WRENQH Filed June 18, 1929 ATTORN EY Q Patented Apr. 26, 1932 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE j I I SVEN JOE-AN NORDSTROM, OF OAKLAND, CALIFORNIA, ASSIGNOR TO MERCO NORD- STROM VALVE COMPANY OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA, A =CORPORATION OF DELAWARE WRENCH- Application filed June 18,
The invention relates to an improvement in wrenches and more particularly to an improvement in wrenches especially adapted for manipulating the rotatable plug member of plug valv%. j
The object of the invention is to provideplug valves, such as pressure lubricated plugvalves, with a strong, simple and eificient wrench which can be manufactured at low cost. 'To this end the invention consists in the improved wrench hereinafterfully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings illustrating the preferred form of the invention, Fig. 1
is a side elevation of a plug valve showing the application of the improved wrench thereto, the wrench being shown, in longitudinal section; Fig-2 is a top plan: of the parts shown in Fig. 1.; Fig; 3 is a transverse section taken on the line 3.8 of Fig. 1 'and Fig. 4 is a perspective View of the improved wrench removed from thevalve. The improved wrench is adapted to manipulate the plug -member of any usual or preferred form of plug'valve. The valve shown in the drawings is of the pressure lubricated type and comprises a casing member. 5 in which is rotata ly mounted a-plug member of which the usual stem 6 projects from the easing and is provided at its outer end with a head 7 providing means for the manipulation of the plug, that is to say, the turning or ro-. tating of the plug to its open and closed posi-' tions. The head 7 of the valve stem 6 is shown as an elongated memberrectangular in cross-section and projecting at each end a substantial distance beyond the rounded sides 8 of the valve stem, andialso extending outwardly slightly beyond the lat al flattened sides 9 of the valve stem, as ind'catcd. in Fig. 2. Projecting downwardly from one; end of the head 7 is a "pin 11 adapted to cooperate with the fixed stops 10 on the casing 5 to limit the plug to a 90- turn in each direction.
The improved wrench consists of an elongated member rectangular in crosssection, as indicated clearly in Figs. 3 and 4, formed from apiece of sheet metaL' In its internal 50 measurements the wrench is of such size asto 1929. Serial No. 371,740.
. ofthe top portion 12 of the wrench resting upon the top of the head 7 of the valve stem, the inner surfaces of the lateral sides 13 and 14 of the wrench pressing against the lateral sides of the head 7- and the inturned portions 15 and 16 of the sides of the wrench projecting slightly under the bottom surface 17 of the head. The inner edges 18 of theinturned 00 portions 15 and 16 of the sides of the wrench slightly. clear the flattened sides 9 of the valve stem.
' If the wrench is to be used on a pressure lubricated plug valve such as that illustrated in the drawingsand provided with a fitting 20 adapted for connection with a pressure grease gun the wrench will be-provided at one end with a hole '21 to accommodate the fitting. When the wrench is placed-in position on a valve provided with, the fitting 20, the fitting will first be removed. Then the wrench will be slid into position thereon with the hole 21 in alinement with the hole in the head 7 adapted to receive the fitting. The fitting will then be screwed back into place.
By reason of the fact that the wrench is shaped to fit snugly over the head 7 of the valve stem, it is adapted to remain permanentl'y on the valve to manipulate the plug. 30 The fact that the wrench can be formed from apiece of sheet metal conduces to cheapness of manufacture while at the same time providing a strong and durable wrench. The rounded corners 22 of the wrench together with the top and lateralsides lend the wrench a shape convenient to be gripped by the hand of the operator. A Having thus'described the invention what I claim as new is l 1. A wrench for mani vided with a valve stem having an elongated head rectangular in cross-section, said wrench consisting of an elongated member formed of sheet metal and being rectangular in cross-section and slightly larger than the cross-section of the head of the valve stem adapting the wrench to fit the head of the valve stem. Y Y
2. A wrench for manipulating valves propulating valves procross-section of thehead so that the wrench fits snugly over the head, the lateral edges of the sides of the wrench being inturned to fit lundgr the edges of the bottom side of the 3. A wrench for manipulating valves pro vided with a valve stem having an elongated head rectangular in cross-section, the sides of the head extending laterally beyond the sides of the valve stem, said wrench consistingot an elongated member formed of sheet metal and having a top and two sides, the lateral edges of the sides being inturned so that the wrench in cross-section determines a rectangle slightly larger than the head .in cross-section, the wrench being adapted to slide longitudinally onto the elongated head of the valve stem.
4. A wrench for manipulating valves provided with a valve stem having an elongated head rectangular in cross-'s,ection, the outer side of the head being provided with a pressure gun fitting, said wrench consisting of an elongated member having a top provided with a hole adapted to accommodate the fitting and two sides, the top and sides forming a'rectangle' slightly larger than the head, the wrench being adapted to fit over the head with the top of the wrench engaging the outer side of the head and the fitting occupying the holei in the top of the wrench.
5'. A wrench for manipulating valves provided with a valve stem having an elongated head, said wrench consisting of an elongated memberformed of sheet metal and having an internal cross-section corresponding to and slightly largerthan the cross-section of the elongated head whereby one end of the wrench is adapted to he slid longitudinally onto the head to have an operative connection therewith. i
- 6. In combination with a valve [with a valve stem having a head an a lubricating device attached to the outer side of the head, a wrench consisting of an elongated n1ember'formed to fit over the head to have a torque transmitting engagement therewith, the wrench being provided with a hole to accommodate the lubricating device, whereby said device serves to retain the wrench on the head.
7. A wrench for manipulating valves-provided with a valve stem having a transversely arranged elongated head non-circular in cross-section and provided on its outer side with a pressure gun fitting, said wrench consisting of an elongated member formed of sheet metal and having an internal crossrovided,
section corresponding to and slightly larger than the cross-section of the elongated head whereby one end of the wrench is adapted to he slid longitudinally onto the head, said one end of the wrench having in its outer, side a hole to accommodate the fitting.
