The slug lever is shown at 21. It is piv oted at its lower end upon a shaft 22secured at 23 to the frame of the machine. It is adapted to be swung laterally topush the slug of type awayfrom the ejection opening. A hand 23 at the upper end is provided to contact with the slugs of type and move them away from the opening. This arm is moved laterally to move said slugs by means of a. roller 24 adapted to contact with the cam face 18 upon the slug lever operating rod. Said roller 24 is mounted rotatably upon a pin 25, which is adapted to be inserted through a slot 26 in an arm 27 and secured in position by a clamping nut 28. It will be seen that the roller may be adjusted to different positions in the slot 26 to allow. for different lengths of movement of the slug lever.
The arm 27 is secured at its lower end upon the slug lever and midway of its length is se cured at 30 to an arm 31 on said lever. The arm 31 is ordinarily upon the arm 21 and serves as a contactmember for the push rod which ordinarily works the slug lever. It serves in my improvement as a support for the arm 27, which supports the roller 24. I also provide a stop pin 32 projecting laterally from the arm 27 to limit the inward movement of the slug lever. This pin is adapted to cont-act with the frame of the machine and is adjustable to allow the movement of the slug lever tothe desired point.
In the operation of this device the cam mechanism, which ordinarily operates the ejector lever 4, will,.in its movement, throw the ejector lever forward so as to push the operating rod forwardly, moving the cam face 18' of the rod against the roller 24 and moving the slug lever laterally to allow the ejection of the slug of type. The lever 4'is then moved in an opposite direction and the withdrawal of the operating rod 9 allows the slug lever to move inwardly andengage the slug and move it away from the ejection orifice. This movement of the slug lever is accomplished through a spring engaging with the hook 23 upon the slug lever in the usual manner; 'No change is made in the construction of the means for moving the slug levertoward the slug;
The advantages of this construction over the previous means for operating the slug lever lie in the fact that the operation thereof is removed from any connection with the justification rod. The old means of operating the slug lever was liable to stick and interfere materially with the ejector mechanism and the justification rod. As my, device is connected simply with the ejection lever in the manner stated, no interference whatever withthe other operating parts of the machine is experienced. Furthermore, with my improvement the degree of movement of the slug lever may easily be varied by adjusting the cam roller 24 in the slot 26, as previously noted. The device is, therefore, simple in construction andnot liable to get outof" an ejector lever pivoted thereon, a slug I,
