The present invention relates to a roll polisher for sheet, tin and jobbing mills and has for its prime object toprovide means for keeping the rolls free from grime and to polish the rolls in an automatic manner doing I away with the necessity of stopping the machinery and hand polishing the rolls as is now the common practice.
Another very important object of the invention resides in the provision of an apparatus of this nature which is simple in its construction, strong and durable, thoroughly eflicient and reliable in use and operation, and otherwise well adapted to the purpose VWith the above and numerous other objects in view as will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in certain novel features of construction, and in the combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.

In Figure l we have illustrated in dotted lines a roller 5 diagonally of which normally extends a channel holder 6 with a polisher bar 7 slidable therein and having burnishing elements 8 embedded therein as clearly illustrated in Figure 12. v
The bottom central portion of the holder 6 is formed with a slot 9. A plate 10 extends. longitudinally of the central portion of the bar 7 and has lugs 11 extending up into recesses in said bar 7. A U-shaped element 12 depends from the center of the plate 10 through the slot 9. A connecting rod 14 is engaged with the member 12 for reciprocating forth in the channel holder 6.
The connecting rod 14 is engaged with an off center pin 16 on a wheel 17 attached to a.
ratchet wheel 18. These wheels 17 and 18 are r journalled on a shaft 19 carried by a frame structure 20. An arm 20 is rocka-ble on the shaft 19 and has a pawl 21 engageable with the ratchet wheel 18. A link 22 is engaged 8 with the arm 20 I and extends upwardly therefrom being adjustably engaged with a rocker 23 pivotally connected at one end as at 24 with the frame structure 20 and having a tooth 25 at the other end thereof riding on the periphery of a notched rotor 26 which is operated by some part of the rolling machinery.
Therefore as this rotor 26 rotates it will cause the rocking of the rocker 23 by allowing the tooth 25 to drop down in its notches and then to force the tooth therefrom. This causes the rocking of the arm 20 which imparts intermittent rotary motion to the wheels 18 and 19 thereby causing the movement of the connecting rod 14 to reciprocate the bar 7 The holder 6 has sockets 29 to receive balls 30 on the ends of arms 31 which project laterally from ends of rocker blocks 32, arranged one adjacent each end of the roller and rockable on an axis at substantially right angles to the axis of the roller. Each rocker block has an arcuate edge 33 with a groove 34 therein. A slide'block 35 is mounted in a frame 36 being adjustable by means of a screw 37. An arcuate edge 38 on the slide 35 has a rib 39 to be received in the groove 34. Links 40 are pivotally engaged with the ends of the block 32 and are pivotally engaged with levers 41 pivotally mounted intermediate their ends on projections 42 from the frame 36. 'A spring 44 is connected-between the ends of the levers 41 and may be tensioned by suitable adjusting means 45 tending to rock the upper lever 41 so as to push on the upper link 41 and to rock the lower lever 41 so as to pull on its lower link 40.
Thus it will be seen that the block 32 may be rocked in respect to the blocks 35 as may be required to position the holder 6 parallel to the axis of the roller 5. It will be also noted that the burnishing elements areyieldably engaged with the roller to compensate for irregularities or roughness of the roller periphery.
It will be noted that the arm 31 of one @block 32 is located at the bottom end thereof l and from which position the holder 6 may be swung to a position parallel to the axis of the roller during the burnishing operation.
It will be seen that the burnishing elements are constantly in engagement with the rolls thereby keeping them polished and smoothing'out any roughness which may be occasioned thereon as happens in-actual operation because of the intense heat used in rolling the sheets, etc. Thus this apparatus does away with the necessity of hand polishing which requires the stopping of the machine.
v It is thought that the construction, utility l and advantages of this invention will now be quite apparent to those skilled in this art without a more detailed description thereof.
The present embodiment of the invention has been disclosed in considerable detail merely for the purposes of exemplification since in actual practice it attains the features of advantage enumerated as desirable in the statement of the invention and the above description.
It will be apparent that changes in the details of construction, and in the combination and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention as hereinafter claimed or sacrificing any of its advantages.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new is:
1. In an apparatus of the class described, a pair of frames, a pair of slides mounted in the frames, means for adjusting the slides, said slides having arcuate edges, a pair of blocks having arcuate edges, tongue and groove connections between the edges, arms extending from opposite ends of the blocks, a holder, ball and socket connections between the holder and the arms, links connected with the ends of the blocks, levers rockable on the frames and connected with the links, and springs between the levers. v 2; In an, apparatus of the class described, a pair of frames, a pair of slides'mounted in the frames, means for adjusting the slides,

and meansfor reciprocating the bar.
. 3. In an apparatus of the class described, a pair of frames, a pair-of slides mounted in the frames, means for adjusting the slides, said slides having arcuate edges, a pair of'blocks having arcuate edges, tongue and grooveconnections between the edges, arms extendmg from opposite ends of the blocks, a.-holder,
ball and socket connections between the holder and the arms, links connected with the ends of the blocks, levers rockable on the frames and connected with the links, and springs between the levers, a polishing'bar having polishing elements, said bar being slidable in theholder longitudinally thereof, a plate on" the central portion of the bar having a'member projecting therefrom through a slot in the holder, a connectingrod engaged with said member, and means for reciprocating the connecting rod.
4. In an apparatus of'the class described, a pair of frames, a pair of slides mountedin the frames, means for adjusting the slides,
said slides having arcuate edges, a pair of blocks having arcuate edges, tongue and groove connections between the edges, arms extending from opposite ends of the blocks, a holder, ball and socket connections between he holder and the arms, links connected with the ends of the blocks, levers rockable on the framesand connected with the links, and springs-between the levers, a polishin bar having polishing elements, said bar eing slidable in the holder longitudinally thereof,
a plate on the central portion of the bar hav- CPI ing a member projecting therefrom through a slot in the holder, a connecting rod engaged with said member, a wheel, sald connectlng rod being eccentrically engaged therewith, a ratchet wheel, a shaft on which said Wheels are mounted, a support for said shaft, an
arm rockable on said shaft, a link connected with the last mentioned arm, a pawl in the last mentioned arm engageable with the ratchet wheel, a rocker with which the last mentioned link is engageable and means for operating the rocker.
5. In a roller polisher, a pair of rockably mounted members, a holder connecting said members and movable relative to the members upon rocking movement of the members, means operatively engaged with said rockable members for supporting said holder parallel to the axis of the roller to be polished, a polishing bar slidable in the holder and provided with burnishing elements for contact with the roller, and eccentric drive means operatively connected with the bar for reciprocating the latter.
