This invention is an improvement in cake safes, and more particularly in a safe designed for portable use.
One of the primary objects of the present invention is the provision of a safe composed of a base and a cover, wherein the base and cover are so constructed that a seal is provided between said-base and cover at their junction.
' Another object is the provision of a safe composed of a base and a cup-shaped cover, wherein the cover is secured to the base by means of bails hingedly connected to the base, and engaging over the cover, one bail having an integral hook, and the other an integral bar for engagement by the hook, and so constructed and arranged that the hook is disengaged from the bar by pressure toward the cover.
Another object is the provision of a hook and bar connection, wherein the bails are resilient, so that when the hook is engaged with the bar, it will be retained by the resiliency of the bails, and when it is released the bails will spring apart of their own resiliency. r
Another object is the provision of a hook and bar connection of the class described, capable of being engaged or released by one hand.
In the drawing forming a part hereof Figure 1 is a perspective view of the im- I proved safe; V
Figure 2 is a vertical section on the line of the grip or handle. g
The improved safe, which is formed of sheet metal or the like, includes a base or bottom,a cover or body, and a plurality of bails hingedly connected to the base, and constructed and adapted to be clasped over the body or cover, to clamp it to the base, and to provide a grip or handle for enabling the safe to be carried in the hand.
The base, indicated generally at A, is formed from a. disk 1, having its edge reinforced by beading 2, and the base is provided with an annular groove 3 of considerable depth near its margin. The arrangement of the groove provides for what is in efiect, an upwardly offset plane area 1, upon which the cake is adapted to rest, and the groove en circles the area. The groove is formed by bending the material into shape, and as shown, the bottom of the groove is the part upon which the bottom portion of the safe rests, the bead 2 being raised slightly above the bottom of the groove. The body or cover, indicated generally at 13, includes a diskshape top portion 4, and a cylindrical body portion or side-wall 5, which is seamed to the edge of the top portion, as shown at 6. The top portion 4 is also provided with a knob 7 at its center, for convenience in handling the cover.
The lower edge of the side-wall is reinforced by beading, as shown at 8, and thediameter of the cylindrical side-wall 5 is such that it will fit closely against the outer .wall
of the groove 3, when the beaded edge is The side-wall is dropped into the groove. provided with an annular bead 9, so positioned that when the bead 8 is in the bottom of the groove 3, the head 9 will rest upon the upper edge of the outer wall of the groove and the portion of the bottom outside of the groove. The engagement between the sidewall 5 below the bead 9, and the outer wall of the groove 3, is close enough to prevent the entrance of foreign matter, or insects, and the bead assists in sealing the junction between the cover and the bottom.
The bails indicated generally at G and D, are roughly yoke or U-shaped, each comprising a body portion 10 and arms 11. Each of the arms has at the end remote from the body, a hook or open eye 12, which is, adapted to engage an opening 13, in the bottom, and outside of the groove 3. The opening is in fact arranged at or very near the bead 2, and the hooks are engaged so that the bills of the hooks are outside of the bead.
The body portion 10 of the bail C has an offset portion 14, oiiset from the body when the bail is in the position of Figure 1, and this oifset portion 14 provides a bar for engage- I ment by thehook of the grip, to be later described. The arms'll of both bails are of angular form, each consisting of a part of a length to extend from the engagement with the bottom tothe top' portion of the cover, and
a portion lying on the cover when the bails are connected.
The body-portion 10 of the bail D has an upwardly and laterally offset hook or clasp 15, which is adapted to engage the bar 14 of the bail G. This hook or clasp is formed by bending the material of the body interme diate the arms, first upwardly, as shows at 16,
then in a plane parallel to the planeof the,
top P rt on f the o as shown a Fr u thence downwardly and again upwardly to form the hook 15. The parts 17 lie parallel with each other in spaced relation, and they are preferably connected by a strip. 18 of sheet material, which has its side edges bent or the bail 0,50 that-whenthe hook is released from the bar 14, the hook is sprung upwardly and away from the bar. The hook may be easily released from the bar by downward pressure on the strip 18, which is the top of the grip or handle, as indicated indotted lines in Figure 2.
In use, to place a cake in'thesafe, the hook 15 is disengaged from the bar and the bails are swung outwardly away from the cover, which is then removed bymeans of the knob 7. The cake is placed upon the'area 1 of the bottom, andthe'cover is' placed as shown in Figure 2, with the bead B in the groove" 3.
- The bails are now swung upwardlyand with onehand the hook may be connected with'the bar 14 merely by'depressing the hook{ and swinging the bar 14 over the hook. The parts may be disengaged in the same manner, that is, with one hand, by depressing the grip or handle. When it is so depressed, the, bar l4 springs away from thegrip or handle through its own resiliency. r
It will be apparent from the drawin that the groove 3 provides an annular le gexor shoulder, with a plane area inside the ledge or shoulder for supporting the cake. :The ledge or shoulder co-operates with the side.- wall of the cover to provide a'seal between the bottom and the body. Obviouslythe base and cover may be employed together, either with or without the bail and handle arrangement illustrated and described.
