Description
A. M. com.
BODY-JACKS.
No. 184,841. Patented Nov. 2Q, 1876 ATTORNEYS UNITED STATES PATENT @rrrcn.
ALVA M. com, or BATAVIA, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN BODY-JACKS- Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. [84,841, dated November 28, 1876; application filed September 23, 1876.
1'0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALVA M. COLT, of Batavia, in the county of Genesee and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Body-Jacks; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the use of a frame with which are arranged certain levers and a screw for the purpose of raising and supporting the bodies of vehicles, as will be hereinafter more particularly set forth.
In the accompanying drawing, which is a perspective View of my invention, A A represent the side pieces, and B B the cross-bars, which compose the frame of my machine, said frame being made about the length and near the inside width of an ordinary carriage. (.l and D represent curved levers. The levers D D are pivoted or hinged to the side pieces A A, and the levers O O are pivoted to boxes or sleeves a a, which surround the side pieces A, and which slide or are movable upon said pieces. These levers G and D cross each other at each side of the frame, and are pivoted together near their centers, and suitably braced by a rod which crosses from one set to the other. H represents a metallic bar,
which is made in the shape represented, and which is provided with slots near its ends. A set-screw, I, passesthrough these slots, and enters the levers D D near their outer ends,
for the purpose of stationing the bar H in any desired position. E represents a skeleton frame within the main frame, in which is a bearing for the inner end of the screw F. This screw Rhas a bearing in one of the cross pieces B, also, and passes through a nut, e, which said nut is connected to the boxesa a by means of the rods G G.
When the screw F is turned by means of its crank-handle it moves the boxes a a, and they move the levers so that their outer ends rise or fall, according to which way it is turned. The bar H is used when the bottom of the vehicle is irregular, and is fitted under it before it is raised. The machine, when to be used, is placed under the vehicle, and the screw is then turned so that the levers catch against the under side of the body and elevate as much as required, and there they hold it.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim is- 1. The frame A B and the levers O D, connected as described, and the levers operated by means of Y the screw F, as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The bar H, connected to one of each pair of the levers, and used with the levers and frame, as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony-that 1 claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 21st day of August, 1876.
