This invention relates to improvements in sprinkler heads of the type employed in fire extinguishing apparatus of the automatic. sprinkler type, and the principal ob ect of the invention is to provide a sprinkler head of high efficiency, sensitive, critical in its response to temperature conditions, and not subject to deterioration.
Another object is to provide a novel form of fusible link comprising a plurality of elements maintainable under pressure in predetermined operative relation and adapted to disintegrate upon relief of all or a part of said pressure.
To this end, the invention contemplates provision of a novel form of pressure transmitting link comprising a plurality of compression elements through which said pressure is transmitted, one of which 81611181113815 constituted by a fusible composition.
The invention further resides in various novel details of structure illustrated in the attached drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side view of a sprinkler head made in accordance with my invention, and Fig. 2 is a section on the line 22, Fig. 1. With reference to the drawings, the sprinkler head illustrated comprises a vented body member 1 adapted to be inserted by means of screw threads 2 in a sprinkler system. This body member comprises a yoke 3 in the outer end of which and in axial allgnment with the passage 4 through the body is a screw 5, see Fig. 2, the screw extending completely through the yoke. The outer end of the screw is provided with a head conslstlng in the present instance of a plurality of out wardly and upwardly curved fingers 6, this head functioning in obvious manner as a means for turning the screw 5, and also to spread transversely a liquid projected from the discharge passage 4. Y The device further comprises a; closure element 7 for the end of the passage4 and a composite link for insertion between the closure member and the inner end of the screw 5 whereby pressure may be exerted by the screw holding the closure element to its seat.
The composite link in a preferred form comprises'a plate 8, one end of -which is adapted to'seat in a slottedrecess 9n; the outer face of'the closure member 7,"see Fig; "2. a This plate 8-has a transverse opening 10in which in assembly is established acylindrical {receptacle 11 for a fusible compound such as alphamononitronaphthalene. Inconjunction with the receptacle 11, I provide a cylintacle, as shown in Fig.2, thisplunger bearing 'drical plunger 12'adapted for more or less loose insertion in the open end ofthe recep-' the preferably concaved bottom of the receptacle bears against the edge of the aperture "10*and'is' held againstsaid edge by a p'air of compression elements 13, 13. which lie on'opposltesides of the plate 8. The lower ends of the elements 13 are confined in a recess in one face of a washer 14, the other'face of,

the plunger 12 is recessed for reception of a ends of the elements 13, 13 tends to separate the latter, this tendency normally being opposed by the washers 14 and 15 in which the ends of said elements are confined. When, however, the fusiblecompound in the recepthe plate 8 through direct contact with the inclined inner surfaces 16 of the elements 13 acts as a wedge to separate these elements, thereby effecting a complete disintegration of the link and release of the closure member 7.
It will be noted that. the fused compound in the receptacle 11 escapes around the sides of the plunger 12, which latter, as set forth upper inwardly oflt'set ends of the elements 13 are similarly confined in arecess in the face tacle 11 is fused, the washer 14 is released and above, is only loosely fitted into the outer end of the receptacle.
I claim: 1. Afusible; link comprising a pair of transversely separable members, a third member intermediate said pair and constituting a Wedge tending to separate said members, and means including a fusible element held under compression between the first named and the third members for confining the ends of the former to prevent said 'se'paration. v V I 2. A fusible link comprising a pair of transversely separable members; 'athird member intermediate said pair and constit'ut ing a Wedge tending to separate said members, said Wedge member having an aperture opposite one end of said paired members, means for normally preventing separation of said paired members including a displaceable element located in said aperture, and a "fusible element confined under compression between said displaceable element and the edge of'saidapert'ure. y
