' RAZOR AND PACKAGE OF BLADES- Filed sept. 23. 1927 Ptenied Mu. 15,` 1932 1 UNITED STATES l JOHN C. SHERMAN, F GQBBAEI, MAINE .man um ramon or pumas Application #ledl September 23, 1922-7.V Serial No. 221,502.'
This invention relates to an improved safety @razor for use with a novel packof blades, the combination being such that old'blades may be removed from the razor and 'replaced by fresh ones without the necessity of touching either the discarded or fresh blades with thefingers. To this end, the'razor is providedwith manually releasable catches by which a blade can be picked '1 up or released'without the fingers of the operator coming in contactwith the blade. If desired, the'cap'of the razor which holds the 'blade in place may be of suflicient lengthto project beyond theends of the blade so that u `1t may be grasped and removed without the {ingers'touching the blade, so as to obviate the danger of cutting the fingers on the blade. The invention also includes a holder for Y fresh blades adapted to hold a plurality of y blades with spacers to facilitate the operation o'f'catch elements on the razor for picking up a blade.
For a more complete disclosure 'of my invention, reference is had to the descrlption I I thereof which follows, and to the drawings,
of which,-
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the several parts of a safety razor embodying the invention'.
Fig'ure2 is aperspective view of a package of razor blades which is supported on my im roved holder.
i i re 3 is a section of an assembled razor showing the relation of the various parts.
Figure 4 is a section on a larger scale of a portion of the razor Yshowing-how a blade is picked up from the package.
Referrmg tothe drawings in detail, 10 represents the handleV portion of a safety razor of a well known type. To this handleportion is secured a guard 11 having perforations 12, 13, 14 therethrough to receive respectively positioning pins 15, 16, 17 of a cap 18, between which and the guard 11 a'blade 19v may be clamped. The blade 19 is also perforated as at 20, 21, 22 to permit the pins 15,16, 17 to pass therethrough. These pins are customarily arranged in a line and the middle pin 16 is threaded so that when it is inserted through the perforation 13 and enters the hollow handle 10, it may be engaged by van elongated cylindrical nut 23 which extends through the handle 10 and is provided with a knurled end piece 24. When the nut 23 is inserted in the handle 10, a shoulder 25 ,65 formed bythe knurled end portion 24 engages the end of the handle 10 so that when the threaded pin 16 is inserted through the aperture 13 and is engaged by the internal threads of the nut 23, the cap 18 may be drawn up tightly against the guard 11 by turningthe finger piece 24. Heretofore the cap 18 has been made shorter than the blade 19, so that the ends of the latter will project beyond the cap and will enable the user to grasp the ends '65 of the blade with the fingers when removing the blade from the razor. vAccording to my invention, I may make the cap 18 longer than the blade 19, so that the jends of the cap will project beyond the ends of a blade in position, and the cap may be removed without touching the blade. In order to hold the blade 19 against the guard 11 independently' of the ycap 18, I providea pair of members or catches 26 which as shown in Figure 1 are. 75' arranged to project through the perforation 13 of the guard 11 and to extend through the perforation 21 of a blade 19. These members 26 are' adapted to engage edge portions of an aperture or apertures in a. blade in a manner to gri the blade. The members 26 may, if desire be hooked and may be normally pressed outwardly away froml each other by any suitable means so that after passing through the perforation 21 of the blade, they. will catch on-the further face of the blade and hold it against the guard 11. To this end, the catches 26 may beV mounted on spring members attac/hed'di'rectly to the handle 10 or the guard 11, or as shown they may 90 be pivotally attached tothe Ihandle 10 as at 27, suitable springs 28 being employed to press the catch members outwardly. It is to be understood that the term catches as applied herein to the members 26 is used by way of illustration and not limitation, and that it includes any-members movable to engage edge portions of a loose blade to grip and hold the same. The'threaded pin 16 is preferably channeled as at 29 to receive the v"ais catches E26. so that fthe i pin .16 may enter the .perforation :13 ffwithout ibeing obstructed thereby: .Thefinner face of the cap 18is also recessed as at ftoreceive the ends ofthe catch members 26. and to permit the cap to 11e :directly against the surface of the blade '19.
' lVhen vremoving `va vblade v:from the razor,the
.tacle and gpinching'together the1catches 26 by pressing :their supports with the fingers against the-springs 28. yThusza used'blade `ymay.bereadily removed :from the-razor Without the blade being touched bythe fingers of the operator. In order toinsert'a new blade or afresh blade in .the .razor withouttouching the blade with the StingersQI lprovide aspecial improvedpackage ofblades to cooperate with `the `catch membersfSZG. As shown yin .Figure 2, the'blades19ma-y be separated'by spacing 'membersl whichlmay ybe of paper 1or any convenient substance of 'suilicient vthickness to Aenable `the catching lpoints of the catch membersl26. to enter-between successive blades 'after beinglinserted through the perforation 21 of the y'top blade of .the package. The spacers"3l may vbe perforated or otherwise arranged.toallowclearance around the per- 'forations.21.of the blades` so thatthe spacers .themselveswill :not 'interfere with the catch .members"26. ln Vorder to Ahold a package of blades convenentlyl provide aholder comprising a base member V32 from which project a pair of pins 33, 34 spaced to enter the outer :perforations 20. 22 vof'the blades 19 of a package. When itis desired to linsertsa new blade intherazor, the `guard 11 may be brought down vin Contact zwith :the ktop blade of a package, the kpins 33, 34 entering the apertures 12, 14 in the :guard 11. This guides the catches 26 to the lperforation 21 of the blade.
These catches being pressed together may be inserted vthrough the perforation 21 ofv the .top "blade yand released `so as to engage the lower surfaceof theblade. When the han- !dle IOandguard "11 are-.now raised, the top "'blade'l) will bepicked'up'hy them. The cap ldmaybe thereupon placed against the blade --sibletorei'novea blade from the razor and to vinserta freshfbla'de easily and quickly with- Aouttouchi'ngfeither bladewith the fingers.
