This invention has reference to a revolving ii at card machine, and has for its object to provide the same with stop motion mechanism, whereby the doll'er and feed will be automatically stopped whenever there is a cessation in the transmission of power to the comb of the machine, and the present application is a continuation in part of my copending application Serial No. 387,936 filed in August 23, 1929.
As is well known, the stopping of the comb permits a choke down if the dofler is not also stopped, which results in injury to the doifer and the clothing thereon as well as injury to the flats and the expense of repairing such in jury is considerable. I have found that such injury can be eliminated if the doffer and feed are stopped immediately upon a stopping of the comb and to this end I have devised a stop mechanism forming part of the means for transmitting powe from the doffcr to the licker-in, and so arranged, to be controlled by the power belt connecting the idler pulley of the card machine with the comb pulley so that in the event the referred eh able period of time subsequent to the stopping of the comb thus preventing further feeding of the material through the card machine.
A still further object of the invention is to provide in a stop device as and for the purpose specified, improved means for transmitting power from the doli'er gear to a pulley having a belt drive connection with a pulley of the licker-in together with governor 40 means operable to immediately interrupt such drive connection when the comb is, for any reason, stopped.

Another known part of the machine to be considered, is the drop lever 9 having a curved end pivoted to the base of the machine, and a free end operating in a vertical guide 23. Pivotally mounted in the guide 23 is a cam lever 24, having its cam head portion 2 1a keyed to the pivot pin 25. On the pivot pin 25 is a tooth 26 adapted as and for a purpose to be hereinafter made manifest, to be engaged bya notch 27 provided in a shiftable bar 28 for effecting a rotation of the cam lever from the full line position shown in Figure 5 when the comb of the machine is stopped. a

According to the present invention, the bar 28 provided for the purpose mentioned, at one end is pivoted as at 29 to an arm 30 fixed as at 31 to the lateral end of an arm 32 equipped with a ring or annular part 33.

From what has been stated, it will be apparent that during the transmission of power from the dofi'er drum or cylinder to the licker-in, arm 30 will be caused to oscillate or swing back and forth by reason of the eccentric pin 44 engaging in slot 45 and disk 43 is rotated with shaft 39 driven through the medium of gearing 38 and pinion 42 meshing therewith.
i To retain the bar 28 during its shifting movement under action of the swinging arm 30, in the dotted lineposition shown in Figure 5 and with its notch 27 out of engagement with tooth 26,1 provide as shown to advan tage in Fi ure 7, a bellcrank 46 pivoted on a bracket 47 extending laterally from the frame of the card machine.
The bell crank lever 46 has one end 46a thereof engageable with the bar 48 while the other end of the bell crank lever is pivotally connected as at 48 to one end of a governor controlled rod 49 mounted for sliding movement transversely of the card machine adjacent the d'ofier cylinder 21 thereof.
To retain the bell crank lever 46 in the position shown in Figure 7, and the bar 28 in the dotted line position shown in Figure 5, rodv 49 is normally urged in the direction of the arrow 50 in Figure 4 through the medium of a centrifugal governor on that side of the machine opposite to the drop rod 9 as will be presently made manifest.
The referred to centrifugal governor comprises a tube 51 secured as at 52 to one side of the card machine and provided with one or more slots 53 accommodating the pins projecting therethrough from the inner end of rod 49 and connecting with the rod 49 a collar 54 disposed about the sleeve 51 and slidable relative thereto. Collar 54 is engaged by sliding collar 55 on the sleeve. Collar 55 is connected by spring arms 56 to the hub projection 57 of a pulley 68 rotatable on the sleeve and secured against longitudinal shifting movement through the medium of collar 59 and nut device 60. i

Referring to Figure 2, it will be seen that the groove of pulley 58 receives a run of belt 12, so thatrduring the transmission of power from idler pulley 13 to comb pulley 11, the centrifugal'governor will be actuated, causing the weighted spring arms 56 thereof to fly outwardly to the dotted line position shown in Figure 4 to exert a pull upon collar 55 causing collar 54 to move toward the pulley 58 thus exerting a pull on rod 49 in the direction of the arrow 50 with the result that as before stated bell crank lever 46 is retained in the position shown in Figure 7, and the comb, doffer and licker-in of. the card machine are free to and do operate in the usual manner.
With the machine thus operating let it now be assumed that for some reason belt 12 breaks. In such an event, the arms 56 of the centrifugal governor would assume the full line position shown in Figure 4, whereupon under the weight of bar 28 arm 46a of the bell. crank lever will swing downwardly in the direction of the bracket 47 and collar 54 being free to slide inwardly or away from'the pulley 58, rod 49 would be shifted in the direction of arrow 50a in Figure 4 with the result that bar 28would assume the full line position in Figure 5 with the notch 27 of the bar engaging tooth 26 as shown in Figure 3.
Thus far, it will be appreciated, that upon breaking of belt 12, the comb will stop. However, the dotfer cylinder will rotate sufficiently long enough to cause, through the Indium of gear 22, gear '38, pinion 42, disk 43 and eccen tric pin 44 a shifting of bar 28 while in its fullline position to the left in Figure 5 to thereby swing cam lever 24 in the direction of the arrow in Figure 5 whereupon drop lever 9 will swing downwardly about its pivot.
Thus it will be apparent, that no power will be transmitted from the licker-in to the dofier cylinder with the result, that, upon stopping of the comb, the doffer is also stopped.
, Asis well known, and shown in Figure 2, power from the -doifer cylinder 21 is transmitted to the feed rollthrough the medium of gearing 8 connecting-the doffer cylinder with a shaft 7 which in turn is provided with a gear not shown in mesh with the feed roll gear 6 so that upon stopping of the dolfer cylinder 21, there is no transmission of power from said cylinder to the feed roll, as is apparent with the result that upon stopping of the comb, and doller cylinder, the feed is also sto oped.

As soon as the machine begins its normal opera tion, the centrifugal governor will be actuated in a manner hereinbefore described for exerting a pull on the rod l9 in the direction of the arrow 50 in Figure l to thereby retain the rod 28 in its raised or normal position.
Even though I have herein shown and de scribed the preferred embodiment of the in vention, it is to be understood that the same is susceptible of further changes, modifications and improvements coming within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is:
1. In a carding machine, a tight and loose pulley construction for the card cylinder, a comb pulley, a driving connection between said tight and loose pulley construction and said comb pulley, a licker-in pulley driven from said tight and loose pulley construction, a doli'er gear, a pivoted drop lever, a pulley rotatably mounted on the lever and having a driving connection with a second liclter-in pulley, a gear rotatable with the pulley on the drop lever meshing with the duller gear when said drop lever is in one position, and means for normally retaining the drop lever in said one position, and for releasing the latter upon the stopping of the comb pulley so that the referred to gears are disengaged to effect a stopping of the doiler.
card machine comprising a loose and tight pulley construction for the card cylin der thereof, a comb pulley, a driving con noction between said tight and loose pulley construction and said comb pulley, a lickerin pulley having a drive connection with said tight and lose pulley construction, a pivoted drop lever, a pulley rotatably mounted thereon and having a drive con nection with a second liclter-in pulley, a duller cylinder, a gear therefor, a gear rotating with the pulley on said drop lever and meshing with the dofler gear when the drop lever is in one position, a feed roll gear having driven connection with the doil'er cylinder, and means controlled by the driving connection between the tight and loose pulley construction and the comb pulley for normally retaining said drop lever in said one position, and operable to release said drop lever by reason of absence of drive from said tight and loose pulley construction to said comb pulley whereby on the stopping of the comb, the feeding mechanism and the doller are automatically stopped.

A card machine comprising in combination a doiter gear, a pivoted drop lever, a gear on said drop lever movable into and out of engagement with the dotl'er gear, driving means for the second named gear, and governor control means normally retaining said drop lever in position to engage the second named gear with the doffer gear, said governor control means including a transversely shiftable member, a pivoted cam engaging the drop lever, and means controlled by said shiftable member for rotating the cam upon movement of the shiftable member.

A card machine comprising in combination a dotler gear, a pivoted drop lever, a gear rotatably mounted thereon for movemeat into and out of mesh with the first named gear, driving means for the second named gear, a pivotally mounted cam engageable with the drop lever normally retaining the same in one position to thereby hold the second named gear in mesh with the first named gear, and normally inactive governor controlled shiftable means for rotating said cam means for etlecting a displacement of said drop lever to thereby move the second named gear out of mesh with the dolier gear,

A card machine comprisingin combination a dotler gear, a pivoted drop lever, cam means normally retaining said lever in one position, a driven pulley on said drop lever, a gear driven from said pulley for mesh with the dotler gear when said drop lever is in said one position, a comb pulley, driving means for said comb pulley, and means controlled by said driving means for actuating said cam means to release the drop lever when the comb stops to thereby move the second named gear out of engagement with the dolier gear whereby the dofi'er is automatically stopped.

A carding machine including in combination a dolfer gear, a pivoted drop lever, a driven pulley mounted thereon, a gear driven by said pulley and adapted to mesh with the dotler gear "for transmitting power from said pulley to the doller, a pivotally mounted cam lever engaging said drop lever, and normally inactive means for rotating the cam lever and operable upon stopping of the comb for rotating the cam lever to release the drop lever when the comb of the card machine is stopped whereby said pulley driven gear will be moved out of engagement with the dofler gear and the dofier automatically stopped- 'Z. A stopping device for a cardingmachine wherein the latter includes a dofler gear, a pivoted drop lever, a driven gear on the lever meshing with the dotfer gear, and movable out of mesh with the doller gear upon descent of the drop lever, a fixed arm extending downwardly from the drop lever, a rockable arm pivotally mounted on .sa1d fixed arm, eccentric means onthe fixed arm driven from the second named gear for rocking said pivoted arm, a bar pivotally connected with said pivoted arm, and means controlled by saidbar for releasing the drop lever whereby to move the driven gear out of mesh with the dofier gear.
8. A card machine comprising in combination a dofier gear, a pivoted drop lever, a
pivoted cam lever engaging the drop lever to normally retain the same in one position, a gear on the drop lever for movement into and out of mesh with the doli'er gear, a reciprocating bar engageable with the cam lever for rotating the latter, and having a driving connection with the gear on the drop lever, and governor control means normally retaining said reciprocating bar out of engagement with the cam lever.
9. A device for tripping the cam lever of a carding machine on the abnormal stopping of the comb of the machine, comprising a movable control bar engageable with the cam lever, speed governor control means operative during normal operation of the comb for retaining said control bar out of engagement with the cam lever, and for releasing the control bar on an abnormal stopping of the comb, so that it engages said cam lever for tripping the latter.

A device for tripping the drop lever of a carding machine on the abnormal stopping of the comb comprising a shaft constrained to slide transversely of the machine, speed'control centrifugal governor means operatively connected with one end of said shaft and having drivenconnection with the comb pulley of the card machine for normally urging said shaft in one direction, rockable means normally engaged with the drop lever of the carding maclnne -for retaining the same in a predetermined position during normal operation of the machine, a control rod, means operatively connected with said shaft for normally retaining said control rod out of engagement with said rockable means, said governor being operable on the stopping of said comb for shifting said shaft for releasing said control rod for movement of the latter into engagement with said rockable means, means for transmitting movement to said control rod whereby upon release of said control rod andthe subsequent engagement thereofwith said rockable means, said rockable means will be actuated for tripping the drop lever.
11. In a device for tripping the drop lever of a carding machine on anabnormal stopping of the comb of the machine, comprising acontrol rod mounted for reciprocation, a pivot pin, a support therefor, a cam on said pivot pin for rotation therewith and engageable with the drop lever for normally retaining the sameinfone position during normal operation of the machine, a member on said pivot pin adapted to be engaged by said control rod for rocking said cam to release said drop lever, means operable during normal operation of the comb for retaining said control rod out of engagement with said mem her and for releasing said control rod for movement into engagement with said member on an abnormal stopping of said comb, and means controlled by the power transmitting means between the dofier and licker-in for reciprocating said control rod.

In combination with the drop lever, cam lever and doffer gear of a card machine, means for tripping said cam lever on an abnormal stopping of the comb, of the cardinachine and comprising a rod mounted for reciprocation and adapted for engagement with the cam lever for rotating-the same on said abnormal stopping of the comb, means operatively connected with the comb for normally retaining said reciprocating rod out of engagement with said cam lever and operable upon abnormal stopping of the comb for releasing said reciprocating rod so that the latter may move into engagement with said cam lever, and means onthe drop lever for transmitting power from the dofier gear to said reciprocating bar.
13. A device for tripping the drop lever of a card machine on an abnormal stopping of the comb of said machine comprising pivoted cam means for normally retaining said drop lever in a predetermined position, a rod mounted for reciprocation and engageable with said pivoted cam means for rotating the same on said abnormal stopping of the comb, means operatively connected with the comb for normally retaining said reciprocating rod out of engagement with said pivoted cam means and operable upon abnormal stopping of the comb to release said reciprocating rod so that the latter may move into engagement with said cam means, and means for transmitting power from the dofier driven gear on the drop lever to said reciprocating rod, so that the latter will actuate the cam means subsequent to the engagement of the reciprocating rod with the cam means.
