This. invention relates to gas stoves of the cabinet type in which a movable cover servingas a table top is used for concealing the burners and a door is used for concealing the manifold and valves so that, when the stove is not in use foncooking purposes, it pfesents the appearance of a cabinet or ta- In stoves of this type, the door in front of the valves must be .kept open during the operation of the stove in order to insure an ample supply of air to the burners and to prevent overheating of the valves. As a safety measure, it is also desirabl to prevent the openin of the'valve concealing door by young 0 ildren towhom gas valves always seem very attractive.
During the operation of any one of the burners, the top cover must also be kept open to prevent smothering ofthe flame and injury to the cover; For this reason, it has been customary for the stove manufacturer to place a printed notice on a conspicuous part of. the stove warning the housewife against the closing of the cover before closing of the gas valves. Such notices like most notices which warn of danger, have sometimes been unheeded with serious results.
The main objects of this invention are to provide a gas stove of the cabinet type'having improved locking mechanism arranged to positively secure the valve concealing door in its closed position until the cover has been opened, thereby insuringthe valve handles against manipulation by young children when the stove is not in use ;;-to provide mechanism of this kind adapted 'to'insure closing of all the valves prior to closing of the top cover; to provide locking mechanism of this kind which is automaticallyioperated by the movements of the cover top and valve concealing door; and to provide improved means for limiting the movement of the door away from the valves.

Inasmuch as this invention is applicable to gas stoves of many different designs, the accompanying drawings illustrate only certain portions of the stove structure.
In the form shown, the stove comprises a frame 1 having the usual burner top 2, cast metal front wall 3, and sheet metal walls 4 and 5. A cover .6 is provided for concealing the burner top and also to serve as a table top when the stove is not used for cooking purposes. -This cover is preferably of the construction disclosed in my co-pending application, Serial No. 486,400, filed October 4, 1930. The rear edge of the cover is connected to the frame by a hinge 7, so as to per mit the cover to be shifted'to vertical position to serve as a splasher plate when the provided with handles 11 which are pivoted on a horizontal axis. These valves are arranged so as to be closed when the handles extend downwardly and to be open when the handles project forwardly.
Located below the burners, is a drip pan 12 which is slidably mounted on a pair of horizontal rails 13, so as to be adapted to be moved through an opening 14 in the front wall of the stove.
Mounted in the opening 14 is a guard or door 15 which is adapted to close said opening for concealing the manifold, valves, and drip pan. This door is hinged to the frame by a pair of screws 16 which arethreaded in lugs 17 mounted on the inner face of the door. The outer ends of the screws 16 are loosely mounted in sockets 18 formed in the frame.
Mounted on the inner face of the guard 15, adjacent the lugs 17, is a pair of studs 19 adapted to abut the rails 13 for securing the door against outward movement beyond the horizontal position shown in Fig. 4. When this door is in its open position it serves as a guard to prevent the body and clothes of the operator from coming in contact with the flames during the operation of the stove.
When any one of the gas valves is open, its handle'll projects forwardly to serve as a stop for resisting the closing of the hinged guard. With this construction, the burners always receive an ample supply of air through the opening 14 during the operation of the stove. This safety feature is fully set fzorth in my aforementioned Patent No. 1,7 73 54.
When the valves are opened only slightly,- the valve handles 11 may not project forwardlyfar enough to resist closing of the guard. For this reason the inner face of the guard is provided with a transversely disposed rib 20 adapted to coact with the valve handles to obstruct closing of the guard.
For the reasons hereinbefore mentioned, it
is desirable to prevent opening of the hinged guard in advance of the opening of the hinged cover and to prevent closing of the hinged cover during the operation of any one of the burners. This is effected by an improved locking mechanism which includes a latch bar '21 and a keeper 22.
In the form shown, the latch bar 21 is disposed horizontally below the drip pan 12 and its forward end is pivotally secured to a lug 23 at the lower edge of the guard 15 so that,-
when the guard is opened outwardly,-the latch bar is shifted rearwardly into locking engagement with the keeper and, when the guard is closed, the latch bar is shifted forwardly away from the keeper.
. In the construction illustrated, the keeper 22 is in the form of a bar which is vertically shiftable in a guideway 24 mounted on the rear wall 5 of the stove. Formed in the keeper, is an aperture 25 adapted to receive the rear end of the latch bar 21 when the keeper is in its lowermost position. The keeper is operatively connected to the lower edge of the hinged cover 6 by a link 26 so that, when the hinged cover is closed, the keeper is raised and, when the hinged cover is opened, the keeper is lowered.
Located adjacent the latch bar 21, is a brace rod 27 which is bolted or otherwise rigidly secured to the front and rear walls of the frame 1.
. When the stove is not used for cooking purposes, the hinged cover and guard are both closed as illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2. While way 24 as shown in Figs. 2, 3 and 4. To open the front guard, it is necessary to first open the top cover. When the cover is opened, as shown in Fig. 3, the aperture 25 of the keeper is located in alinement with the latch bar and the guard 15 may, therefore, be opened, as shown in Fig. 4.
While the hinged guard is open, it is impossible to close the hinged cover, because the rear end of the latch bar secures the keeper against upward movement, as shown in Fig. 4. Inasmuch as the hinged guard is not in its closed position while any one of the gas valves is open, the top cover cannot be closed claims:
I claim as my invention 1. A stove comprising a frame having an opening therein, burner control means accessible through said opening, a burner top on said frame, a cover movably mounted on said frame so as to be shiftable into a horizontal closed position to overlie said burner top, a guard movably mounted on said frame so as to be shiftable into position to close said opening, and means operable by said cover for ositively securing said guard against opemng while said cover is closed.
2. A stove comprising a frame having an opening therein, burner control means accessible through said opening, a burner top on said frame, a cover movably mounted on said frame so as to be shiftableinto a horizontal closed position to overlie said burner top, a guard movably mounted on said frame so 'as to be shiftable into position to close said opening, and means operable by said guard for positively securing said cover against closing while said guard is open.

A stove comprising a frame, a burner, means controlling said burner, said frame having an opening to permit access to said means, a guard movably mounted on said frame so as to be shiftable into and out'of position to close said opening, a handle on said control means arranged to obstruct the closing of said guard when said burner is in closed position to overlie said burner, and
means operable by said guard for positively securing said cover against closing while said guard is open.
4. A stove comprising a frame, a burner, means controlling said burner, said frame having an opening to'permit access to said means, a guard movably mounted on said frame so as to be shiftable into and out of position to closesaid opening, a handle on said control means arranged to obstruct the closing of said guard when said valve is open, a cover movably mounted on said frame so as to be shiftable into horizontal closed position to overlie said burner, and means operable by said cover for positively securing said guard against opening while said cover is closed.
5. A stove comprising a frame, a burner, means controlling said burner, said frame having an opening to permit access, to said means, a guard movably mounted on said frame so as to be shiftable into and out of position to close said opening, a cover movably mounted on said frame so as to be shiftable into horizontal closed position to overlie said burner, and locking meansloperable by said cover and guard and arranged to compel the opening of said cover in advance of the opening of said guard.
6. A stove comprising a frame, a burner, means controlling said burner, said frame having an opening to permit access to said means, a guard movably mounted on said frameso as to be shiftable into and out of posltion to close said opening, a cover mova bly mounted on said frame so as to be shiftable into horizontal closed position to overlie said burner, and locking means operable by said cover and guard and arran ed to compel the closing of said guard in a Vance of the closing of said cover. r
7. A stove comprising a frame, a burner, means controlling said burner, said frame having an opening to permit access to said means, a door hinged on said frame so as to be movable into and out of position to close said opening, a cover hinged on said frame so as to be movable into horizontal closed position to overlie said burner, a vertically shiftable keeper mounted on the back of said frame and provided with an aperture therein, said keeper being connected to said cover so as to be moved thereby, and a latch connected to said door, said latch extending rearwardly for engagement with said aperture when said door is open so as to secure. said cover against closing.

A stove comprising a frame, a burner, means controlling said burner, said frame having an opening to permit access to said means, a door hinged on said frame so as to be movable into and out of position to close V said opening, a cover hinged on said frame so as to be inovable into horizontal closed position to overlie said burner, a vertically shiftable keeper mounted on the back of said frame and provided with an aperture therein, said keeper being connected to said cover so as to be moved thereby, and a latch connected to said door, saidlatch extending rearwardly for engagement with said aperture when said door is open so as to secure said cover against closing, said keeper and latch coacting to secure said door against opening when said cover is closed.

A stove comprising a frame, a burner, means controlling said burner, said frame having an opening to permit access to said means, a door hinged on said frame so as to be movable into and out of position to close said opening, a cover hinged on said frame so asto be movable into horizontal closed position to overlie said burner, a guideway on the back of said frame, a vertically shiftable keeper mounted on said guideway and linked to said cover, and a horizontally movable latch bar hinged to said door, the rear end of said latch bar being adapted to engage said keeper to secure said door against opening 5 while said coveris closed.
