HAT Form 'Filed March 19, 19:50
v lPatented June 14, 1932 FRANK PERTOT, F BROOKLYN, NEW YORK HAT FORM Application led March 19, 1930. Serial No. 437,091.
This invention is directed to an improvement in hat forms of that type used in shaping machines, wherein the hat is given the final general shape.
Hat forms of this type, as hereinbefore provided have been constructed of rubber having a general hat shape,
' and brim, and the hat is brought to final general shape over this form. Owing to a 10 marked tendency of the hat material to stick to the rubber surface of the form, when directly applied thereto, it has been heretofore necessary to apply a covering for the form, over which covering the hat is formed. These coverings, usually of silk, not only reduce the output of a particular machine but add to the expense of the operation, for the time required in applying and adjusting the covering, to say nothing of the expense of the covering itself, which requires frequent renewal,
are material factors in reduced output and increased expense. i
The primary object of the present invention is the permanent application to the eXte- 5 rior of a rubber or like hat form of a canvas or duck covering, which by reason of its permanent application becomes an integral part of the hat form, and provides the very material advantage of absorbing any moisture in or passing through the hat material and prevents adherence between the hat material and 1 the rubber of the form. Y
A further object of the invention is the application of the permanent covering of canvas or duck in a manner to avoid any seam formation, so that the exterior of the form is completely smooth. This avoids the objection of the necessary seam in the removable covering referred to, and also avoids the marring of the interior of the hat by such seam.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which :l
Fig. 1 is a perspective View of the improved hat form. i
Fig. 2 is a side elevation, partly in vertical section, of the same.
Thehat form is as usual constructed of rubber formed as an integral unit, and comprising the crown portion 1 and the brim portion 2. Heretofore this unit, when in use 1n that is including a crown v the shaping TES PATENT OFFICE machine has been covered by a separate and removable covering of silk,

Thus the coverfing of silk referred to sary, and of course thi carefully placed on the tion, and is sub'ected to quire frequent renewal.
is considered necess covering must be form at each operasuch wear as to re- In carrying the present invention into effect, the hat form, throughout the exterior of the crown portion and a layer of canvas or This layer of canvas or brim is covered with duck, as indicated at 3.. duck is permanently secured to the rubber surface of the form,

coverng permanent- The fixed covering is permanent and does not have to be applied at each sary to renew it. The completely find its way operation, nor is it necesfixed covering will absorb all moisture which may through the hat material, and
from the nature of the material of the permanent covering, there is no possibility of the hat material sticking to the form.
The use of the form resulting from this invention tends to an increased production, as
the time ordinarily consumed in applying and removing the silk loose form covering may be directed to the hat shaping, for the covering of the present Furthermore, as canvas form is permanent. or duck is used `for the permanent covering, and silk or other thin material was required for the loose covering, there is a materially increased life in the permanent covering. covering has to be shape Again, as the loose d to fit over the rubber form, the use of seams cannot be avoided, and such seams tend to mar the interior of the hat in shaping. With the permanent covering the canvas or vduck is entirely free of seams or projections, and the possiblllty of marring the hat from such cause entirely avoided. The removable covering is capable of only limited use with the form, experience showing that a dozen of such forms are ordinarily required in each days use of the machine. These forms thus constitute an item of more or less expense, While the permanent covering by being permanent in place and of a material which could not be used for the f removable covering, have a materially greater life, and'thus the overhead incident to this item is materially reduced in favor of the permanent covering.
It is 'highly important that the coating ap- I plied to the rubber form throughout the crown portion be smooth andwithout ridgesn or seamsk and, therefore, itis-preferred thatl this covering be of canvas. The covering throughout the brim portion of the form may,
and preferably is, of a material which has a- 4greater absorbing quality than that of'canvas as, for example, felt, indicated vaty 4. The' felt is, of course, more absorbing than the canvas and is also Somewhat more rough', but this is not a disadvantage at the particular place at which the felt is applied. vFurthermore, feltcan be more easily fitted to the form than can canvas.
Having thus described the' invention, what is claimed as new, is
1. A hat form for shaping machines constructed of rubber, and a covering'of canvas permanently secured to the exterior shaping surface of such form. j
2.V A hat` fornr of rubber,A canvas throughout the crown portion' of such form, and a covering of felt brim ortion of such form. l
3. 'hatform for shaping machines constructed of'substantially resilient material, a permanentl i applied surface covering of a` material in erent-ly moisture-absorbent, and
adhesive means for securing the surface covering material in place, said surface covering means being resistive to the complete pene tration of the adhesive means. a x
