The present invention relates to brushes for writing implements and the like and more in particular to a novel movable brush adapted to be attached to the exterior of the writing implement.

Among the objects of my invention are to provide a convenient brush adapted to be attached to a writing implement or the like which can be made at a very small cost and a which will be light in weight so as not to make the eraser end of the pencil or the like heavy or ungainly.

Another object is to provide a brush which is adapted to be attached to a pencil or the like which can be easily and quickly extended to a position so that it can be used when needed and also with the same ease and simplicity of operation be returned to a position where it will not interfere either with the use of the pointed end of the writing implement or the erasing end.

A further object of this invention is to pro vide a movable brush to dust away crumbs left by the use of an eraser either rubber or metal, and to do away with the usual methods of removing such crumbs and dust, as for example blowing with ones breath which is unsanitary, or passing ones hand or a cloth over the object, which are very likely to smudge the marks and which are otherwise objectionable.

Also to provide a brush to dust away crumbs left by an erasure to prevent ones fingers from becoming soiled and leaving smutty finger prints on the material where the marks appear, and such other objects, advantages and capabilities as will later more fully appear.

My invention further resides in a combination. construction and arrangement of parts illustrated in the accompanying drawings and while I have shown therein apreferred embodiment of my invention and also one other way of constructing the same, I wish these to be understood as illustrative only and not as limiting the scope of my invention.

Fig. 1 is a top or plan view of a writing implement with the device attached.

Referring now in more detail to the drawings, the particular embodiment selected to illustrate the invention is shown as comprising a carrier in the form of a writing implement or pencil l with a rubber tip 2 suitable for erasing. The attachment consists of a blank or piece of metal or other suitable material 3 which is made in the form of the letter T, the portions 4 being bent back upon themselves to maintain and hold the bristles 5 of the brush. A in or small rivet 6 passes through the holes provided in the arms 4 which secures the bristles in place and also if placed on a pencil as shown in the drawings will prevent the device from slipping down into position when not in use by pressure against the writing member 1.

The device 3 is provided with a slot or groove 8 in which are small nails, screws or lugs 9, said small nails screws or lugs 9 being slightly out of alignment with the longitudinal center of the pencil so that the triotional contact obtained thereby is suflicient to prevent any sliding up or down of the device, cxcept by manual manipulation or adjustment by the operator. The slot or groove 8 extends long enough so that it will permit the brush to extend beyond the erasing end ofthe writing implement as shown in Fig. 2 and also to permit the device when not in use to go back into the position shown in Fig. 1.

A modification of this device is shown as constructed in Fig. l. The entire device is the same as that described above with the addition of a carrier sleeve 10 in which the sliding member 3 moves, there being sufficient frictional contact between these members to prevent relative movement except by manual operation. The small nails or screws 9 hold the sleeve member 10 to the side of the pencil or writing instrument, thus giving greater firmness to the device.

Having thus fully described my invention, I claim:
