HUMIDIFIER Filed Marone, 1951 2 snewsheer 2 A TTORNE Y Patented May 17, 1932 Parma-'rA FRANK J. HOERSTING, F DAYTON, OHIO HUMIDIFIER Application filed March 2, 1931. Serial No. 519,388.
My invention relates to humidifiers. 1t is the object of my invention to provide a humidifier which will thoroughly incorporate moisture with incoming air to be delivered to an enclosure gV and which will thoroughly scrub excess moisture and dirt in the air from the air prior to delivery to the fans and thence into the enclosure. 1
In particular, it is the object of my invention to provide a knock-down structure which can be quickly disassembled and assembled so that the structure can be carried in its several parts through an ordinary two-foot six-inch door, such as in cellars of dwellings, where my invention is to be primarily used in connection with hot air heating systems.
The present difficulty with humidiiers of various types is that they have to be completely built Within the cellar of the building and must be fabricated at the point where they are used, thereby preventing ready replacement, repair and adjustment, as well as cleaning, and may cause excess costs due to the fact that the humidier must be built by hand in restricted places in cellars.
My invention, to the contrary, incorporates a separable structure into various component parts, in addition to providing novel features that have additional advantages of construction and operation.
Referring' to the drawings, Figure 1 is a top plan view.
Figure 2 is a side elevation.
Figure 3 is an end elevation of the outgoing or fan end of the humidifier.
Figure 4 is an end elevation of the inlet end where the humidifier sprays are located.
Figure 5 is a section on the line 5 5 of Figure 1.
Figure 6 is a section on the line 6-6 of Figure 5.
Referring to the drawings in detail, 1 indicates the inlet air opening through which incoming air is delivered over the water sprays 2 supplied by the water pipes 3. The sprays are directed in the direct-ion of the air flow. They, therefore, do not impede the air flow but assist it. The air passes through the sprays rather than have the sprays driven through the air. As the sprays .overlap due to the expansion of the spray cones upon the release of'water through the sprays, the air passes through a plurality ofthe sprays in a major portion of the interior of the humidifying chamber t. The bottom of this humidifying chamber is provided with two sections 5 and 6 to form a trough, the base of which is at 7, from which the liquid may be removed through the aperture 8. The sprays are directed not only7 in the direction of the 60 air movement but also towards the scrubber plates 9 so that whatever burden of free moisture is incorporated in the air vwill be immediately scrubbed from the air by the contact with the plates 9 which are provided with 65 angular portions 10 to catch the free moisture on the plates and to convey that moisture downwardly by gravity where the moisture runs 0E through apertures 11 in the false botl tom 12 above the tilted bottom 13 which con- 70 veys the free water through the aperture 14 onto the bottom 6 and thence out through the aperture 8. Y
The top of the humidifier chamber is provided with a box enclosure 15 telescopically 75 mounted as at 16 within the top of the humidifier chamber. The flange 17 of this box rests upon the flange 18 on top of the humidifier chamber. When the closure is removed the scrubber can be inserted through the opening closed thereby. p
It will be further noted that the scrubber plates 9 are mounted at their lower ends upon the false bottom 12 and are provided with a cover 21a and side walls21,
Thus the entire group of scrubber plates, top and bottom plates, are a unit. This unit is slidably ymounted within the passageway formedby the side walls 22, bottom 13 and top 23 leading from the humidifier chamber 4. This passageway constitutes the scrubber 10 chamber 24. It is thus possible to remove the entire scrubber from the scrubber chamber for cleaning, adjustment and repair, and take it out of the top of the humidifier chamber; and it is possible to remove the box 15 to reduce the dimensions of the humidifier chamber or to let the box remain in position and remove one or more of the covers 18.
It will be further noted that as a part of the facility of disassembly and assembly coming from the use of my particular construction, I provide for the telescopic engagement of the outlet and of the scrubber chamber with the inlet end of the fan chamber. A collar 25 receives the inner end 26 of the scrubber chamber, which is limited in its inward movement by the angular abutment 27 engaging the angulaiabutment 2S on the respcctive scrubber chamber and fan chamber en s.
The fan chamber is formed of a bottom wall 29, a top wall 30 and side walls 3l. Journaled in the side walls 31 is a fan shaft 32 having the fans 33 mounted thereon. These fans are driven by a pulley 34, belt 35 and motor 36.
The outlet openings 37 from the fan are normally closed by the self-closing dampers 38 which are opened by the pressure of the air when the fan is in operation.
It is to be further noted in this construction that all of the excess water tends to run backwardly counter to the direction of the air so that the air passes over the surface of the water for further incorporation of the moisture with the air.
It will be further noted that the scrubber casing is limited in its inward movement by the shoulder 40 on the outlet end of the scrubber chamber. o
I desire to comprehend within my invention such modifications as may be embraced within my claims and the scope of my invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim is new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
l. In combination, a humidifier chamber, a. scrubber chamber connected to the humidifier chamber, a scrubber and scrubber frame slidably mounted in said scrubber chamber and means for causing the entry and removal of the scrubber from the scrubber chamber through said humidifier chamber, said humidifier chamber having a detachable cover closing, an opening through which said scrubber can be introduced and removed and an air inlet opening in which water spray means are located.
2. In combination, a humidifier chamber having an air inlet and an air outlet, a trough-like bottom in said humidifier chamber, a scrubber chamber having av tapered bottom communicating with the trough-like bottom of the humidifier, a detachable scrubber having a top, side walls and a horizontal bottom wall perforated to allow moisture to escape and a plurality of spaced scrubber plates interposed therebetween and supported on the perforated bottom above the tapered bottom and the sloping bottom of the scrubber chamber; and water sprays adjacent the air inlet opening of the humidier chamber having their sprays directed in the same direction as the passage of air therethrough towards the scrubber in the scrubber chamber.
3. In combination, a humidifier chamber having an air inlet opening, an air outlet opening and a top opening, a box member open at the top and bottom mounted in said top opening, a detachable cover for said box, water sprays beneath said box and detachable cover in the path of the incoming air through the air inlet opening, a scrubber in the air outlet opening from the humidifier chamber,
and means of conveying surplus moisture from the scrubber back into the bottom of the humidifier chamber.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
FRANK J. HOERSTING.
