This invention relates to improvements inV `grinding machinery and has particular reference to the control mechanism therefor.

Another object of the present invention is the provision of a control mechanism by which the movements of both table and'work may be simultaneously controlled or thev actuation of one of said parts adjusted without disturbance of the other.
Other objects and advantages of the presv ent invention should be readily apparent by reference to the following specification taken in conjunction with vthe accompanying drawing, and it will beunderstood that any modifica-tions may be made within the scope of the appended claims, without departing from or exceeding the spirit of the invention.

In the drawing the numeral 10 designates the bed of a conventional type grinderha-ving mounted thereon the bearings 11 for the grinding wheel 12 and the reciprocable table 13 with a footstock 14 for engagement with one end of the work piece 15 and with a headstock 16. The table further bears a suitable motor 17 coupled with the headstock for actuation thereof. `The table may be shifted on the bed in any suitable manner as for eX- ample through the use 'ofv a feed screw 18l rotatable by `a gear 19 which may be coupled for the work; Said table 13 is provided i 1927. . To control the movement of the table there is pivoted to bed 10 the table control lever 21 carried by the rock shaft 22. This shaft has secured thereon the shifter arm 23 for actuation of clutch 2() and has an additional arm 24 to which is pivoted link 25. This link at its lower end has an elongated slot 26 receiving pin 27 on shifter arm 28. Shifter arm 28 is in turn carried by rock shaft 29 which supports the treadle 30 having the pedal portions 31 and 32 at opposite sides l.of the shaft, whereby the treadle may be selectively rocked in either direction as desired. Coupled with this treadle as by attachment to shaft 29 is the switch actuating plate 33 for selective engagement with switch plunger 34 or 35.
These plungers serve to actuate in opposite directions the switch blade control 33 as will be readily understood by reference to Figure 2.. When the plunger 34C is raised as shown in this figure the control circuit 37 for solenoid 38 is closed. This in turn acts on switch 39 of line circuit 40 for motor 17 causing actuation of the motor which therefore starts the work rotation. On the other hand, when the pedal 31 is depressed raising plunger this swings switch member 36 to open the control circuit and deenergiz'e the solenoid. In this event spring 41 opens motor line switch 39 stopping the motor and thus discontinuing rotation of the work. p
The advantageous operation of the present structure should be readily apparent by reference to the several illustrations'of pothe like, the control lever 21 and treadle 3Q;
are in the position shown in Figure 1, in which event` the clutch 20 is disengaged so that there is no feed of the table and line 40 is open so that there is no rotation of the work. Pin 27 then occupies an intermediate position in slot 26, the treadle also being in an intermediate or non-tilted position. As lever 21 is shifted to the left or starting position the end of slot 26 will engage with pin 27 rocking the treadle into the position indicated in Figure 3. Consequently, both the table clutch or actuating mechanism will be rendered operative and also the power line for the headstock motor energized. Thus the single motion ofthe lever 21 toward the left or starting position serves to initiate movement of both the table and the headstock. Subsequently, if it is desired to stop the movement of the table without interfering with movement of the work this may be edected by swinging handle 21 to the right or stopped position. However, if it is desired to stop the entire machine treadle 30 is rocked by pressure on pedal 31 shifting plunger 35 to break the circuit controlled by switch member 36 deenergizing the headstock motor and at the same time disengaging clutch 20.
These operations all enter into the control of the machine when used for ordinary or traverse grinding.
In addition, when the machine is utilized for what is known as plunge cut grinding in which the table movement is not utilized, the lever 21 may be left in its right hand position and the starting and stoppingl of the work controlled solely by pressure on pedal parts 31 and 82 respectively, pin 27 in this instance riding idly in slot 26 which is of sufficient length to permit the desired movement without shifting of the lever 21.
I claim n 1. A grinding machine, including a bed, a table member movable on the bed, a rotary work driving member, power means for shifting the table, a motor for driving the work driving member, a control lever for the table power means, a control switch for the motor, and connections between the lever and switch whereby the switch may be actuated jointly with or independently of the movement of the lever.
2. A grinding machine or the like, including a bed, a table movable on the bed, a rotatable work driving member, power actuable means for shifting the table, additional means for rotating' the work driving member, a control lever for one of said means, a control pedal for the other of said means, and a connection between said lever and said pedal having a lost motion provision whereby the parts may be given certain jointly actuated control movements and certain independent contro-l movements.

In a. grinding machine or the like, the combination with a bed, of a table movable on the bed, an oscillatable control lever for said table movement, a rotatable work engaging device, electrical means for rotating the device, a control switch therefor, a pedal for operating the switch, and a linkage connection between the lever and pedal, including a. lost motion coupling whereby the lever may be moved into stopping position without effecting the switch.

A machine of the nature disclosed, including a bed, a table movable upon the bed, a drier for the table, a rotatable work engaging device, means for rotating said device, an oscillatable control lever for starting and stopping the table movement, a second shiftable member for controlling the rotation of the work engaging member, and a slotted link connection between said control devices whereby movement of the lever in one direction will operate both the table and work" drive mechanisms and movement in the opposite direction will disconnect the table drive without effecting the work drive.

nection and disconnection of the drive with the table; and a connection having a lost motion provision between the pedal and manual control permitting independent trol is in stopped position, said connection including interengaging portions rendered operative by movement of the manual control into starting position, whereby the motor will be simultaneously actuated and stopi' ping movement of the pedal will correspondingly actuate the manual table control device.

A grinding machine of the character described, including a bed, a table mounted' for reciprocation on the bed, a feed screw for actuation of the table, a drive gear loosely mounted on the screw, clutch means for operatively connecting the gear and screw for actuation of the latter, a head stock carriedl by the table, a drive motor carried by the table for actuation of the head stock, a shift lever coupled with the clutch to control the drive or stopping of the feed screw and thus the table movement, an oscillatable :switchr controlling member for regulating the starting and stopping of the motor, a rock arm associated with the switch, a second rock arm associated with the clutch lever and a link intermediate the rock arms having pivotal' and a pin in the other of the parts, moveable p in the slot, whereby movement of the leverf actuation of the pedal when the manual con-^ 00 Cil
