A window frame usually consists of parallel outer and inner boards 5 and 6, the inner board being referred to as a trim board in the carpenter trade. Between these boards is a. rear board '7,v andin the frontof the frame-is a jamb 8 parallel to the rear board.

These boards provide a hollow space 9 in the frame in which the sash weights and sash cords for counter-balancing the window are disposed; The outer board 5 projects beyond the jamb 8 to form one side 11 of the channel for the window sashes. On the other side of the jamb, a stop strip 12 customarily secured to the amb by'screws-l3'is provided to form another side 14 of the channel for the window sashes, and the entire channel is divided by a separator strip'15 which is set 1n a routed groove in the jamb. In order to securean attaching device 18 to a frame such as just described and which is representative of the standard frame found in window frame constructions, I drill a hole 19 through the ornamental strip 16, outer board 5, and extending into the jamb 8 almost to the inner edge of the jamb. This hole may extend entirely through the j amb if desired. I next form a hole 21in the jamb atright angles to the hole 19 and close to the inner edge of the jamb. This hole may be formed by 'drillingvtwo circular holes in the jamb and cuttingout the material between the holes with a keyhole saw so as to form an elongated hole 21. A'bolt 22-is then threaded through the attaching device 18 and aperture 19 so that its end terminates int-the opening 21. A washer 23 and nut 24 are then attached to theend of the bolt in the opening 21. W'hensthe device is applied to an'old window the stop strip 12 is first removed, which may be readily done due to the fact that this stop isvusually secured to'the jamb byscrews. In a new window construction the attachingdevice and bolt are secured in position before the stop strip is attached to the jarnb. Ineither case the construction is suchthat the hole 21 and the end of the bolt and the nut are completely concealed from view whether the window is open or closed. I

It will be noted that the bolt is anchored deeply in the jamb. It is advisable and even essential to extend the bolt far into the jambto provide a high safety factor. The slight weakening of the jamb by cutting out the hole 25 is compensated for by the closure.

The actual force which the bolt must resist in use, is not very great since the greatest pull on the attaching device is in a lateral direction, but the decay of the wood after years of use might render the device dangerous if it were not deeply anchored. Ithas beensuggested to extend a bolt for anchoring the attaching device through the trim board 6. However, if the end of the bolt extends beyond the face of the trim board it forms an unsightly obstruction. If the trim board is countersunk to receivethe washer and nut for the end of the bolt, .it still leaves a deep visible hole in the face of the trim board, which is highly undesirable. Even though the countersunk hole in the trim board might be covered by an ornamental strip such as 17 these strips are usually nailed securely to the trim board, and they are diificult to remove without splinter-ing or breaking. In some of the older buildings these ornamental strips 17 are of such design that it would be impossible to duplicate them in case they were destroyed in trying to remove them. The construction of this invention asdescribed above has been found extremely practical and it is not open to the numerous objections pointed out. From the artistic standpoint it in no way interferes with the design or ornamentation of the win- (low since it is completely concealed except for 'the attaching device 18 on the outside of the window.

' Itwill be understood that the embodiment of the invention herein described and disclosed ismerely a convenient and useful form of the invention, and that many modifications and changes may be made Without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.

What I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent of the United States is 1. A device for attachment of a window washers harness comprising a frame of parallel inner and outer boards, the inner board being a trim board, a jamb between said boards and supported thereby, said outer board and Jamb having an aperture extending therethrough, an anchoring device for the clip of the washers harness, a bolt for securing said anchoring device in position and extending through said aperture, said jamb having an opening at right angles to the bolt aperture and adjacent the inner edge of said jamb, a nut on the end of said bolt in the jamb opening, and a stop strip secured to the jamb and covering the amb opening to conceal the opening and the end of the bolt and nut from view.

A device for attachment of a window washers harness comprising a frame of parallel inner and outer boards, the inner board being a trim board, a jamb board between said boards and supported thereby, said jamb board having an opening for providing access to the sashcord and weights, a closure board for said opening, said outer board and p j amb having an aperture therethrough, a bolt extending through said aperture, an attaching device secured in position by said bolt, said jamb having an opening at right angles to said bolt aperture, a nut on the end of said bolt in said opening, said closure board having a groove for said bolt to permit removal of said board, and a stop strip secured to the jamb and covering the ]8.I.Ilb opening to conceal the jamb opening and the end of the bolt and nut therein.

In a device for attachment of a window washersharness, a frame having parallel inner and outer boards, a transverse rear board and a front jamb, a bolt extending through the outer board and into the jamb, said jamb having an opening at right angles to the bolt adjacent its inner edge into which the end of the bolt extends, a nut on the end of the bolt in said opening, for anchoring the bolt, an attaching device for a washers harness held in position by said bolt on the outside of the frame, and a stop strip secured to the jamb and covering said opening to conceal the opening and the end of the bolt and nut therein.

The combination with a window frame of substantially standard construction of a safety device for the attachment of a window washers harness, said combination including a window frame having inner and outer boards, a jamb between the two boards, an inner stop strip secured to the jamb, a parting strip forming with the inner stop strip and intermediate portion of the jamb, a channel for a window sash, said outer board and jamb having an aperture extending from the outer board to a point beyond the channel, and the jamb having a side opening communicating with the aperture, a fastening device, a bolt extending through the fastening device and through the aperture into said side opening, and a nut on the bolt adapted to be reached through said side opening when said stop strip is removed, whereby the channel and inner board have an unbroken sure face, and the bolt may be inserted or renewed without removing the inner board.

5. The combination of claim 4, wherein a. portion ofthe jamb along the channeleis cut away and covered by a closure strip, and said closure strip is grooved to form a channel for the bolt to permit its removal without removing the bolt.
