Generally, it is desirable to-have the partitions forming the bins removably secured together so that the size of 2 the bins may be varied at will to accommodate different merchandise which requires different sized bin-s or to vary the quantity of merchandise in proportion to the rapidity with which it is dispensed. Commonly, the partitions are formed of transparent material, such, e. g., as glass, so that the merchandise may be seen through the partitions.
In my copending application Serial No. 414,875, filed December 18, 1929, for fasteners,
1 I have shown one means for releasably securing such partitions together. By the invention disclosed in that application, 1 pro vide a fastener for securing such partitions together which comprises two flanges at an angle to each other. The flanges are adapted to extend in a vertical direction along the side of the partition. At corresponding ends the flanges are reversely bent to form a hook-shaped section which clamps over the edge of the partition and serves to hold the flanges to the partition. The two flanges of a fastener engage adjacent intersecting partitions, the angle between the flanges being equal to the angle formed by'the intersecting partitions which are to be secured together.
In accordance with this invention, I provide a base for the partitions. The base comprises a channel-shaped member adapted to receive the edge of a partition between the Such bins sides thereof. The sides of the channelshaped member may be drawn toward each other to firmly clamp the edge of the partition therebetween. The base members con-v taining partitions may be secured together to form bins, scuring means being provided for this purpose. I
An advantage of the partition base of my invention is the fact that it is comparatively inexpensive to manufacture.
Another advantage of the partition base of my invention is the fact that it is easily and readily removed and replaced.
A further advantage is that the partitions which constitute a bin may be positively locked together.
Specifically, the partition base of my invention comprises a channel-shaped member which is adapted to receive the edge-of a partition between the sides thereof. Opposed strips are formed in the sides of the channelshaped member at spaced intervals, the strips being integral with the sides of the channelshaped member at each end and being bent to extend into the channel. The upper edges of these strips form a rest for the edge of a partition. One of each pair of strips is provided with an opening through which a bolt may pass, the other strip of the pair being provided with a threaded opening which is adapted to engage the threads on the bolt. By means of these bolts, the sides of the channel-shaped members may be drawn toward each other to securethe partitions therebetween. Some of these channel-shaped mem- 85 bers have a metal plate on one end thereof. The upper edge of the metal plate is reversely bent to form a hook which is adapted to engage one side of a similar channel-shaped member which extends at an angle thereto. 0
Connecting strips having flanges extending at an angle to each other are provided for securing the base members'together at the corners of the bins. Corresponding edges of the flanges constituting these metal strips 95 are reversely bent to form hooks which are adapted to engage and secure together the sides of adjacent base members.

In Figs. 1 to 12 there is shown one form of partition base of my invention. This form is used only near the edges of the partitions. The base member comprises a channel-shaped member which is formed from a single piece of sheet metal. This channel-shaped member is adapted to receive between the sides 1 and 2 thereof, partitions 3, which partitions may be of some transparent material such, for instance, as glass. At spaced intervals, parallel slotsi are cut in the sides of the channelshaped member. By cutting these slots in the sides of the channel-shaped members,
strips 5 are formed, the ends of the strips be ing integral with the sides of the channel. The strips are formed in the sides of the channels in pairs, each pair constituting two opposed strips, one in each side of the channel member. The strips are bent inwardly so that they extend into the channel and the upper edges thereof form rests against which the edge of a partition abuts. One of the strips of each pair is provided with an opening that is internally threaded to receive the threads of a bolt 6, the other strip of each pair having an opening therethrougn through which the bolt may pass. The bolts 6 extending between these metal strips are provided so that the sides of the channel-shaped member may be drawn towards each other to firmly clamp the partition 3 therebetween. The web 7 of the channel-shaped members is cut away between each pair of strips so that the sides of the channel are more pliable and may be more readily drawn together to clamp the partition therebetween, the web of the channel being maintained at each pair of strips to strengthen the base member at these points. To improve the appearance of the outer partition of bins formed with these base members, metal strips 8 may be provided which extend between the base members on the ends of the partition, one side of the end of the. base member being offset as shown at 9 to receive the end of the metal strips 8.
Adjacent partitions 3 which intersect at an angle, may be secured together as shown in Fig. 2. In this figure, adjacent partitions which intersect at an angle and form the corner of a bin, are secured together by a metal strip. The metal strip is bent to form two flanges 10 and 11 meeting at an angle to each other, the angle corresponding to the angleformed by the partitions. The upper edge of each of these flanges is reversely bent to form hooks 12 which are adapted to fit over the edges of the sides of ad acent base members, the ends of the base members being offset as shown at 13 to receive these reversely bent portions. As shown in Figs. 3 and 4, these connecting strips may be applied to the outer sides of the channel-shaped base members as well as to the inner side.
In Fig. 5, there is shown a modified way of connecting adjacent base members together. In this figure, one of the side members of one of the base members is extended and bent at an-angle; the angle between this extended portion 14 and the side of the base member corresponds to the angle between the adjacent partitions. This extended portion 1 L In Fig. 6, there is shown another way in which adjacent partitions forming the corner of a bin may be secured together. As shown in this figure, corner base members may be formed and the partitions inserted therein, the base members having two integral portions extending at an angle to each other.
In Figs. 7 to 12 I have shown a modified form of the partition base which is particularly suitable for a partition which extends at right angles to another partition intermediate the ends of that other partition. In Figs. 7, 8 and 9, the base member is shown with an end plate 17. This end plate is integral with the web of the channel constituting the base member and is bent so as to contact with the ends of the sides 1 and 2 of the channels. Near the upper edge of the sides of the channel, integral lips 18 are provided at right angles to the sides of the channel. Tongues 19 pressed out of the plate 17 engage these lips and serve to strengthen the plate and maintain the plate in contact with the ends of the sides 1 and 2 of the channel. The upper edge of the plate is reversely bent to form a hook 20 which is adapted to hook over one side of a base member secured to the partition which extends at right angles to the intermediate partition for which this base member is designed.
A modified form of corner member for connecting adjacent base members together is shown in Figs. 13 and 14. This modified form of connecting member is similar to that shown in Figs. 2 to 4 but differs therefrom in that less metal is used in its construction. In this connecting member the flanges 21 and 22 are reversely bent forming substantially U-shaped members in cross section. These U-shaped members are placed over the edges of adjacent base members, the sides of the base members extending between the sides of the U-shaped flanges.
Figs. 15 and 16 illustrate the use of continuous base members, i. e., the base members on the partitions constituting the outer partitions of the bins, are continuous from end to end of the partitions. The use of continuous partition bases improves, somewhat, the appearance of the bins in that a continuous uninterrupted border is provided along the lower edge of the partition.
In Fig. 17, there is shown a modified form of connecting member for connecting adjacent base members together. This connecting member also serves to secure the partitions to the sales counter and for this reason it is provided with a fiat portion 23 which extends along the sales counter 24 and a pocket 25 which is adapted to receive the corner of the sales counter 24. Like all the other members herein described, this connecting member is constructed from a single piece of sheet metal and has hook-like portions at the upper edge of the flanges 26 and 27 which engage the sides of adjacent base members;- This connecting member is, of course, se-' cured to the outer side of the base members as clearly shown in Fig. 16.
Fig. 18 shows a modified form of the connecting member shown, Fig. 17. In the connecting member shown, one flange 28 is provided with an extended portion 29 at right angles to the lower edge of the flange which is adapted to contact with the sales counter. This extended portion 29 is provided with an opening 30 which is adapted to receive a screw or nail to fasten the flange" to the sales counter.
Fig. 19 illustrates the use of packing members 31 to separate the metallic sides of the base members from the sides of the glass partitions. These packing members 31 extend longitudinally of the base members and are secured to the sides thereof and serve to increase the frictional contact between the sides of the base member and the sides of the glass partition.
From the above description of the modifications of the partition base member shown in the drawings it will be apparent that the base members of my invention may be readily and quickly removed and replaced and that the size of the bins formed by the partitions which are secured together by these base members may be varied at will without the aid of a skilled mechanic.
It is obvious that various other modifications may be made in the base member of my invention, other than those shown in the drawings and described immediately above, by those skilled in the art within the prin-' ciple and scope of my invention as expressed in the appended claims. I
I claim:
1. A base for partitions which are used to form bins in which articles may be displayed comprising a channel-shaped member adapted to receive the edge of a partition between the sides thereof, opposed, strips formed in the sides of the channel-shaped member, the strips extending into the channel and forming a rest for the edge of a partition, and means extending between said strips for securing the edge of a partition between the I sides of the channel-shaped member.
2. A base for partitions which are used to form bins in which articles may be displayed comprising a channel-shaped member adapted to receive the edge of a partition between i the sides thereof, opposed strips formed in the sides of the channel-shaped member at spaced intervals, the strips being integral with the sides of the channel-shaped member at each end and being bent to extend into the channel to form a rest for the edge of the partition, and a screw extending between each pair of said strips and engaging a threaded opening in one of the strips of a pair, said screws being adapted to draw the sides of the channel-shaped members together to secure the partition therebetween. 3. A base for partitions which are used to v form bins in which articles may be displayed comprising a channel-shaped member adapted to receive the edge of a partition between the sides thereof, opposed strips formed in the sides of the channel-shaped member at spaced intervals, the strips being integral 1 1 with the sides of the channel-shaped member at each end and being bent to extend into the channel to form a rest for the edge of the partition, a screw extending between each pair of said strips and engaging a threaded open- 5 ing in one of the strips of a pair, said screws being adapted to draw the sides of the channel-shaped members together to secure the partition therebetween, and means including a metal plate reversely bent at one edge thereof and adapted to hook over the edge of the side of a channel-shaped member for securing the channel-shaped members together to form bins.

A base for partitions which are used to form bins in which articles may be displayed comprising a channel-shaped member constructed from a single piece of sheet metal and adapted to receive the edge of a partition between the sides thereof, opposed strips 8. formed in the sides of the channel-shaped member at spaced intervals, the strips being integral with the sides of the channel-shaped member at each end and being bent to extend into the channel to form a rest for the edge 35 of the partition, means extending between opposed strips for drawing the sides of the channel-shaped member together to secure the partition therebetween, and a plate on the end of said channel-shaped member having the upper edge thereof reversely bent and adapted to engage one side of another channel-shaped member to form bins.
5. In combination, bases for partitions which are used to form bins in which articles may be displayed comprising a channelshaped member adapted to receive the edge of a partition between the sides thereof, and means including a metal strip having two flanges at an angle to each other, corresponding edges of the flanges being reversely bent to form a hook, each flange being adapted to engage the side of a charmed-shaped member to form bins, and means for securing said metal strip to a counter.
