This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in igniting devices for cigars and cigarettes.

The primary object of the invention is to 5 provide an igniting device for cigars and cigarettes.

The primary object of the, invention is to provide an igniting device' for cigars and cigarettes that eliminates the use of matches and thereby greatly reduces fire hazard and wherein the ignitin material for the cigar or cigarette is carriediw the end of the cigar or cigarette to be lighted, while the striking surface or material with which the ignition material upon the cigar or cigarette is to be engaged may be carried by the cigar or cigarette to eifect lighting of the cigarette or cigar when removed therefrom, the striking surface or material being then disguised with the cigar or cigarette properly lighted for smoking.

It is a further object of the invention to provide an igniting device for cigars or cigarettes wherein ignition material or substances carried by the end of the cigar'or cigarette to be lighted are adapted to be moved over and in contact with the striking surface or material that may form a part of the closure wrapper of a receptacle, con- 30 tainer or the like, the cigar or cigarette being ignited when removed from the container or receptacle.

With the above and other objects in view' that will become apparent as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel form, combination and arran ement of parts hereinafter more fully descri ed, shown in the accompanying drawin and claimed.

Figure 1 is a perspective view, partly broken away and shown in section of a cigarette container constructed in accordance with the present invention and illustrating ignition material carried by the end of the cigarette to be lighted and a striking surface forming a part of the closure or wrapper of the receptacle;

While it is to be understood that this invention is adapted for application to cigars or cigarettes, the same is herein illustrated as associated with cigarettes and the object of the invention is to effect lighting of the cig-' arette without the use of matches, considerable difficulty being experienced in the lighting of cigarettes by the use of matches, especially in the presence of air current and particularly when driving automobiles, one form of the invention comprising a cigarette container or package 1 having a striking area therein for ignition material carried y one end of the cigarette, while in another form of the invention, the striking surface or material is in the form of a band inclosed on each cigarette to effect lighting of the cigarette when removedtherefrom.

The method and means employed in the ignition of the cigarette is similar to the use of the ordinary safety match wherein it is required that the i nition material carried by the match stick e moved over a special type of striking surface or material to efiect ignition of the match, the cigarete 15 as illustrated in the drawing, being of the usual character, the igniting material carried by the end of the ci arette to be lighted being in the form of a re atively narrow strip 16 surrounding the cigarette wrapper and adhesively or otherwise secured thereto. In the form and use of the invention as illustrated in Figures 1 to 3, the reference numeral 17 desi nates an ordinary paper wrapper receptac e that has a paper liner 18, the u per section of which is provided with a stril ing surface or material 19 at theend of the package or receptacle to be opened and through which oppn end the cigarettes 15 are withdrawn; T e striking material-19 is of acharacter to efiect firing of the ignition material 16 carried by the cigarette and when a cigarette is withdrawn from the package or receptacle 17, the striking surfaces 19 may be'gri ped by the fingers of the user at the outer side of the receptacle to cause frictional contact .between the material 16 and the striking material 19, the cigarette being thereby lighted when withdrawn from the receptacle and eliminating the use of matches. a o

In the form of invention illustrated in Figures 4 and 5, the cigarette 15 is provided with the ignition tip 16 and is enclosed by a band 20 o a length suflicient to permit gripping thereof by the fingers of theuser. As shown in Figure 5, the band 20 has a relatively narrower band 21 secured to the inner face thereof intermediate the ends of a striking substance or material that lies in contact withthe cigarette 15 so that when the band 20 is slidably removed from the cigarette 15, the

striking substance 21 moves over the ignltion material 16 to effect lighting of the cigarette. Another form of the invention is shown in Figures 6 and 7 wherein the cigarette 15 is enclosed by a band 22 having one end thereof flaring outwardly asat 23 to insure easy removal thereof from the cigarette. As shown in Figure 7, the entire inner face of the collar 22 is provided with a strikingsurface or substance 24, the band22'eifectinglighting ofg g g cigarette when'slidably removed therein. .To insure retention of the band upon the cigarettewhile the latter is being removed or withdrawn from a full package or receptacle, the band 27 as shown in Figures 10 and 11 carrying an interior striking surface band 28 has an end tab 27a. thereof adhesively secured to the cigarette, the end tab 27a carrying a row oftearing perforations 29 so, that whenthe ci'garetteand its ignition band are removed from the package or receptacle, the band may be separated upon the tearing line of perforation 29 as illustrated in Figure 11 and the band portion 27 then slidably removed-from the cigarette to effect lighting thereof b passage over ignition tip 16. 1

In a cigarettelighter, igniting means at one end of the cigarette and a striking element slidably associated with the igniting means to effect lighting of the cigarette, said striking element includinga band surrounding the cigarette, and a striking surface secured to the inner face of the band inwardly of opposite ends thereof.
