ITED STATES PATENT QFFIGE.
JEAN LEOPOLD MEGRET, OF BORDEAUX, FRANCE.
IMPROVEMENT IN BOTTLE-STOPPERS, 84c.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 184,883, dated November 28, 1876; application filed May 6, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that JEAN LEoPoLD M GRET, manufacturer, of Bordeaux, France, have invented an Improved Stopper for Botties, and other vessels, of which the following is a specification My invention consists in an improved stopper for bottles, jars, and other vessels, for hermetically closing the same in a simple, expeditious, and efi'ective manner, and for expediting the opening of the same.
This stopper consists of a metallic case or capsule, to be applied over the opening of the bottle, pot, jar, flask, or other vessel, of glass, earthenware, or other material.
This case or capsule contains a cork stopper covered with parchment or cloth, and provided with a wire or metal band, which is supported by a number of strips or projecting pieces formed in the same piece as, or soldered to, the capsule. The wire or metal band presses against the rim of the-bottle or vessel to be stoppered, so that, by pressing the case or capsule on the top of the bottle or vessel to be closed, it forms a joint over the orifice without entering the neck of the bottle or other vessel, the diameter of the cork being greater than that of the opening. 7
When sufficient pressure is being applied to force the wire or metal band to pass under the rim of the vessel to be closed, the fastening of the stopper is effected by twisting together the two ends of the wire or metal band, which are crossed and left sufficiently long for the purpose.
To make the invention better understood, I will proceed to describe the same by reference to the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure 1 is an elevation, and Fig. 2 a section,ot' the form of stopper ,I prefer for closing jars, pots, and other similar vessels; Fig. 3, elevation of the form of stopper suitable for an ordinary bottle; and Fig. 4, elevation of a stopper for champagne-bottles.
a is the case or capsule, made of thin sheet metal stamped into the required form. b is the cork stopper inside the case or capsule a. This cork is covered on the under side with cloth or parchment c, to prevent contact of the substance or liquid in the jar or bottle with the cork. d d are the strips forming loops or stirrups supporting the wire 0, which passes through the looper.
To apply this stopper to a bottle or other vessel, the stopper is placed on the top of the neck, and sufficient pressure applied to bring the wire 0 below the rim or projecting ring on the neck of the bottle or other vessel. The ends 0 of the wire 0 are drawn so as to bring the wire 6 close againstv the neck, under the rim or ring of the same, and are then twisted together.
To open a bottle or other vessel closed by this improved stopper, the ends of the Wire 6 have merely to be untwisted, when the stopper can be removed.
The covering or lining of cork will depend upon the nature of the liquid or matter or substance contained in the bottle or vessel. For example: For an aciduious liquid, the cork will becovered first with a vulcanized cloth, and then recovered with a linen or cotton cloth.
' For an oily or greasy liquid or substance, the cork will be covered with parchment, and then recovered with a linen or cotton cloth. For an acid liquid, the cork will be covered with a linen or cotton cloth. For some cases, the corkwill be covered with a slight metal sheet.
Having now described my invention, and the manner of, performing the same, what I claim is The herein'described bottle-stopper, consisting of the outer metal case a, inner cork b, loops d on the case, and wire 6, all constructed and combined substantially as specified, and with or without the lining c.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification before two subscribing witnesses.
