IMPROVEMENT m LlFTlNG-JACKS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 186,402, dated January 16, 1877; application filed July 5, 1876.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, FRANCIS M. LoTT- RIDGE, of Jonesborough, in the county of vGrrant and State of Indiana, have invented I anew and valuable Improvement in Lifting- Jacks; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification,

and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.

Figure 1 0f the drawings is a representation of a perspective elevation of my device. My invention is a lifting-jack; and consists in the novel construction, arrangement, and

operation of the following peculiar features:

A level, pivoted in the usual manner between twovertical standards, comprising the followin g combination: an elbowed ratchet-bar, suitably attached to the long arm of the lever, and provided with a check-pin near its outer end,

retrorse teeth,and a wire pull-rod, fastened described, and illustrated by the accompanying drawings, in which the same letters designate identical parts of my device in the different figures, respectively.

The letter A represents the sill, upon which the said two vertical standards B firmly rest, between which is hung, by an adjusting pivot pin, a, thelever D. To the said lever is fastened an elbowed ratchet-bar, O, which passes freely and slantingly downward between said standards, and isprovided in its lower surface with ratchet-teeth b, which slide downward over and engage upward with a bolt, 0, passed transversely through the said standards, a little below their middle. Across the end of said ratchet-bar is a transversecheckpin, (1, long enough to project horizontally from its sides, and prevent the said end from being pulled through between the standards. Also, attached at the said elbow of said ratchet-bar is the said pull-rod f, running back along the long arm of the lever D, through a guide-loop g, so as to regulate the backward movement of said ratchet-bar, by setting any particular tooth against theflbolt c, when the Weight has been raised by said lever to any desired height. The letter E represents said angular block resting upon the top of the shorter arm of the lever D, and hinged by its inner end to the lever, as shown. Said block E has a suitable notch, m, at its upper and outer end, as shown, to give greater height to the rise of the short arm of the lever D, and consequently to any weight placed upon it. Near the outer end 'of said block E, or within a suitable notch, n, as shown, is attached a hooked rod, h, or hanger, which extends downward from said block, when the short arm of said lever is entirely down, nearly to the bottom of the sill A, for the purpose of conveniently raising anything lying upon the ground. What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

In a lifting-jack, the combination of the adjustable lever D, the standards B, and the sill A with the elbowed ratchet-bar 0, provided with the retrorse teeth b, the transverse bolt or pawl c, and the pull-rod f, guided by the loop 9, and also with the hinged block E, provided with the notches m and n and the hanger h, substantially as and for the purposes specified.
