Briefly stated," the structural novelty is predicated upon a suitably proportioned and shaped boX having a single door for closing upper and lower compartments; the upper compartment constitutinga receptacle" for mail, and the lower compartment serving as a holder or closet for one or more milk bottles.
The principal feature of the invention is the retaining device for the door which embodies a latch controlled by means operable from within the house. e
A special feature of recommendation in this retaining device is the specific construction of a peculiarly designed latch which has a portion for co-operationwith a keeperbracket on the door, and a leg portion which is so located as to literally kick the door open when it is unlatched.
In carrying the inventive conception into practice, I have employed an assembly of mechanical details which are mutually relatedin such a manner as to form a simple and economical combination receptacle and de-- pendable retaining means which is operableon'ly from the back of the box and preferably through the medium of an extension operating rod made accessible for easy manipulation inside the house. I
Other objects, features, and advantages of the invention will become more readily apparent from the following description and 0 to disclose the retaining latch on the interior;
Figure 3 is a horizontal section 'on the line 33 of Figure 2.-
Figure 4 is a vertical section onlthe line HofFigure 2. K
- Figures 5 and Gare and keeper sections.
.JEThe, device is preferably installed on an's interior wall 7-of the building shown in Fig .ure 4 and operated fronrthe interiorfwall 8 As showniii-Figure- 1,'the-,numeral 9- desig-' nates a-vertically' elongated somewhatr'ectangular box whose. upper endis formed with an inclined watershedding-roof '10. fAt-"the extreme top-is a letter slot 1-1 and ahingedly holding papers packages and represents the 1 hingedly arcuate keeper bracket 16 of'the 'confi'gurationrepresented. in Figured 1 Asbeforeimplied the numeral-17designatesa horizontal partition plate appropriately located onithe interior 'to divide the box into an upper, letter receptacle 18 anda lower partition 19 constituting ah'old'eror"closet-fo'r reception'ofa' I milk-bottle 20. l

The
Thus, the person on the insideof the house disengages the latch and moves the door slightly open so that upon walking on the outsidethe knob 15 can be grasped and the door moved to full open position as shown in Figure 2 to facilitate insertion or removal of the milk bottle. This also uncovers the front of the letter compartment as is obvious.
It is thought that persons skilled in the art to which the invention relates will be able to obtain a clear understanding of the invention after considering the description in connection with the drawings, Therefore, a more lengthy description is regarded as unnecessary.
Minor changes in shape, size, and rearrangement of details coming within the field of invention claimed may be resorted to in actual practice if desired.
I claim:
A latch device for a barrier having a keeper member thereon comprising a substantially U-shaped member having a pivot pin receiving opening in its bight with its lower leg longer than its upper leg and said upper leg having a depending keeper engaging projection on its free end, and an arm connected with the bight part and extending over the upper leg and spaced therefrom to form a space for receiving an operating member, whereby when the latch member is moved to releasing position the projection will leave the keeper member and an end of the long lower limb will engage the barrier to move the same to open position. i
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
' WILLIAM J. WHEELER.
