, A represents a metallic cartridgeshell, of the usual shape, and B the center socket, which is similar to the sockets of other shells in use, but preferably rounded 011' at the edge of the central hole of the same, so as to fit the rounded-oft neck of the movable anvil O. The anvil O is made of a tube, ct, that slides in the perforation of the socket B of an enlarged conical head, I), and of a collar or shoulder, 01, at the inner end; The head a fits, by its rounded-off neck-connection with the tube a, tightly on the edge of the central socket-hole, formingthereby and by the base of the head an intimate contact, so as to close up the hole and produce the firm seating of the anvil in the socket. The head I) of the an vil is made in conical shape from the base part, which is of suitable thickness, and has an enlarged funnel-shaped or inverted conical mouth or opening, I), so as to receive all the fire possible on the explosion of the cap. The
tube 1) conveys then the fire to the inner end of the same, and thereby directly to the center of the charge. The collar or shoulder d is riveted or otherwise applied to the inner end of the tube, and prevents the movable anvilfrom dropping out when the cap is removed by a blow of the tool on the inner end. It furnishes, also, a larger and stronger bearing for the tool for driving off the cap after the cartridge is discharged Without wearing-or injuring the wooden tool.
The tube is strong enough to resist all strain in removing the cap without bending or-breaking, so that nickel or brass may be used in place of steel or iron, which are liable to corrosion. The fire from the primer passes directly through the tube to the charge, and not around the outside of the tube, securing thereby the reliable firing ot' the cartridge, and also a more effective combustion of the powder-charge.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent A movable anvil for cartridges, consisting of a tubular main part, conical head, and end collar or shoulder at inner end, substantially as specified.
HERBERT BUFFINGTON.
