To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, SAMUEL NELSON GOR- THELL, of Brockton, Plymouth county, state of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Apparatus for Applying Wax to Boot and Shoe Burnishing Machines, of which the following is a specification:

This invention relates to that class of burnishing-machines by means of which the heel and sole edges of boots and shoes are polished; and it consists in an apparatus or attachment for such machines for supplying wax to the burnishing-cylinder, for the purpose of assisting in the process of polishing, the construction, application, and operation of which will be hereinafter fully pointed out and described.

In the drawings, which form an essential part of this specification, Figure 1 is a front View of an apparatus in which is fully embodied my invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same, and Fig. 3 is a cross-section taken on line a w in Fig. 2.

This attachment is designed to be used in connection with any and all of the various heel and sole edge burnishing machines, for the purpose of applying wax to the burnishing-cylinder, to assist in the operation of burnishing. The advantages of so using wax are so well understood by all shoe-manufacturers that no specific description thereof is needed herewith.

A represents the bed or frame of a boot or shoe burnishing machine, which may be of any of the usual forms of construction. B is the burnishing-cylinder, mounted on a rotating shalt, O, in the usual manner. An adjustable reciprocating or a fixed gage may be used therewith for governing the presentation of the boot to the action of the burnishingcylinder. Such forms of gages being in common use and well understood, their representation is omitted from the drawings. D is an upright stand or frame attached to the bed A of the burnishing-machine. In its base there is formed a slot, through which is inserted a set-screw, a, by means of which its position on the bed of the machine is adjusted at the will of the operator. E is a wedgeshaped tube, which is attached, at its rear, to the stand D by means of hinges b and c, which permit it to swing outwardly. The stand and tube are so attached to the machine that the tube is directly over the center of the burnishing-cylinder, as shown plainly in Fig; 1. A hook, d, is attached to the front edge of the tube, and a spiral spring, a, fastened thereto, and to a projection or hook on the stand D, by means of which it is always drawn toward the front of theframe D. At the base and front of the tube E is attached a pin or guide, 9, which projects down below the periphery of the burnishing-cylinder, and rests against its face.

A quantity of wax, G, molded into the proper form and size, is inserted into the tube E, its lower end resting on the periphery of the cylinder B. Its own weight will usually serve to carry it down in the tube as it is used up; or a weight or proper plunger and spring attachment may be added to insure its proper manipulation and delivery to the burnishingcylinder.

It is obvious that the rapid revolving of the burnishing-cylinder will, by attrition, take up the wax, in minute quantities, upon its surface, and apply it to the heel or sole edge in the process of polishing.

As the burnishing-cylinders vary in width according to the widths of the soles or heels,

the wax-tube is made adjustable, so as to make one tube and apparatus answer for all sizes of cylinders. hanging it on hinges, as previously related. The pin-guide g, resting against the face of the cylinder, will retainit in a position at an angle with its periphery so that the Wax will rest over the'entire surface of the cylinder.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
