This invention relates to hand bags having one or more side pockets closed by cover flaps and has for its principal object to simplify the construction and assembly of such bags. I 7

Other objects of the invention are to simplify the attachment of the cover flaps to bags of this type, to facilitate access to the pockets, and to give the entire bag an attrac- 1Q tive symmetrical appearance.

A bag constructed according to this invention may have pockets on one or both sides with openings below the top of the bag.

The cover consists of a sheet of leather or other material which is folded over the top of the bag so as to form flaps which hang down the sides and cover thepockets.

The cover is preferably secured to the bag by means of a band or yoke which fits snugly over the folded edge of the cover and clamps it to the top of the bag. The band or yoke is preferably secured in place by means of rivets, or by means of rings which may also be used for attaching a handle to the bag.

The invention will be described in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which:

Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a. hand bag embodying the invention;

Fig. 2 is a transverse section through the bag with one cover flap open;

Fig. 3 is a similar view of a bag having only one side pocket;

Fig. 4 is a fragmentary view with parts broken away to show the construction of the frame;

Fig. 5 is an enlarged section through the upper edge of the bag; and

Fig. 6 is a similar view showing a modified form of the invention.

The hand bag shown in Figs. 1 and 2 has a frame consisting of a flat U-shaped channel 10 to the sides of which the leather or other bag material 11 is attached by means of gussets 12 which preferably reach almost but not quite to the top of the frame.

channel of the frame 10, and thus divides the receptacle into two similar side pockets 14 and 15. The pockets are each lined with a layer of cloth or other material 16 which is stitched at 17 to the lower edge of the partition 13 and also extends across the sides of the bag so as to line the gussets 12.

The cover for both pockets preferably consists of a single sheet of leather or other material 18 which is folded over the top of the frame 10 so as to form flaps 19 and 20 which hang down on opposite sides of the bag and cover the respective pockets 14 and 15. In the form shown in the drawings the cover flap 19 is substantially rectangular, while the cover flap 20 is rounded at the bottom to distinguish the otherwise identical pockets. The shape, however, is immaterial. The under sides of the cover flaps 19 and 20 are provided with snap fastener buttons 21 co-operating with the usual sockets 22 to hold the cover flaps closed.

The cover 18 is secured to the top of the frame 10 by means of a band or yoke which may be made of one piece of metal or other material, but is here shown as consisting of two parallel rods 23 having their ends riveted or welded to connecting links 24. The space between the rods 23 is just a little greater than the width of the frame 10 so that the band may be wedged over the folded edge of the cover 18, clamping it snugly to the frame.

In the form of the invention shown in Figs. 1 to 5 the band is held in place by rivets or pins 25 which extend through the rods 23, cover 18 and frame 10, securing the parts firmly together. Rings 26 extend through the frame 10 and cover 18 adjacent the ends of the bag and above the band 23, and have the handle 27 attached thereto.

The bag shown in Fig. 3 is similar to that shown in Figs. 1 and 2 except that it has only one side pocket 12, while the other side is flat without any pocket. The cover is attached to the bag in the manner previously described, but since only one cover flap 19 is required for the single pocket 12, the cover material can terminate in a small tab 28 on the flat side of the bag. In either case, it will be seen that the bag has an attractive, symmetrical appearance, and that the pockets are readily accessible to the user.

If desired, the rivets or pins 25 may be dispensed with, and the band 23 secured to the bag by means of rings 29 which also serve as a means of attaching the handle to the bag, as shown in Fig. 6.

In Figs. 1 and 2 the pocket 14 is provided with a change purse of the usual type attached, in one case to the central partition 13, and in the other case to the lining on the fiat side of the bag.

Various changes may be made in the details of construction herein shown and described without departing from the scope and spirit of the invention as defined in the appended claims.

The invention claimed is:

1. The combination with a hand bag having pocket openings on opposite sides below the top, of a flap folded over the upper edge of the bag and hanging down on both sides to cover the pocket openings, and a band surrounding the folded edge of the flap to clamp it to the bag.

2. A hand bag comprising a frame, a pocket secured to the frame, a flap folded over the top of the frame and hanging down to cover the pocket, and a band wedged over the upper edge of the frame and folded edge of the flap to hold them together.

3. A hand bag comprising a frame, a pocket secured to the frame, a flap folded over the top of the frame and hanging down to cover the pocket, a band surrounding the folded edge of the flap and clamping it to the frame, and locking means extending through the band, flap and frame to hold them together.

4. A hand bag comprising a frame, a pocket secured to the frame, a flap folded over the top of the frame and hanging down to cover the pocket, a band surrounding the upmeans for locking the band, flap and frame together.

7. A hand bag comprising a U-shaped frame, a receptacle secured to the frame ends having longitudinal openings on opposite sides of the frame below the top, a partition secured to the top and ends of the frame dividing the receptacle into separate side pockets, a flap folded over the top of the frame and hanging down on both sides to cover the pocket openings, a band surrounding the up per edge of the frame and folded edge of the flap to clamp same together, rivets extending through the band, flaps and frame, rings extending through the flap and frame above the band, and a. handle attached to said rings.
