. ME'ATMANGL'ER.
No. 185,981. Patented Jan. 2,1877.
UNITED STATES PATENT QFFIGE.
DANIEL STEEPLES, WILLIAM A. SMITH, DANIEL BOLES, AND DAVID F. STAMBAUGH, OF CASEY, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN MEAT-MANGLERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 185,981, dated January 2, 1877 application led November 16, 1876.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, DANL. STEEPLES, WILLIAM A. SMITH, DANI.. BoLEs, and DAVID F. STAMBAUGE, of Casey, in the county of Clark, and in the State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Meat-Manglers; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, ret'erence being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters ot' reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
The nature of our invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a machine for mangling beefsteak, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which our'invention appertains to make and use the same, we will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure lis a side elevation, partly in section, of our invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the same, and Fig. 3 is an end view thereof.
A A represent the bed-frame of our inachine, consisting of two side pieces, made higher in the center and tapering toward both ends, and connected by a platform, B, extending` from near the center to one end of the frame, and Hush with the upper edge thereof. This platform forms the feeding-platform of the inangler. In the center, between the two side pieces A A, is placed a roller, C, the journals of which rest in slots in the said side pieces. This roller is grooved both longitudinally and circumferentially, as shown, so as to form tapering projections a a. At the feed end of the machine is hinged another frame, composed of two side pieces, D D, connected by a plate, E, at the top, in the center. The pieces D D are shaped to correspond with and fit on the side pieces A A, and they are hinged thereto by means of pivoted links b b. In the center of the side pieces D D is placed another roller, G, the journals of which are located in slots in said side pieces. This roller is constructed precisely in the same manner as the lower roller C, and the rollers are so arranged that in operation the'grooves of the two rollers will not come opposite each other. On one side of the machine the journals of the two rollers are extended beyond the side pieces, and provided with deep pinions or cog-wheels H H, that mesh into each other. The journal ot' the lower roller C is, in addition thereto, provided with a crank, I, for operating the machine.
At the discharge end of the machine each side piece A is provided with a notched bar or rack-bar, J, fastened in a mortise thereon, and this rack-bar passes up through a mortise or slot in the side piece D, upon which is pivoted a latch, d, that takes into said rackbar, and locks the top frame to the bed-frame. By this means the top frame can be raised or lowered, as desired, to adjust the top roller G with relation to the bottom roller G.
The beetsteak is passed over the platform B, in between the rollers O G, and these being revolved by means of the crank I, the beef is mashed or mangled as it is carried through between the rollers, and drops down in a pan or other receptacle on which the machine is placed.
Having thus fully described our invention, what We claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. In combination with the bottom frame A B, provided with mangling-roller C, the top frame D E, hinged at one end to the bottom frame, provided with the mangling-roller G, aild adjustably held at the other end to the lower frame, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
2. The curved rack-bar J and pivoted latches d, in combination with the frames A B and `D E and the mangling-rollers C G, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing we have hereunto set our hands this 28th day of October, 1876.
DAN L. STEEPLES.
WM. A. SMITH.
DANIEL BOLES.
DAVID F. STAMBAUGH.
